Any particular reason I should wait to buy an Oculus?

I've waited a long time for the Oculus. I didn't go down the DK route, instead waiting for the bugs to be ironed out before spending my hard earned cash on the consumer unit. I've followed the Vive/Oculus discussions with interest, and I got a chance to try them both at Lavecon. I've finally settled on the Oculus (although I totally get the benefits of "roomscale", the area I have to play just won't really allow it so I'm basically going to be seated, playing ED), I've got the cash and I'm psyching myself up to walking into John Lewis tomorrow or Thursday and buying one over the counter.

My question is, is there any good reason I've missed that means I should wait. Have there been any announcements or reputable rumours of significant price drops just around the corner? Is there any talk of a CV1.1 (i.e. an updated unit with significant hardware improvements)? I dare say I'll be interested in the Touch when it comes out. Any news on that front that suggests I should hold off?

All thoughts/suggestions welcome.

None that I know of myself.

Why would you be interested in the touch, but not the Vive? The touch may not lend itself to room-scale, but the Vive does standing still experiences exceedingly well, and with ReVive there are no titles that you can't use from Oculus.

Aside from the roomscale thing (for which I don't have the space) I prefer the Oculus in almost every other respect. I'm still interested in Oculus Touch tho' because I can see that being able to interact with the virtual environment (even if I can't walk around in it) in ways other than via a joystick or gamepad might be ikinda cool.

About the only possibility I could think of is the Touch launch date/price should be announced officially in the next few weeks - and I guess it's possible that they might bundle them together at a reduced price. That's pure speculation, though.

True enough - but all Rift pre-order owners have first dibs on Touch (not sure how it will work though, or how many Rift owners will buy Touch as well). Retail Rifts might not have Touch for a while or a few weeks while pre-order Touchs are sent out (or it'll be a simple add-on pack in-store).

I don't think you'll save very much in a bundle (who knows); you have to weigh a potential saving against the time between now and making that presumed saving. If roomscale isn't a big drawcard (I only havew a smallish space too) and if you're willing to lay down the green, jump in now Alec and come look around your bridge/cockpit properly in VR.

From an industrial design perspective, the Rift wins hands down, and its the better option for Elite at this time.

I don't know if you can purchase games without owning a headset but today is the last day of the sales. I picked up a copy of Project CARS, and I'm really pleased with it.

Thanks for reminding me. I wanted to get that too and thought I had until the end of the month. [noob]

I don't know when I'll find the time to play it though - you know, ED and all.

The points that will influence the price is almost certainly going to be:
1. Supply and Demand. From the press, I get the impression that both the Vive and CV1 haven't sold as well as expected. Assuming that to be the case, both groups are going to eventually take a look at the stocks, production planned and expected sales and make a decision on pricing.
2. Competition. Clearly OVRS is out, though that doesn't sound like a serious competitor. More important is PSVR, which could have be a major factor. One question being whether or not it's PC compatible, which I don't believe we yet know.

What makes you think the Rift won't do roomscale?

Of course the Rift will do room-scale - Alec said he doesn't really have the space for it.

I only have a small play-space too, but I will still get Touch for the interaction,

Just not I N T E R A C T I O N ...

He said "Aside from the roomscale thing I prefer the Oculus " leading me to believe he did not think the Rift would do it. (for which I don't have the space) being another issue. Just the way I read I guess.

All options being weighed up, and knowing what you want, no... there's no reason to wait. Get in VR right now!

No you're quite right, I had the Vive down as being far more roomscale capable than the Rift. I know you can stand up and stuff with the Rift on but ... it's not quite as good as the Vive at actually being able to track you walking around a room is it?

ETP (estimated time until purchase) now 36hrs!:D

With the Rift (1 constellation camera) I can walk as far as the cable allows me to, which is most of the room my PC is in (which I just noticed is much smaller than a Clipper's cockpit).
Headtracking works everywhere and while looking in any direction.
In the far third of that area (seen from the camera) I notice a slight positional wobble in the positioning while standing still. Not really bad in a game breaking or sickness inducing way but noticable and possibly annoying in the long run (but it's not severe enough to notice it while moving).

If the second constellation camera that allegedly comes with Touch fixes that wobble I'm happy with the Rift's room scale capability - doesn't seem impossible to me.

I tried both, got the Rift - really happy. ED is just awesome 'in' the Rift - I'm suddenly really back into gaming for the first time in 10 years! just so enjoyable... i'm grinning like an eeejit. Missus thinks I've lost it.

:)

PS. the only snag is the resolution of the side panels, but you can always just lean over a bit! Go for it....!! (I'm just searching this forum now for any tips on this little topic)

Urgh. Was never happy about facebook's involvement. Oh well. Like a lot of modern privileges, I guess the Oculus comes with a side order of guilt.
