News Another sneak peek at Horizons progress (Base Raid)

I am much, much more interested to know if there is ANY content for explorers, or whether it is all pewpew. All the PR hype is on pew, pew and pew.

It's very much a concern for many I should think. Thing is, my game logic would be this: The bases / outposts / settlements etc must be there for a reason not "just because it looks cool". The reasons must make sense. The reasons should be exploitable by players too. On airless bodies, it's likely to be either a tactical decision or for collectable resources of some kind. Throw in stuff that may also be lying around, ala Star Trek ish, ruins, ancient packets of crisps (still in date) or whatever, and we have the makings of decent content. But it has to be rare enough to still feel "Wow! Look at this!" and not "another ruin? yay."

It looks great!

Will the rocks get better textures though? They look one color and really stand out, I understand it's WIP...

I dont think you'll see that, if you look at how they implemented Npc's in space there was no reasoning, they are just there to populate the space around you.

I just hope that you have to do some work to find these things on the planets and that some things are rarer than others, perhaps some things will only be found in the outer reaches..

I believe from Wednesday's stream, they mentioned there are still some graphical tweaks and upgrades that will be coming. However, I wouldn't expect it to look 100% on release and will likely be improved over time.

Here is this week’s quick-and-dirty unedited video capture from the Planetary Landings update for Horizons (using the same dev machines as before) as we begin a raid on a surface base, using two SRVs and a ship. Still quite a few elements need work which I won’t list here, but you can see there's been good progress since last week:

I'm sorry you are just not fair showing off these clips ;) We want to play and we want to play RIGHT NOW lol

Everything looks fantastic and i'm waiting excited for the release date BUT

i have to say it, i hope, REALLY HOPE, that this will be the perfect opportunity for making missions more complex & interesting than just kill/trade.

Can you shootout the SRV tyres or puncture them on rough/jagged terrain?, what are they filled with Air/Nitrogen?

Everything looking nice, I do hope there are other objectives than just pew pew though. Explorers don't go out armed to the teeth, they often fly solo too.

Be nice if you could use stealth so get inside also for the armed bases.

Oh.. now i've just created more questions for myself! lol

Unfortunately I think you'll be correct. Well, I did say my game logic and not Frontiers which often seems similar to a box of frogs on acid.

People seem to ask about exploration so I'll just post these here:

--------------------
Will the SRV also have a discovery scanner
No - it has something new. We'll reveal more on this in a few weeks time.

Michael
--------------------
Please dont make it like the dumb Discovery scanner, make it complex. Exploration in this game is really boring!
It requires more than the honk.

Michael
--------------------

Michael have also said that one of the things he is most excited about is the new way we will be able to find stuff. Can't find where I read that though...

A planetary map was also mentioned by Edward on a community stream. :)

This is utterly amazing. Blows away any expectations I had for initial planetside play.

Err... there's a lot to test here. I'm thinking you'll want to do a 6-8 week beta cycle. If that's the case, and you are planning a release before Dec 25th, then the beta could start....

Ummm... I need to speak to my supervisor regarding a sudden family emergency requiring me to work from home...or something. ;)

Edit: Oops. Sorry about the language. Thanks for removing.

Am I the only one who thinks that DB posting these is actually the marketing department using his forum account? Either way. Good stuff.

Teaser each Friday which is then followed up with a more in-depth look at what was shown the next Wednesday in a livestream. Three times in a row now.

It might still be him doing the posting, but the marketing team is obviously involved. ;)

Next Friday we will get yet another tease about something and the following week yet another livestream about that thing. All the way up to Beta release. It's not like they are going to slow down the PR push now...rather the opposite.

Good times! :)

Pitch, roll and general angle of attack are meaningless in a non atmospheric scenario except for bringing thrusters into alignment and lateral thrusters in Elite have as much power as vertical thrusters so other than managing the thruster control there is no reason whatsoever for it to lose any altitude, it's not like an aircraft that has to maintain airflow over it's lift surfaces, he could have come in inverted or on knife edge and still not lost any altitude.

Yes, obviously the side thrusters are not like air foils. But not every large ship has powerful side thrusters. Most ships are better at vertical thrust, especially larger ships. Anyway, on further reflection, I thought about how much g-force we feel right above the landing pads in rotating stations, the side thrusters seem to have no problem maintaining altitude. Ergo, the video above must be in a lower G field? So when the devs talk about how differently each planet feels, there must REALLY be quite the difference for all ships higher gravity environments. And the popular use of FA off is to increase turning speed is going to prove quite interesting, particularly in ships that have are harder time changing their momentum...

So maybe smaller ships will really have a purpose, especially on bigger planets? In any case, they should be able to avoid turret fire a little better than Corvettes. ;)
