Another reason Legs might not be as great as you think

I still don't get why people are so interested in 'Space legs' especially when the conditions suggested turn the current game into something completely different. Elite is a 'spaceship game'. If you can't walk around your ship but can get out of it and walk around everything else what is the point? 'Call of duty' is surely the better game if you want to run around shooting people; which is the ultimate end-game for getting out of a spaceship.

Adding the SRV and planets made the game better and somehow didn't turn ED into Forza Motorsport.

Because, stepping outside and walking around my spaceship to admire it some setting is one of the things X4 got right. Walking in, on and around it is interesting in its own right and I enjoyed it. Also enjoyed going EVA to repair it or complete certain missions. Doesn’t have to be an FPS to get some enjoyment out seeing something other than just the cockpit HUD.

ETA: One of the best visuals came when I was standing on the dock and gave orders for my fighters to attack an incoming frigate. Watching them all deploy, the hangers operating and then the distant battle seen from the open sky of the launch platform was good stuff. Miss that aspect a bit.

You can do that anyway. Having an avatar on the screen isn't really going to change anything?

(not a dig)

Oh wow, you can EVA out and repair ships already. That was a stealthy patch.

Or did you just fall into this concept art by mistake?

Okay; Do you actually believe that is going to happen? I know I don't (not anytime soon at least). That is not happening in Elite

If there was a Bafta for most disappointing developer in history award... FDEV would probably be nominated :(

Elite has never been just a space ship game. It's about you as a commander surviving in a future environment. Currently our commanders are stuck to the seats.

That may change in the future. It certainly won't make Elite a different game if it does.

I think they're going to add Legs. For various fairly empirical reasons:

FDev have cash. They have intent for this DLC, writ large on the stock exchange. They have a long history of saying that Legs have always been the plan, and that they continue to be so.

I could dig up a load more sourcing, but you get the picture right? On balance there's a reasonable synthesis of evidence that suggests that FDev both intend, and have the resourcing, to have a stab at it.

(Whether or not they'll get hull breaches in I'm still very sceptical about however ;))

Well it should be. Star Trek had all sorts of underlying themes. Primarily of which was Socialism.
Why not anytime soon? Why cant this be the New Era? Its the newest eraest thing i can think of. What will change to make legs more viable in 5 years VS 12/2020??

That is easy: FDEV aren't very good at delivering anything when it comes to 'Elite'. And that is an understatement.

If a player can take Skyrim from this:

with a "simple" mod, then hopefully Frontier's professional staff can "mod" ED to have improved interiors. My only worry is what effect this might have on performance. I have plenty of headroom in 2D, but in VR I'm right up against the limits of my GPU.
Beer goggles have a similar effect. Only one can away.

I admire your optimism :D

This is actually my main concern. Changing the low res interiors to high res in the cockpit alone is one thing. But being confined in just the cockpit/bridge will be a letdown for everyone who has been waiting to walk around their ship. If FDev really wants to make Legs cool, they will have to add more interior to all the ships. A personal chambers, the cargo bay, the hanger, passenger cabins, engine room, etc. All that added stuff will cause more instancing issues. Instead of just loading in the cockpit, hardpoints, modules and exteriors of each ship that comes into instance, all these interiors will have to be loaded into every instance as well. They could do something like a "loading screen" while you were docked or landed on a planetary body, then you would be warped into a different instance where the whole interior existed (as it would otherwise not exist in "normal" instancing), but I really don't know if that would work in the current peer-to-peer model.

Sure, a top o' the line pc might be able to handle this, but your basic gaming rig or console? We can barely handle multiple players in one instance as it is....

EDIT: Btw, props for Lydia. Better looking Lydia is better looking. I just don't like the mods that change her personality and take away her snark.

I very much doubt we will be confined to the cockpit or bridge, that would make the paid expansion pointless and I very much doubt it will sell.
