Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

Stealing ships has become my favourite activity! Whenever I see a ship land somewhere, I immediately drop what I am doing and head there. Sometimes multiple ships land in sequence (I mean not at starports) and I try to note where each one is.

Why?

Because šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø
Usually when I steal a ship it becomes mine as soon as I sit in the pilot seat and take off.

However I had one case where the ship took off while I was on board fighting with the crew. I entered the cockpit and killed the pilot, and then sat in the pilot seat. I was already in space. I had full control of the ship, but it wasn't actually mine, as I discovered when I landed and tried to sell it. It wasn't in my list of ships, even though I had just arrived in it and it was sitting right there.

I had to re-board it and sit in the pilot seat again, and suddenly I was the owner. I guess a bug?

I was quite surprised when the ship took off just after I had boarded it, though. Never had that happen before. I could have stowed away and maybe they would have taken me to their base or something. :p

Because it feels quite silly, I would even say almost inappropriate, when my game character is supposed to be a serious space explorer, that uses technology to solve problems, becomes a magician as the game progresses. And the fact that he is the only character that does magic, makes it more unsuitable to the game.

The only power I used in my playthrough was the one that gives you full oxygen so I could run further, I collected a few others but never even tried them. I don't want to be a magician either

I can live with it.

I'll just do what I did in Skyrim and pretend it's not a thing. No harm done.

Same here. Bethesda already spoiled that particular plot point in their previews. Iā€™m just glad I can pretty much ignore the main plot to my heartā€™s content. The main flaw IMO of Fallout 4, minor though it may be, was at certain points I was railroaded down that storyline if I wanted to continue the faction ones.

It didnā€™t help that Iā€™d done that exact same general storyline, with that exact same ā€˜plot twistā€™, in a D&D campaign back in the 90ā€™s. My last character in the campaign had been killed, so when my new character was ready, the DM placed her, turned to stone, in a Medusaā€™s lair, with a convenient ā€˜Stone to Fleshā€™ scroll. Iā€™m one of those players who writes a short story as a characterā€™s background, and the DM at the time was great at weaving the seeds Iā€™d plant into her campaigns.

I don't mind being a magician, I guess.

I use the personal atmosphere one a lot because it lets me sprint farther, and with all the walking in this game it is helpful. The other powers are mostly just amusing. There's one that lets you see invisible, which is useful for when those Starborn guys are shrouded. You could easily play the game without them, though. The powers are just fluff. Give me a blaster, any day. :)

I am at around 120 hours doing my first playthrough. My thoughts about the powers (yes, spoilers ahead):

I'm halfway down the main quest, so I don't really know where it will be going, but I have collected four? powers now. My first thought was: Oh no, what is it with putting magic into every game? But I've thought about it a bit, and I'm a little more cool with it. In some conversation there was the mention of aliens, time travelers, or wherever the story will go; the history SciFi stories and movies is full of alien encounters where either the aliens have supernatural powers, or the protagonist gains them in one way or another. For now I've decided to be cool with that; also, I reminded myself that this isn't hard SciFi with emphasis on the Sci, but maybe more in the tradition of space fantasy matinee serials. Much less silly and pulp than, say, The Outer Worlds, but I can live with that. Heck, Star Wars has "magic" too.

Also, two of the powers are so useful. Personal atmosphere is a life saver when I have to haul all the resources to the lodge to research or craft (no, I don't really have a suitable outpost yet, and the lodge at least has infinite storage), and the one showing you all the perps around you is great for stealthing.
Yeah I can see that.
I hadn't discovered that Power yet, but Aura Whisper was my favourite in Skyrim :D

Haha, reminds me of my first minutes in X4: mounted a random freighter which took off from station. I ended up spaced, went through a stargate in space suit and got blown up by pirates.

I named my character Walker which is included as voiced and there are other characters named Walker which adds to immersion.
In fact I appreciate the magic powers, makes me go do silly stuff.

The brief session I had last night can be summed up like this: Suddenly realizing that these Ecliptic jerks I keep encountering everywhere, which Iā€™ve been treating like pirates because they always fire at me first, are the same band of mercenaries that all the security guards, both UC and FS, keep complaining about. Youā€™d think mercenaries would know not to hold onto a grudge. At this point, this silly grudge of theirs has cost them well over twenty times the value of the nice rifle this whole ā€œfeudā€ is over.

The ā€œschool busā€ I encountered was very amusing, though I think Bethesda missed a trick by not going with a name that resembled ā€œMrs Frizzle.ā€ :)

I have only a few more moons, and one life bearing planet, to survey before this system is complete.

Mrs Whitmore? That sounds more like a teacher than "Frizzle". I guess that must be some reference to some other media.

I kind of randomly explore planets fully. So far I enjoyed the ones with flora and fauna most. I mean obviously. There are a couple with sparse vegetation and more likeness to barren rocky bodies - the variation is sometimes very gradual and not just a simple If...else scheme.

For the love of god I have no idea where I get membranes. Did I really discover so few specimen that yield membranes? It's like the rare ingredient to concoct alien milkshakes.

Wait till you need lots of butter for your cooking. Considering how rare it is at shops or in ingame kitchens I plunder, it seems almost everyone has finally gone vegan in the future.

I already noticed. I thought maybe there was a way to make butter? Like with zoology? Living the life of a rancher? I am considering that for next playthrough. Or maybe NG+?

So I finally broke down and decided to indulge in customizing a starship I had erm, aquired. The ship in question featured a luxurious Stroud Eklund cockpit / bridge, which some house Va'runn were using as a pirate vessel. The main thing I really liked about this cockpit was not only was it massive, but it appeared to be heavily fortified from the outside with a rather tank like view from the inside which I found pleasing. It also can attach straight from the back and doesn't require a ladder to access. With four crew seats on board the bridge and with four bunks, a bathroom and a kitchenette in the hab with a table that seats four, it finally feels like something bigger than a scout ship. Double the cargo, fuel storage and heavier weaponry than my Frontier had which I kept in its original fit. Still very maneuverable and fast.

Yeah the shipbuilding could be a little awkward at first before you really get involved and it clicks but, one of those big grin moments when you finish and see your ship in the world, and explore inside it. Then fly it. I got those tingles from Space Engineers before after building some of my own ships cube by cube but ultimately very little to do with them after mastering survival. It just makes me giddy. Its very basic for now but from the cramped Frontier it feels utterly luxurious. There are multiple ship manufacturers all with their own parts cockpits and styles, I don't want to spoil it with details and counts but mine turned into a mishmash of what it started as and what was in stock at New Atlantis. Depending on where you go will open up new options and styles, I wasn't too picky, I just kind of made do with what was in my lap. It came out very Mamba esq which I think is a lovely ship in its own right so I dont mind the similarities.

If you arnt worried about ship manufacturer / location spoilers this link is a really good run down on how to get started and goes over the styles some.

Nice looking ship!

Well they catch tonnes of fish at Neon, but I haven't seen any cows and all meat tends to be synthetic.
I suspect not everyone made it off Earth and few if any earth animals.
