Be Warned

Was in my Anaconda and had finally scrapped together enough mats and components to get a Guardian FSD booster. All of my previous fines and bounties had been paid off at an Interstellar Factors Contact and I was heading to the Guardian Broker when I was interdicted. Submitted and killed the NPC, but in the process of collecting the components that were dropped I hit the fire button in error and hit a nearby security ship. I received a 100 Cr bounty, which was fair enough. Jumped to the Guardian Broker system and docked. Bought the FSD Booster, but wasn't sure how to apply it.

Went into outfitting and before I tried anything (and screwed things up) I wanted to store my Class 6 fully-engineered FSD. When I highlighted the FSD it said, "Legal Issues." No biggie, just a hundred credit fine so I stored the FSD.

Eventually, I spotted the FSD Booster category in the store and bought the 10+ LY Guardian FSD booster. Then I went back to get my stored FSD. It would not let me install the FSD saying "Module cannot be fitted for legal reasons." I found the option to "Clean Module" so I selected that and saw it would cost me 809,000 credits.

Jaw on the floor, I paid it and reinstalled the FSD to see that it once again it has the label "Legal Issues." Again, the only thing against me at that time was an unpaid 100 Cr fine.

Simple math tells me I paid an 8090% premium on the original fine to reinstall just one component on my ship.

When the initial suggestion of putting a fine on ships was made, I said it was a dumb idea. This is now simply absurd.

Git rich, work harder? Or is the game corrupt?

Ah yes.

Modules become hot at the same time as your ship because somehow the cops just "know" this stuff and yet, when you pay a fine/bounty, the cops' omniscience fails them and the modules that were hot as a result of the fine/bounty remain hot even after you've paid the fine/bounty.

Something something C&P FAQ something. :p

It's to discourage just buying a new, clean ship and switching the modules from the old ship over to it, rather than pay the bounty.

Best answer, nothing more to add.
It was mentioned in the C&P patchnotes if i rememver correctly and was asked for from many players for exactly this reason.

If the numbers are correct i can't tell, thought the payment was based on module value and not bounty value to make it indeed possible at a certain point to better buy a new ship rather than paying the bill. Maybe you should go safe route and make a suuport ticket?

I make it a point to always pay off my fines as soon as I get one. As I hang out in an Anarchy system quite often, it's not a big deal for me. But I'd suggest it to anyone: the moment you get a fine, find an interstellar contractor (or whatever they're called) and pay it. Haven't had one single issue since the new C&P system. (Which is not to say there's nothing wrong with the C&P mind you, I'm just offering a practical solution.)

Fines can be paid anywhere the faction is present. You only need an Interstellar Factors agent for bounties. Small but important distinction.

Gents,

This was not installing a FSD on a new ship. It was fitting it back onto the SAME ship it came from.

And a game mechanic that costs me 8000% more than the fine itself is simply moronic.

C&P - Punishing honest players, while the jackasses with 6 billion in the bank just don't give a damn.

So what you're saying is with the other 100 odd threads on this you couldn't learn from others mistakes, got ya no probs.

Or maybe he was doing what most people do and play the game first. Most people only tend to research or flat out search out a topic on the forum when they have already encountered an issue they wish to know more about!

Yet another superb example of superior human being, am I right?

Cheers Backelaer.

You wouldn't think the equivalent of a parking ticket would result in you losing your home.

Parking ticket is a fine, not a bounty. To be honest, the bounties for inadvertent shooting are ridiculously low. They should be a lot higher, say in the 1000s to make it clear they are not fines. It would avoid a lot of misunderstandings.

Been saying for ages now that *all* bounties need to be about 1 order of magnitude higher than is currently the case. So hundreds should become thousands & thousands should become tens of thousands. System security level should have a multiplicative effect on bounties & fines too (half in low sec, double in Hi sec), as should repeat offenses.

The more I think about it why would a station let you store a "legal problem" module in the first place? I know this is a game but if I where director (or whatever) of a space station I wouldn't want shady modules on my station because of blow-back. The over the top cost to refit a module with legal issues seems a little wonky as well. For clarity: I haven't had this problem but it seems to be a pretty common subject and proof that C&P need a lot more work.

@OP: Short answer - when you have accidental fines/bountiesit is best to clear them ASAP before you do anything else.

I'm totally with you there.
But aside form smuggling, I'm no expert on the criminal path in this particular galaxy. So I just try to immediately pay off any fines or bounties I get. Avoiding the entire C&P system as it currently stands worked pretty well for me so far.

And that just shows I'm not cut out to be a criminal, because Jmanis is entirely correct here ^ :D
