Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

The aspect that concerns me is the flight-model. I'm very fond of ED in this regard, and very not fond of NMS*. SF looks to be more NMS than ED. But, time will tell.

* It's fine for a game set in space, and good enough. But ED nailed this experience and feel, for me at least.
Starfield isn't a space sim, it's first and foremost an RPG, so I don't think my HOTAS will be coming out of the box (where it's been since you know who dropped VR support in Odyssey )
NMS did nothing for me either 💤

The issue there is that with such a granular level of ship customisation, unless space combat is decent it does not really justify having such an elaborate system- in short it has to count for something otherwise its excess flannel that does nothing.

Oh I agree with you, but I don't think the flight model will come anywhere close to ED levels. Mouse and keyboard will probably suffice. Now if someone comes up with a VR patch ...🤞

Yup, as much as my hotas is still plugged in and set up for using in occasional bouts of DCS or IL2...and star citizen ...I'll be using my Xbox controller for Starfield... if for nothing else bar simplicity and the analogue inputs on the sticks. The game is designed around it after all 🤷‍♂️

I started off back in 2015 playing ED on the Xbox flying with a controller so I doubt Starfield will task the inputs too much :)

Go on, get the Starfield one, you know you want to. May as well get the headphones and watch too. You'll cut a fine figure I'm sure. The ultimate errrr???....Fielder?

Jeez, I've got way too many controllers as it is...and not the cheap plastic shyte ones you get for free with an Xbox or PlayStation since I do use them a lot. Muscle memory from 10 years on Xbox means I'm fairly handy with a controller but still kinda like a cow with a machine gun using M/KB on PC.

2x Xbox Elite V2 pro's (PC and Xbox)
Nacom V4 pro ultimate (PC & PS4)
Razer Wolverine V2 pro (PC, PS4 & PS5)

...and 3 older Xbox Elite V1's and a plethora of 3rd party asymmetric PlayStation 4 controllers since I can't stand the symetrical thumbstick dual-shock PS controllers...I've got a few of those as well... including the dual-sense PS5 controller sitting in a drawer.

Any of those top 3 cost more than my X56 hotas. They're E-sport competition level things...kinda the controller equivalent of a Virpil hotas. The Starfield controller?...Welp, it's just a basic, run of the mill cheap plastic shyte Xbox controller with a fancy casing (and a fancy pricetag)...same with the headset, even that doesn't compare very favourably with my Hyper-X revolver s's

My (run of the mill cheap plastic shyte :ROFLMAO: ) Xbox controller is fine for NMS, and hopping back and forth to KB+Mouse is relatively painless, so I'm with you in expecting that this will be enough for SF.

PS ** You foul heretic! ;-)

I had to go PS for Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon: Forbidden West and TLoU2...didn't have to buy either the PS4 pro or the PS5 though, a mate gifted the PS4 pro and I was given the PS5 as payment for a favour. I've kept the faith though...Xbox series X in the living room.

**Star citizen....a big boy made me do it then ran away :)

I don't know about that, I've not been watching everything, but without confirmation, of which I'd be happy to be corrected with some, I think that the focus on exploration probably would mean that it won't just be POIs that you drop into, it's just that you could choose to. If it doesn't allow you to free roam in a spaceship above the surface of a planet, then that would indeed be a bit of a disappointment.

I'm going to reply to my original post as I have seen confirmation, based on what the big Bethesda cheese said, that Starfield will not allow descent to, or free flying over, planets and it will be a selection screen that gives way to a cut scene that loads the area. Being that this is the case, I have to say that Starfield has pretty much lost all of its appeal to me and, while I think Starfield will be successful, and I hope it is, those saying that it's not a direct competitor to Elite, or Star Citizen/NMS for that matter, are correct. I'd say at this point, it's possible that Starfield is more of a competitor to Metroid Prime 3, which employed a similar system, albeit in a less open world way.

