Patch Notes Update Beta 3.04 Change log

Played for two hours yesterday.

For the first time had no problem with the major bugs which were denying me all the fun. Examples: Crashes while entering hyperspace, launching, hangar movement while trying to land, considered a trespasser when login in while inside a station, etc...

The game just got a lot better, even mined with no issues :)

Just a bug... got disconnected from the server one time in two hours.

Bravo Frontier, bravo!

<facepalm> they ARE network issues causing that

Sorry but source? FPS stutter near supercruise at planets/station, transition in hyperspace and chilling around in stations are NOT related with network at all, network is completely separate topic and are irrelevant to this FPS stutter, as considering that FPS are heavily dependent on capability of hardware and optimizations at usage of resources/hardware.

Look, I'm I.T technician. I can easily tell the difference, I consider that FPS stutter as issue of optimization or hardware (hardware is unlikely considering that I own dual GPU's, 780's plus very good CPU (i7-4600K) and high load of RAM. This game is somewhat optimized (mainly due to smooth FPS in space locations), but they need to work more on optimizing the supercruising to planets/stations and reduce clutter in station that is causing fps stutter.

TL:DR

Network optimizations =/= fixing FPS stutter via supercruising to the stations (often no more than 20 Mm's away) and transition of FTL plus staying in station.

And also, glad to hear that community manager said that there is another fix coming for planet issue (related with fps stutter, I believe.)

Essentially, this update should improve the multiplayer performance of the game. Please let us know if it improves your experience, and let us know if it brings in any new issues.
Big improvement for me. So far haven't had any disconnects, and connection times and dropping-out-of-supercruise times seem much improved. Thanks!

It's not yet perfect though. Still see rubberbanding of players for instance, mostly in supercruise.

Edit: of course by saying that I jinxed it. The very next supercruise jump kicked me out with a "cannot connect to server" (or some such message). However that was the only time today, so overall still a big improvement, although obviously not perfect yet.

FPS drops/stuttering in OPEN PLAY "chilling" around player busy stations IS (or was, assuming 3.04 helps) due to network performance issues:

There are different causes for stuttering frame rate, some are more prevalent on some machines more than others. Multiplayer networking is the cause of some - most notably that which occurs in open opposed to solo play. Planets are currently another major source - particularly in supercruise. There are some other issues as well currently being investigated, but they are the two biggies right now.

Michael

Stuttering in SC while approaching planets is not, and a fix will come later with the next large build.

They are two separate issues.

Stutter can be a million things. Please state your specs and start by reducing gfx settings down from ultra high...if still and issue then please post again

It's so very obvious that the issue is on FD's side and not on the players end. Stuttering was introduced by update 3.02 or 3.03 (not sure) when they added the new planet surfaces.

Hey guys keep in mind that Frontier have multiple developers working on different aspects of the game.

Obviously the stuttering issues are a big problem and they are being looked into in parallel to other problems being fixed. The 3.04 update was a patch to remedy networking issues - which I am grateful for. No need to hold back on certain other fixes just because the one affecting you hasn't been sorted yet.

There's also a lot of doom-mongers and naysayers in here that seem to think their own problems reflect the world at large. That is simply not the case or these forums would be FLOODED with 10s of 1000s of posts all calling out the same issues.

Not to say people with problems are not to be heard, but it's simply not the case that everyone is experiencing all the same problems.

Let's hope Frontier continue to do such a fantastic job of releasing both content updates AND fixes for the game as it heads towards release.

All the armchair developers who are content to point out Frontier's mistakes in game design and implementation really should go out and have a cold drink. You really don't have any idea how complex Elite Dangerous is.

Just sitting back to observe what is actually in this game, what you can currently do, and what is planned, I feel only scratches the surface of the complexity involved in bringing this game to the masses...

Finally I would also like to add that it always seems to be the X.06 update that settles down. 1.06 and 2.06 were the case in points for the last two betas, so I'd expect at least another couple of updates for Beta 3 ;-)

Here Here !!!

