Alpha Release date speculation thread

I will take a part of alpha test. And I do not think it will spoil the fun.

I wonder if commanders and the progress in the game will continue on from alfa and beta? Or will we start from screech on the game release.

:( I wish I could afford this. I gave all I could and I'm still only in the 1st Beta.

Never mind; us 1st beta guys will be able to enjoy the game in a more developed form. :)

(Fixed). :)

I'm pretty sure the progress will be reset from build to build; that'll definitely include the final release.

All players will start from scratch, I can't see that changing!

The only advantage having played alpha/beta versions will give is an insight into game mechanics and a much quicker starting off the blocks than a player that hasn't had the same experience.

Imagine it like starting a second char in a game, so you already know the UI mechnics and can play a lot quicker.

Or put another way, all of the alpha and beta testers will spend most of release day sitting around space stations laughing at everyone else crashing while attempting to dock:D

Anyone (higher pledgers) considering waiting until actual release or maybe 2nd beta before playing?

I'm very much torn. I've pledged high enough so I can participate in the alpha, but - it wasn't the reward I wanted. It just came "free". Thinking about what Styggron said about savouring the moment, and knowing how alpha some alpha can be (if that makes sense) I wonder if it will be better to wait a bit... experience the game in all it's (hopeful) glory nearer or at release.

Or am I just talking nonsense & of course everyone will be on it like a car bonnet as soon as the alpha lids are taken off? :p
Surely the point of testing, Alpha or otherwise, is to help the devs identify problems.

Apart from wanting to get my hands on the game asp, part of my motivation to pledge at this level was to be a contributor (however small) to the creation of the most awesome game in history. I don't care if its buggy, or even if its the entire game.

CANT WAIT ARGHHH!!!

I'll certainly try to take some part in the Alpha, I'm very much looking forward to it. I imagine that I'll probably try to be "sensible" for a little while (I can't fly ships to save my life so I foresee crashes aplenty in my future) then I'll likely try to "go nuts" for a while and do things that might be considered to be deliberately "silly".

I would imagine that FD would ask us to look at particular things, almost a "pre-assigned mission" (though since my experience of Elite was on the Acorn Electron, I've never done a mission!).

B**ger that, I'm playing it straight away. :p

That's kind of my attitude as well :)

I've been waiting a long time for a space trading game as good as Elite to come along. The more people who _do_ try out the alpha the better as it means more bugs will be found, the gameplay more explored, and therefore give a better experience for all new players when the game properly launches.

We're going to have players who weren't born the in same century as the original game!

Regards

Martin.

I'll be on that alpha as soon as I possibly can :D! I've never done such testing before, but am prepared for the worst.

In any case, just logging in and playing will probably be useful, since PCs are varied and fickle beasties, and each one of the alpha testers could easily have a completely different system set-up.

Bring it on!

First of all, if you must play and try out the Alpha test, you must have a pretty good computer to search the issues/bugs/glitches and other imperfections in the game.
It is simply not possible to blame the lag in the game when you have a bad connection to the internet.
There are often targets of what to accomplish with Alpha test, demands on players are quite high to leave feedback, You're in the first line of testers and want to try to catch anything you can that might be game-breaking or faulty and report it so it can be fixed and the game will be more enjoyable for everyone! ;)
I hope the ' Alpha Test ' wipe to open again on the first Beta test, since the second Beta test-Wipe-again for release to the Public.
Wiped?! What does wiped mean?
Wiped means generally that everything is erased from the game and started fresh.
But that's not fair! I worked so hard and get NOTHING?!
Note that these phases are only TESTS. Yes you get to play the game early and experience things, yes it's great and dandy, but really what you are doing is testing the game.
It is not the ' live ' or ' full-release ' of the game yet. You do get the knowledge ahead of time of gameplay elements, and knowing you helped test and refine the game for a better gameplay in the future however. And I suppose bragging rights.:p
Regards and Approved

I am not sure if I got into the Alpha Testing I Pledge £115 Participate in the first round private beta test, plus all rewards above. I am guessing that alpha? Just to be sure I am asking.

As for my laptop. If it too slow. I will upgrade the graphics cards on it.

Alpha was £200.

I wouldn't go upgrading at Alpha, or even Beta point. I've played games in those stages before and they ran MUCH better when they went live. Presumably last minute optimisations and the removal of any debug code, etc.

Sorry, but you are dead wrong. I've been chosen for betas specifically BECAUSE of my awful computer. It helps developers see a range of systems and what the game will run on. It also helps them determine system requirements, which may be lower then they initially believed.

I do agree with the rest of your post, but I wanted to point out my experiences with alpha/beta testing.

So many people treat Beta as release these days, I feel for the developers - they get hardly any useful bug reports and lots of QQ on the forums.
I don't feel too badly for the developers. Once upon a time they use to pay people to bug test, now the people pay them to bug test. What a result!