I guess what will happen is that the players of Elite etc.. who were looking mostly for the single player rpg story driven game that these really aren't, will be satisfied with Starfield. How much of the playerbase that will be is tough to estimate, but I guess we will see some time after Starfield's release, once the initial hype of the release has died down.

However, my son wants to get it, so I'll be getting it for him and get to see some of the cooler parts via him, which will be enough for me.

It's never been touted as a replacement for any space 'sim' type game...it's a single player RPG set in space. In that respect, not being able to fly down to a planet surface or fly around in your spaceship once down there is no big thing.

We've got a couple of games that already do that kinda thing, Starfield is a Bethesda RPG first and foremost...and has never been advertised (or sold) as anything except exactly that 🤷‍♂️

Sure, I understand that, Bethesda may have not but there's plenty of 'tubers etc.. that are, so it was worth checking to see either way, at least for me. There's still crossover though, and if it did allow the freedom of seamless flight etc.. then I think some of the comparisons, even if only a single player, would be more more fitting.

The Starfield controller?...

Its pretty good actually. I had 2 xbox controllers, just the plain basic black ones with the front face replaced with decorative ones (extremerate) from amazon. Doing this to me generally beats the limited official controllers... except for this one, and probably the 20th anniversary one.

For a custom controller, its very nice. I do have one issue with it though, the front face on all the advertisments looks like a blueish bleached white.. in the hand, its a very noticeable yellow white, exactly like 70s80s plastic left out in the sun and starting to yellow. Well i guess its not strong enough yellow that if you wanted to see it as white, its white, but to me its nothing like the pictures and very yellow. Fits the game sure, but i think its dulled the impact of the printing on the front.

Anyway, its still amazing and i wouldn't give it back.

ps. on pc, you can enable copilot mode for all games, so its been great for playing with my son.

You'll be okay. Really star citizen doesn't need you that much, you can play another game then come back later. Or maybe it does :)

EDIT: I quite like story based rpg's.. so will be for that.. but whether it replaces elite depends on how well it makes you "feel" like you're in space. That's why i always questioned when people asked for earth like biomes in elite.. that's counterproductive to being in space.. and the most exteme fantasy on what life outside of our planet would be like. Making trees and grasses and things with 4 legs etc seems so scientifically unlikely it breaks suspending disbelief in my mind.

I like the look of it sure...but for the pricetag, it should have been based on at least, the Elite V2 with adjustable tension metal thumb sticks, high gain pots, adjustable trigger tensioners, interchangeable thumbsticks and D-pads, rubberised grips, custom hard case full of extras and spares, desktop mounted magnetic charger and 4 extra flappy paddle button extenders. Basing it on the basic Xbox series X standard controller but with only different coloured plastic is a bit of a rip-off to be honest. Even the Elite V2 comes in PlayStation white and black as well as the standard black version...now that with the Starfield paintjob on it I would have bought without hesitation 🤷‍♂️

Yeah alot of people who passed on the controller mentioned it wasn't the elite.. sounds like once you get used to it you don't go back? Maybe one day.. im still pcmr at heart, and grudgingly use controllers.. im only interested for the pretty shells. Having said.. even as a controller noob i think extremely highly of xbox from it.. regardless of the vibration and expensive feel of the ps5, the series controllers somehow feel better in the hand, and the fact they take double a batteries makes me so happy. I have dead ps3 controllers that look really bad now. They also easily support decorative ones and sell them too.

I guess for starfield i'm also enjoying i can build my own collectors edition than needing to buy that watch.. i take issue with collectors editions costing as much as actual consoles.. at least with that little content.

The Xbox Elite V2's are full bluetooth 5 and have an internal built in battery that lasts 40 hours on a full charge. I've tried loads of Xbox controllers...the Elite V1's were pretty good (and heavy), the V2's are just a league apart...but on the expensive side if you don't use a controller a lot. Like you mentioned though, once you've tried an Elite controller, there's no going back to the standard one.
