And … Krait Mk II, anyone?

For whomever was trying - the habs and cockpit on this are all on one level with the exception of the docker up top - the rest is “skin”.

How much RAM does Starfield really need? Requirements says 16GB for both minimum and recommended, would there be much performance gain for 32GB or am I better off going with 16GB?

Since they've disabled the OS disk cache by default (though there is a mod to enable this; which doesn't help fast SSDs much, but should help slower drives and CPUs significantly) and the game was built with consoles in mind, 16GiB of system is entirely sufficient for Starfield (assuming it's the only demanding application being run). I don't think I've ever seen the game use more than either 10GiB of system memory. That said, 32GiB is standard for new builds for a reason and you won't save much by cutting corners here.

I returned to Starfield today after a brief break to play some X4 (I purchased my first medium freighter, only to lose it to a Xenon raid on its maiden voyage! I couldn't accept that outcome, so I restored from a save and tried again. :)). Here's some stuff that happened::

There is a certain mission where you need to collect some money for a loan shark. I was supposed to intimidate the fella, but my persuasion efforts failed, leaving me with the option of paying off his debts myself, going back to the boss and admitting my failure, or attacking the guy when he refused to pay. I usually don't choose the violent option, but I didn't like how this guy was full of excuses and just refused to pay what he did borrow. I was hoping that after a few swings with my blade he would...get the point and pay the money, but he didn't, and I accidentally killed the guy!

(B&W for the noir elements :))

Security responded, so I had to flee. I wound up hiding in a restroom stall! :D I almost got away when one lone trooper searched the restroom and found me hiding. So, I had to knife her as well! I closed the stall, moved to a different one, and resumed hiding. After a few minutes, the search was called off. I changed clothes (it wasn't me!) and wandered away like I had nothing to do with what happened.

I decided to get out of Dodge. I always felt sorry for that overworked LIST kid (if you know that mission), so I decided to do a planetary survey. Kreet was my planet of choice, as I had been there before and knew it was a habitable world.

This took a surprising amount of time! I had to land at four different biomes to complete the survey. I finally found my last bit of fauna in the frozen mountains biome. It was this harmless trilobite:

With our work done and the sun setting, VASCO and I headed back, satisfied with a job well done.

In the background, you can see an abandoned starport that we cleared of pirates on the way to finding our trilobites. I am happy to say that I found all new PoIs for my time on Kreet.

I arrive at my repurposed Space Raccoon, and took one last look at the windswept and wintery landscape:

Yeah. I still like this game. :) I am now about 48 hours in, and feel like I have barely scratched the surface. I might have visited maybe eight or so systems, and maybe done 20% of the main campaign. New Atlantis is still my main base, with Cydonia on Mars being second. I've been to Neon only once - briefly - and never to Akila, so there are still two major cities I haven't even explored.

It should not be that hard. I wore the starting spacesuit for a long time without having much trouble. You do get a new one, and a pack, when you join Constellation as part of the main quest. Maybe you should do that much just to get the equipment.

I took a look at Eridani, though. Eredani is a system, and you didn't say which planet you were on. There are a couple of "deep freeze" moons in the system. Maybe one of those?
It was Eridani 1; I have the kit from constellation (was using a suit with +30 corrosion). I'll just give it a miss for the moment and do some other things.

To be fair this is the only time I've had a problem on a planet so it's not a show stopper.

Some experiences/comments regarding outposts and surface mining:
I had been waiting on trying a supply link, until I could outfit a suitable ship to assign to that run. Imagine my surprise when I finally built an experimental link landing pad at my test mining setup... and down comes a hauler ship I've never seen before and collects my mined resources for delivery on a contract. (I had been intending to try to complete the run manually, with my home ship, until I built a freighter.) Shockingly approachable setup, even though I'm very small time at this point, it's working.

And about ship building:
The designs others have shown above are some fantastic work.
Also had been preparing myself for needing to build a fleet of cargo haulers to do outpost work. Given the above experiences with supply links... apparently not.

Which leads me to my primary home ship, one I bought, then modified heavily. It feels like a massive waste of cash to sell off modules from a ship and replace them with new parts. But I'm beginning think I'm wrong on that. At this point in my character's play, this seems to be what the money is all about. I build some new design, and enjoy it for a while. During that play time, I've recouped most of the cash and can look at doing another build when I desire.

