An investigation into Frontier's actions on Combat Logging

Combat logging does not need to be punished. The op was not an argument for it to be punished.

The solution to combat logging WITHIN the existing game infrastructure is as follows:

If your client exits the game while in a combat state, your ship is destroyed and you are welcomed back with a rebuy screen. This solution works within the P2P infrastructure, works for solo mode, and removes the perverse incentive to combat log by treating it as a player death.

You're welcome.

Ouch, hope my connection holds out

There's another whiff - if you want, you can try again. Eventually you'll get the point of the thread!

The White Knights are delusional man. FD can do no wrong in their eyes. They will defend them blindly until the bitter end, when they help FD fly the game straight into the ground.

This would make every time your game crash, your internet goes down, you suffer a power outage, etc, while playing result in a rebuy screen. Not quite workable, particularly for those that have flaky internet to start with (such as nearly everyone with rural internet).

Or those that have a stable but slow connection and family members that like watching Youtube/Netflix/etc.

I pulled that off on a Cutter with phasing sequence during Walter Waldo CG, escaped basically unscatched (3 or 4% of hull aren't worth mentioning). And I was flying a trade Cutter with C6 shield and E-class boosters, LOL.
As soon as I've logged back, I was interdicted by a sole FDL with incendiary MCs (IIRC), who proceed to shoot me. I low-waked. He interdicted me again, I low-waked... *insert Yakety Sax here* Finally, after 10 or so interdicts, I arrived at the station and was greeted by the FDL, who then proceeded with SDC's trademark "cheater-logger-loser" routine.
Haven't had so much laughs in MONTHS!

content!!

I fear this pretty much rules out any Crime & Punishment changes - and the reduction in frequency of Combat Logging that would result - for update 2.3. A feature that has been necessary since 1.0. Therefore Piracy will remain a dead playstyle, as will Bounty Hunting Wanted CMDRs, and the newbie sector around Eravate will remain a Combat-Logging-griefers' paradise. This is disappointing... hopefully in 2.4 around June...

Cheers for the honest info anyway Brett, it's always appreciated :)

What did I say about OP not having the result you wanted?

In about a month maybe two Frontiers reaction to combat logging will be back to the way it was. Unpunished baring a few cases here and there. We still wont have a proper C&P system, Frontier will be quieter than ever, and the community will be a lot more bitter. Angry with each other, angry with Frontier.

Are you now beginning to see my point about why this post was so unhelpful?

I am of the belief that the odds of your (or anyone's) connection -- which is probably fine 99.99% of the time -- going down in random window of time you are engaged in PvP (and losing the fight) because your ISP is failing you would amount to a rounding error, mathematically.

First time warning, second time in a short span of time: temporary ban.

Regardless, if you choose to play a game with a mandatory online component, be prepared for the consequences of losing your connection. This is your responsibility, not anyone else's.

Just from a very practical perspective: is there anything FD can do in the first place? Alt F4 will always work wouldn't it? It's not like they can stop people from pressing a certain combination of keys.
How do other multiplayer games handle this?

Other video games that I've played where this has been an issue usually adopt the approach that the person who's connection craps out, for whatever reason, takes a loss and just has to suck it up. In the context of ED, I think the suggestion of your ship remaining in space for a fixed duration, say 90 seconds, would cure the problem immediately and people who combat log would be forced to formulate other, valid tactics to avoid destruction.

Yes, this will lead to rare occasions where peoples internet connections just happen to drop at an inopportune moment during a fight, but I think those rare occurences would be a small price to pay for the greater good of the game.

Given the state of the world and people being what they are these days, this rare and unavoidable "sacrifice" through no fault of the player will no doubt be seen as unacceptable (won't somebody think of the spaceships!) and there will be much protest and wailing and gnashing of teeth were it ever implemented.

The way I see it is that the needs of the many (and the game itself) outweighs the needs of the few (with dodgy connections), or the one. Unfortunately this philosophy doesn't seem to sit well with people in this day and age.

Thats how it is in every online game ever, poor connection is never a saving grace, its more like driving under influence.

When people re-log, ships should stay in the game for at least a minute

No I repped you.

It's awesome to think about. Any idea if there's a name for this problem?

ie two generals problem (which it isn't?)

Oh, I'm sorry about the tone of my reply then. I took your smiley the wrong way.

I'm not aware of a specific name for it, aside from "the trouble with P2P networking" :)

All the angry people in one thread..... it is like a little angry nest of bees.
I have no idea what you all do to get so worked up but whether it is hanging outside famous places in open and singing 'nah nah' at passing ferdelances, taking unshielded type 6 full of rares and no rebuy or sandpaper your own goolies... or from the other perspective, pulling wings off bees and cutting up learner drivers to make them panic then yelling that they shouldn't be allowed on the roads....

All I have to say is CALM DOWN a bit before you give yourselves heart attacks.

Dearie me.

I fear the situation is a little grimmer than that, it's FD's attitude at question here.

Sometimes, a company needs to step up and not let their customers push them around so much.
I work in customer service, and often have to bend over backwards for customers, but if some customer came in and did something like what SDC did. We would kick them off the property.
Some customers are not worth it.

Sounds a lot like "shooting the messenger" though, and you can be pretty darn sure would be interpreted as such.
What you describe may be needed at times, but i'm very doubtful this would be such a time.
