Allow the VR '2D screen' to be disabled?

Adding +1 to this suggestion.
I've just gone VR and I'm blown away by ED while in ship. However; vr space legs on the other hand....
ED in VR is indeed mind blowing.

It is a shame that FD do not regard it as important enough to put development effort into, when ED was and is (well, Horizons anyway) a showcase for a well-designed VR implementation.

Probably because the original devs (and VR contractor, allegedly) are long gone... and we have devs that only render their work in 2D for a future crapping out on console, to keep those shareholders happy (not the players).

I found a youtube video with David Braben showing off at a convention (back in 2014) about ED and implementing VR .. when you look at it with today's reality in mind, it's so frustrating and sad .. there was passion about new tech back then, now there's only silence left about the VR "experience" they bragged about at the time. Completely ommitting that they have an omportant playerbase playing only in VR.
I'm glad and thankfull that at least the community are still fighting to get what the game was supposed to have intrincically: VR support, and not a poor alternative: cinema-screen projection.

I agree, at the time it was one of the first games to have VR support and I didn't expect it to be relegated to the sidelines, particularly as I like others play exclusively in VR. I feel it helped promote the game too, and I'm hoping that wasn't the only reason they focused emphasis on the VR support early on.

You wouldn't happen to have a link to the YouTube video would you, I'd interested in seeing it?

yes, Here you go.
And I totally agree, it was used as a commercial argument. Very sad he (they) forgot this, especially as everything is allready in place to make it work. Some players even found a trick to play in VR on foot, in the free-cam module, and it works.. Here

Thanks, and wow that is from a while ago isn't it... David talks about VR getting better as they learn, and yet that has been my complaint all along, VR hasn't been developed at all past it's initial state. Where is the VR keyboard for the galaxy map? What about some touch support, even just in the cockpit?

And that's been ED's problem all along, we get a basic feature and generally it's not developed further (insert gameplay example here).

What irks me is that Odyssey was clearly never intended to have VR support once development began. I don't buy their "we tried and couldn't make it work" comments when the news broke about no VR support for on-foot, particularly as the floating screen isn't even rendered in 3D, which suggests their rendering pipeline hasn't been written with any sort of 3D, which is ironic considering David Braben talks about that mode too in that YT video.

I'm aware of the free-cam mode working, but of course we can't play the game like that. What I'm waiting (or rather, hoping for) is that FD state they will work on an improved VR implementation of the on-foot features, hence all these posts and people putting their voices on the forum in the hope they change their minds, but they haven't committed to it.

Especially as their immediate goals are making it better on moderate spec PCs and of course consoles, so they can get more revenue from there. Performance improvements help VR players too, but they do not seem focused on making any more features work in VR, which I can only assume is a commercial decision. I want them to reconsider, so I'm still posting around here.

I’m not sure I’d summarise events like that.

For me the best overview of their stance is this quote:

Luke Betterton (Designer) said:
Elite is obviously a very nice VR game. You sit in the cockpit, and you're in front of the stars. It lends itself perfectly to VR. I'm really glad that we did add VR support because it's pretty awesome, it is quite an experience. Being able to run around on foot, though, is very much a different experience. We're still looking at the way that we would tackle that if we need to. Or if we decide that we think we can get a good way of doing it. And sure, like, that's something that we'll tackle, but for the moment, we have to focus on the actual main experience and getting that working the way that we really want it to feel. So on day one, there won't be any VR support. But we're not saying never, it's just we need to focus our efforts elsewhere right now.

It seems clear that they’ve made an operational decision to focus on the classic game alone currently. (Primarily due to limited resources, lowered financial returns in the VR market, and/or technical difficulties re performance etc, it seems safe to assume. The specific reasons are somewhat academic at this point though. The decision has clearly been made.)

On the positive side it’s worth noting that the stereo render does actually work on foot though. Most notably in the vanity camera as you mention. (And as an intriguing bonus, seemingly in other modes too, going by the dropship glitch)

I’d also note that vanity camera VR functionality was a specific request of this thread, and is possibly in game now as a result. The best olive branch FDev are able to offer currently, essentially.

But regardless, we all want more ;). And although personally I’m not expecting anything imminently, if this thread hits the 'most upvoted on record' slot I’ll certainly be pursuing the CMs for more information on where FDev stand currently, and reiterating the VR community’s desire for a proper VR port :)

Can people please stop reviving old VR threads it gets me all excited that Joy Muldoon is back.

Thanks.

Can’t necro a living thread Leo. And this one’s still very much a going concern ;)

It’s also only 13 votes away from being the most upvoted Suggestion on record. So get involved man!

(By which I mean, go and trollishly upvote the current top Suggestion instead ;))

I‘ll do neither thanks.

Interesting experiment here incidentally:

I can’t test it at the moment, but looks like it might be worth trying the old beta function in Virtual Desktop (£11).

Can’t say my own experiment with SBS was a roaring success, but having it with full headlook, rather than on a screen via BigScreen, would be an improvement :)

When I click your support-banner, it just links back to this thread. As you speak of 'vote' I supposed it was on the issue-tracker, but I can't seem to find it there .. Please tell me how to 'upvote' .. I'm just a simple commander .. ;-)
cheers

As in just click the 'like' button on the first post in this thread :)

I am not sure if it can be "removed" as much as that VR 3D would need to be added in it's place.

Possibly. As the OP says, it’s an assumption ;)

But I would note these suggestions of existing native VR support on foot:
