Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

I'm just hoping it's not too Skyrim. One single "I used to be an Adventurer but then I took a laser bolt to the Knee" will have me uninstalling rapidly and blowing raspberries at Bethesda

On the other hand "I used to be an adventurer but then I took a laser bolt to the knee and now I'm a cyborg" would go down well!

Also Bethesda are well known for bug ridden releases, that are usually saved by modders. Do not expect it to go smooth from the 1st day.

It's going to be more of a Skyrim/Mass Effect mashup rather that an Elite or Star Citizen competitor. But that's ok with me

You wanted a space rpg? Can't really remember any. Steam era brought forth a couple rogue likes in space but real RPGs? Kinda rare I say.
The Outer Worlds ? also Star Wars KOTOR, Everspace 2 ? There are a few of them around. I recall a few mixes with space RPG + RTS (Nexus project IIRC) or space RPG + Rogue-like (some games with base mechanics like FTL) that were quite good too. Granted for Bethesda it's a new territory.

My feeling is that Starfield will be more the Elite sequel that I was hoping for than ED has turned out to be.

Time will tell.
Considering that flying you spaceship is a very small part of Starfield, I'm not sure why you feel that way. But we'll find out on Sunday I guess.

On top of all the ones Surefoot mentioned, how about the Mass Effect series? Or STO? There have been lots of Space RPGs.

Think of all that time I'll be able to spend wandering around my self designed ship interior going to planets that look as though they might be varied and have atmospheres and everything :)

Oh yeah, KotOR. Outer Worlds I rather count into the renaissance era of space games. Which I would date coming up around the time the Zombie games slowly petered out. SC and ED went in in the perfect spot I'd say. So far there was Mass Effect maybe spearheading the interest and today space is not an uncommon genre anymore, but RPGs are still kinda rare among them. X was always there but it was very niche in the beginning. Its iterations saw increasing story-driven contents added. The time is ripe for a good open world space RPG.

Yeah I didnt mention Mass Effect as it's borderline really on RPG territory (mostly for the dialogues and NPC progression) and more of a good old adventure/action, in my mind it's there with Jedi Fallen Order / Survivor, the newer Tomb Raider trilogy, etc. But yeah it takes place in space, mostly, so there's that ;) FWIW I expect Starfield to fall squarely into the RPG genre, compared to these.

I'm a space nutter and would play anything.
There was like a time between around 2000 - 2010 or so where the "space games" really felt lacking. 4x dint reach the level of Master of Orion. Space action simmery dint get close to SW Tie Fighter. There was X and Star Wars - and Star Wars only because of the renaissance via prequel. You did the KotOR and enjoyed the story, but the gameplay was kinda terrible. Mass Effect 1 was kinda terrible gameplay. ME2, not much better. Took until 2012 to get a real good action RPG with good pacing (until you played the MP - after that not even insanity was a challenge anymore). FO was always a weird one: Futuristic but retro style - it kinda worked - now it's down to a new take trying to make a decent action RPG. I was a fan of the bullet-time function of the wrist-tool in Fallout. They removed that in FO76 due to MP. I wonder if it's gone for good in Starfield - my guess is: yes.

You mispelled Freespace 2 ;)

I loved it too. Found the combat system in The Outer Worlds suffered a lot from its absence. I really hope it's back for Starfield.

There is a black hole for me around the millenial turnover: I didn't have the money to afford new hardware and went a long time with old stuff. As result I couldn't run many games - Freespace or wossnames is just one. There was a wad of new upcoming 3D tech games that just didn't work on my stuff.

IIRC that was put in to keep FO 1 and 2 fans happy because they were turn based, and a lot of the old fans didn't want twitch based FPS gameplay. wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't in Starfield, They don't have any legacy fans to try to appease. Personally I never used it even though I was a fan of 1 and 2

Heh, I never played FO1 or FO2. I) kinda tried but found it incredibly janky. Pip-Boy time dilation is cool because all the sounds wind down, too - the effects - all of it. And when a Fatman edges itself into the center of attention menacingly that's even better. The inevitability (is not a word is it?) of fate - that's gaming with a philosophical edge.

Well, tomorrow is the big day? Some Bethesda/MS show case for Starfield, from what I understand.