Maybe some of the above will work differently at a larger level than where I am now. Both points above counter to my expectation. But so far, so good (or much better than expected).

Ok, this ship-building thing has got me now. I designed and built my first ship from scratch, and I have to say it was really enjoyable.

I had enough funds to build a pretty decent class B ship. I was at the Deimos shipyard, so all the parts are that style -- very angular sort of stuff. It was quite the process to figure out all the needed modules, and then decide where and how they should attach to each other.

Going on board the first time and seeing how the layout actually worked -- wandering the halls and seeing my crew doing their jobs inside...pretty cool.

I'm sure I can do better, but this first one actually came out pretty well. It's quite formidable in battle. Flying a ship that I personally built into battle is quite a thrill. I shall be doing more of this, once I replenish my funds. I'm nearly out of cash suddenly!

This is the ship.

The Platypus! :)

10 million copies sold in just three weeks. I guess Bethesda did something right after all

But game is bad!

No, seriously. I had a good chuckle when I looked at the Starfield Youtube bubble yesterday - the current hot topics seem to be how bad the exploration is, how Todd Howard lied about it (he didn't), and how this game is totally different than the promised Skyrim in space. Also, the procedural quests from the mission board are sooooo bad. Skyrim was so much better (can you say radiant thieves guild quests?). Also, game is way too short.

Apparently Bethesda Game Studios are as lazy and incompetent as Frontier is. And every other game dev. Gamers on the internet are just a toxic bunch. I hate the internet.

Pack? Like the mining one? I was wearing the jet pack, not the mining pack, will that make a difference (assuming 'pack' is the thing you wear on your back...)
The packs suits and helmets all have stats for protection against radiation, temperature, airborne (dust storms I guess?) and corrosive. need to see what type of damage it is and find a suit or helmet to protect against it, some apparel has protection as well. I carry a hazmat suit as it has some protection against all 4 types of damage

Last night I didn't have much time to play, so I continued my survey of the uninteresting worlds of the Narion system. The moon I was on had a relatively close structure to the one Ecliptic was "guarding", so I decided to investigate. Turned out to be inhabited by pirates. So I cleared them out and took their stuff, finding a very nice Maelstrom in the process.

I hadn't found any He3 at the only POI visible from space, so I landed where my ship's scanners told me that there would be a lot. And guess who showed up soon after landing...

I have to admit, having a good jetpack on a low-grav moon is a lot of fun. Start sprinting, and you can float quickly over a couple kilometers, without ever touching the ground. Anyway, with my survey of the moon completed, and having gotten a bit more wealthy along the way, I visited the lifeless planet the moon was orbiting. It had some interesting geology, suggesting it had lost its atmosphere.

Once again, I had to visit a second site to complete my geological survey. And guess what happened soon after landing...

Turned out to be a UC Vanguard ship in distress.

It was at that point, I decided Ecliptic had more than paid the price for me tricking some naïve smuggler. I couldn't defeat the fleet they'd sent after me in space, but I could easily take one of their ships on the ground. The next time their fleet showed up, I'd give them their money. By this point, think I'd made ten times what they'd been asking by just selling the ships I'd captured, and I could use the peace of mind.

Since I now wanted to pay off their demands, naturally they didn't show up for a while traveling through space, rather than fast traveling everywhere. Much more fun this way, and much more cinematic, and I was reaching the point where I'd have to offload the looted weapons and "armor" to my crew if I didn't sell off my inventory. In the process of visiting the few shops I knew about in the Narion system, I helped one ship with repairs, agreed to deliver a package from a second (no time limit, though), and got a warning about pirates from a third, before the Ecliptic fleet finally showed up.

Hopefully seeing less of these jerks, I returned to New Atlantis to complete the mission, and sell the last of my loot. I love the variety of poses NPCs can take at times:

I'm going to visit the ship simulator once again so I can unlock the next level of piloting, and visit the shops of New Atlantis looking for materials. Once I've offloaded the harder to get mats at my main base and done whatever research I can do, it's time to go to the Sol System. I've put it off long enough!

I landed there briefly and had no issues, but it IS extremely corrosive. I have like rank 4 in environment, though, as well as decent gear. Anyway, you seem to have got on with the game, so have fun!

Yes, yes it is.

