News Another sneak peek at Horizons progress (Base Raid)

Ahh I'm glad I'm not the first one to whinge :) Was the framerate poor because of the Youtube 30FPS (?) limit or the PC's graphics card or ? If it's not down to Youtube, I don't think I could play with that framerate.

Not the frame rate - just the quality of the video upload. Is there a reason its in 720? Maybe im spoily with HQ videos, but it doesn't look like 720p?

Footage still looks awesome mind you :)

Edit: Weird, I can now see the 1080 option - wasnt there before!

Horizons is starting to show its Frontier heritage from other games like Infestation and V2000.

David, is this an intentional thing that you always wanted to revisit these games' gameplay, or just in the company DNA?

Playing a first person multiplayer combined arms Zarch on a planet set in the Elite galaxy might just push too many good childhood memory buttons for me to deal with gracefully.

EDIT: well, there is hope, from 2006:
It sounds like we should dig this out again - it would be a shame to let V2000 die. My guess is it was something to do with the CD loading or the software protection which stops it working...

We're very busy at the moment, but I'll try and take a look at it.

Question is, how fun will it really be? To me it look like a bit too much pew-pew and less like the more slow paced gameplay that I've always liked.

if you do not like action, maybe there will be steath missions too?
(totally making this up, but it would be cool if we have missions to steal items from said bases, going in cold, at night into the middle of the base trying to not set off alarms etc to get a barrel of some secret development chemical or piece of prototype tech).

Virus (and therefore V2000) was an outstanding game... if this is the case then colour me happy.

There are likely to be approximately 1 trillion planets to land on in Horizons, some of which are several times the size of Earth. If you want, you probably will be able to find planets which you can roam around for 100 years and never see another living soul. It doesn't get much slower than that!

It normally takes a longer for the full 1080 versions of videos to upload on YouTube.

Thanks,

Looks excellent - just one thing, what's with the poor video quality?! :(

As for the framerate, it seemed like normal YouTube 30fps, unless I'm missing something. I'm using a desktop browser, if that's at all relevant.

I'm curious how this is going to work in Solo. If there's no NPC Wing functionality, I guess gameplay like this is out?

Also - and maybe this is partly due to the video quality - but depth perception does seem to be a consistent 'problem'. It's hard to tell how far away surface features are, or how big that Corvette is. Maybe that's perfectly realistic - in atmosphere-less worlds there's no fog/haze and there are no object of known size for reference (a person, a building of known size, a tree etc.) then it becomes impossible to judge size and/or distance.

That looked excellent. I also wonder how base raids will play out in Solo mode. Will there still be aerial action with NPCs while being on the ground or is that a Multiplayer online only thing?

That's always a problem on airless worlds and pretty realistic. Just look at the photos from the moon landings. There are mountains in the background that are many kilometers away and also very high that look like small hills a couple of minutes on foot away. That's something you just have to get used to.

This was briefly mentioned in the last stream. In Solo you would have to split your time between driving the SRV and flying your ship in. Not exactly the most convenient way to do things but there you go.

Thanks for that reference. No idea what V2000 was but glad I looked. Looks really cool.