Looking forward to what comes out of it. The last few months have been rotten with stale videos going over the same stuff that we know to be in the game.

Hopefully we'll get some fresh fruit from this. Less speculation, more information!

Man it's going to be SO PAINFUL for me - I've got a deadline fall of this year so Christmas might be the first time I get to download the game. I guess I can take heart from the fact I'll have been able to drool over other people's videos of the game to that point. And with any luck I'll have a fistful of mods to choose from when I do get to play...

I'm in East Coast USA at ET. M$ just showed us a teaser with a few new game play bread crumb assets. Then had the audacity to tell us to stick around until the end of the 1:50min showcase. WHAT. THE. HELL. M$???

God Howard had BETTER show us some real time, in game engine game play. Or else it's going to be a whole new definiton of Armaggedeon incomming. The only decent game I've seen since this dangling carrot is the follow up to CP 2077.

YES. FINALLY. Neon. Neon. Neon. Neon.Neon. Neon. Neon. Neon.
Neon on my mind.

OMFG. THE OBLVION ADORING FAN SUPERFAN IS BACK!!!! SO THAT'S WHAT THAT UNWANTED HERO MYSTERY TRAIT WAS IN THE REVEAL LAST YEAR!! THANK YOU BETHESDA !!!

Other cool stuff revealed:
  • HOLY SH8TE. At the very end of the game play, the PC possess some seriously OP Skyrim magicka-Darth Vader Sith Lord psychic powers. They literally pushed some half dozen enemy NPCs. BACKWARD. Using ZERO PHYSICAL CONTACT @1:46:30. JEEZUS. All by simply raising their hand and channeling some sort of (alien fragment energy sourced?) power through their hand??!? Seems the PC touched a unique looking surface before this happened.
  • Bethesda WENT FULL DAGGERFALL PROC GEN IN SF. POCs including flora/fauna ON PLANETS ARE ALL PROC GEN. Which means whatever non mission generated unique weapon(s), flora/fauna etc that your friend finds will likely NOT exist when you visit the same POC area!. Which also means this will be a NIGHTMARE for ppl doing YT playthoughs and solution guides on social media! As annoying as this may be for some, it guarantees SF is going to be engaging and replayable for a LONG LONG time....
  • Grand Theft Spaceship/Ship piracy/illegal boarding also confirmed.
  • Salvage of space wreck (from exploration or after a dog fight) confirmed.
  • Seems your PC can chill out on vacation whenever they feel like it. With or without their crew! Totally immersion blasting!
  • Food consumption will definitely be a central feature, not just for health/combat buffs but survival as well. There's going to be A TON of food based mods on Nexus
  • Romncing NPC characters confirmed.
  • Adopting children STILL NOT confirmed though.
  • Random encounters with NPC in space flight ranging from peaceful (trading, cultural exchange etc) to flat out piracy (comandeering/illegal boarding dog fights)
  • Possibly humanoid ALIENS? Based on encounters with deep space humans who've been out of touch with their species in the bubble.
  • Collector's watch, journal, and customized SF xbox controller & headsets confirmed). A CUSTOMIZED HOTAS WOULD'VE BEEN NICE THOUGH.

Home base: NEON

Background: Cyber Runner.(Looks like this is where the $$$ will be smuggling/doing dirty tech trade for Ryujin)

Traits:
  • Kid Stuff. Always need Ma to make that awesome home cooking. And KCD bandage you up when the UC/FSC/CF and the universe kicks your teeth in.
  • Neon Street Rat. Needed to get those special lucrative contracts exclusive only to Neon denizens
  • Serpents Embrace. Since it now appears traits are going to have buff effects, might as well make it Grav Jump affiliated.

SHIPS ARE MULTI LEVEL BESIDES BEING MODULAR!!! Tons of room to customize where to locate personal habs, sci labs, crafting/cooking areas etc. etc.

Shipbuilding and staffing is BOSS. Seems build/buying Anaconda sized ships might be possible as well....

You can also skill up with unique skills like NEURO STRIKES. OMG. That's going to take assassin/stealth play to the next level!

God this reveal in ship building/customization capabilty makes up for not being a true flight sim like ED/NMS. It's everything I wanted from a space game and more. Thank you Bethesda!