What jetpacks are good, and where can I get them? I'm using the Constellation jetpack and it has a poor jump assist which doesn't lift me much. Otherwise it's nice. I have jetpack training level 1.
It isn't the type of backpack that matters, it is the type of boost pack that determins how far you can boost. There are four types of boost packs you can have on your backpack: Basic, balanced, skip and power. Each offers different boost characteristics, and they vary in fuel consumption. I am most happy with the skip boost pack right now, because it sacrifices boost height for mobility and lets me do almost three boosts on a fuel load. The power boost pack gives you one strong boost, but then it is empty and needs to recharge. The balanced is in between the skip and the basic boost pack. The boost pack type can be modded at the spacesuit workbench if you have the skill and research for it. I would recommend just looting (or buying) backpacks with different boost packs and trying which one you like most. The backpack type itself makes a difference visually (of course) and in the resistances it offers, and in addition some have additional beneficial traits. I kept my backpack with a basic boost pack for a very long time (instead of using other looted packs with better boost) because it had great additional traits (I think it's 25% less O2 consumption when sprinting, 25% corrosive resistance and the chance to set nearby attackers on fire) and later changed the boost type at the workbench.

The grades of jetpack are basic, balanced, power and skip.
There is one behind the Hopetech building if want a freebie. Mostly I loot them off the pirates.

I finally unlocked the grade C modules after a series of running battles with Spacers. So I can now start building the big ship (using the registration of a Ghost I happened to acquire 🏴‍☠️) 2 more levels of ship design to unlock.

I might set up my own place on Porrima II. Nice little spot by the beach...

Okay, I finished the first run-through so it's time for a summary - no spoilers I think

1) Best bits

Xeno Biology is great - how EDO should have done it. Bad part is that the biology isn't recorded next to the planet like the rock composition.

Base building is good - if completely pointless. Other than RP the only reason to set up outposts is to get materials for suit / weapon upgrades. The only vital upgrade for me was the 'backpacks heal over time' one. Never cared about any other as you tend to find stuff with better options. Great fun setting up the trade networks until I realised they were pointless though - I just wish they had a reason to exist (ammunition synthesis would maybe do this as ammuniton can be a pain early on)

Side missions - often a lot of fun in the story. A few are a lot more complex than the main story.

Reactions of other ships to you flying the Mantis ship. Never got old :)

Epilogue was very nice review of the playthrough. NG+ also looking more interesting than most. Shame about the story before the Epilogue - see below ;)

2) Meh Bits

Ship building. I never bothered. When I needed a 30 Ly ship I just went and bought one. It was fine - and actually better in combat than my previous best ship. Same when I wanted a ship for the end of the story. The main time I saw ship interiors was when I was encumbered and so I couldn't just jump to the next system without re-entering the ship.

Zero point in building a trade network - you'll make more money selling random guns you pick up during missions.

After BG3 I expect missions to require at least a little cunning - so many cases where you could just walk up to a Safe in an open area and break in and no-one would care. Also the time an NPC 'married' me and 5 minutes later was asking who I was for a different mission. BG3 would have remembered.

3) Worst Bits

Main mission. 'Get X. now get another X. now another. and another. Now get a Y. And another Y. And another. And another. And .... another.' I was pretty convinced that this must just be the start of the main quest, then the credits rolled.

The UI. System Map should have a 'go to Outpost' option. Outpost linking was very confusing. No name search on the system map.

More crashes than most games (not so many this week?).

Storage in outposts. Especially setting up trade networks I would end up needing maybe 1T Iron to build something and spend 20 minutes finding where I had Iron stored in my base. And then the base would fill up all storage as there is no way to limit storage. Next playthrough I will ignore Outposts as (though they are a fun game), they are not useful for the actual game.

I enjoyed SF a lot but think it has less replayability than something like Fallout 4 where you could replay to see the outcome if you allied to a different faction. The only reason to come back is to hunt down the other unique organics - but I think I'd rather use google.

Thanks for explaining this. I have suit design skill level 1, and the Pack mods 1 research project is in progress, but three of the four needed materials are not available currently. I checked the backpacks that I have salvaged, and one of them has the "Skip capacity boostpack" feature, but it has zeros in the Thermal and Corrosive parameters, so it's clearly worse in protection than my Constellation pack, and I think protection is more important than jump capability, because so many planets have a toxic atmosphere.