I think that my ping time matters more than download speed, This is the first game I have tried online and I have killed 4 other players including two long dogfights so it is playable.

I do not really know what ping time is or what mine is, Its what my brother in Law says he gets 43 download and has played quake on line for years. he says I should be OK

You know this because you have some secret stats somewhere? It's a dev build, regressions happen, ticket them and be done with.

Secret stats? What? Do you mean statistics on players affected now versus in B2? Hmm nope. How about you - do you have secret stats?

State of the game is pretty obvious if 1. you played the two versions, or 2. read the reports from players in these forums. If you didn't play B2 and want to learn what is meant by the reply then spend a few hours going through the forums to compare facts.

So many little things broke in B3 that simply worked in B2. And B3 introduced a couple of major bugs like the stutter which has a big impact on gameplay. It's currently quite a mess compared to how polished the game play was in B2.06. Perhaps patch 3.05 or 3.06 will help get things closer to how B2 ended up.

This update should help with networking performance. Other fixes are in progress for other elements such as planets, although these will be in the next big release rather than an update.

Michael

Speaking of planets, is it at all possible to tweak the description for certain 'habitable' planets? All planets where liquid water can exist on the surface are listed as having human-breathable atmospheres, and that's just not true, unless you consider a planet with no oxygen breathable. There are also planets described as such with atmospheric compositions that are caustic, or even downright toxic to humans. I've come to terms with the idea that, although they are 'Earth-like' (another description used in-game) they are not necessarily habitable by humans, but if this is so, the language should be modified to reflect this, imho. This is not to mention the various 'extremophile' planets with improbable atmospheric and other characteristics (I started a thread about it here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=48422 ).

Also, I feel like I have actually seen terraformed planets with atmospheres and pressures and such that are hostile to human life, although I don't have any screenshots, unfortunately. Are these planets in the process of being terraformed, and thus aren't ready for human habitation yet? If so, It seems like a good idea to include that in the description, if at all possible and feasible.

Anyways, I know it's a bit of a niggle, but for a game that is so proud of being so scientifically accurate, it is bothersome, particularly for folks like me who want to find those 'Terra Novas' out there in the black, and know enough about science to recognize when something sounds... well, hinky ;)

Great with more focus on network and multiplayer. Think it is imperative that this gets a lot of focus going forward launch. Especially making the Multiplayer Experience in to what it needs to be for people to have fun

Well I found tonight's session to be much more stable than yesterday so it was a step in the right direction for me.

I still had to quit out to menu and back one time when my ship didn't want to launch (then appears in space), but much less than previously.

Don't know is anything changed server-side today but i'm playing for 3 hours straight now and no issues whatsoever! I'm enjoying the game big time! :)

Good to hear.

Just don't save and quit after accepting a hauling mission as they will disappear and you'll get stuck with haulage cargo that prevents you from completing the missions, using the space available, changing ships or jettisoning the cargo. Oh and most likely the cargo will be tagged as stolen if the bug resets and you'll end up with a massive fine from the missions and if you're lucky enough to get scanned, which will most likely happen as you leave a station, you'll get double fined for holding stolen cargo. Oh how do I love this bug...

This has happened to me a few times in Beta 3.02 and 3.03. I simply waited it out, it usually takes no longer than a minute at worst to wake up and initiate the launch sequence. Ticket it!

Played about 4 hours today mostly near the limits of the play area. No problems with stutter disconnecting or any thing else but then I have not seen another player all day, the traffic in those systems is down to single figures in the last 24 hours. Out there is the first time I have found empty Bulletin Boards, which I presumed was part of the game. Then about 1400hrs GMT on my way back into the middle of the play area, I entered a system with a lot of planets and the game hung and stuttered more than ever before.

Strange, i cant get into Open Gameplay at all and even Single Players stutters and dced after some time, not even 5 minutes into the game, are there more Servers or only one? Would like to try a different one if thats the case.
