Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

The Dishonored series came closest. That's another of my favorites. But I'll never forget when Thief came out -- it was a revelation at the time. I've tried re-playing those old games, but I'm too spoiled by graphics and UI now, heh. Still, in my memory the Thief games will shine forever.
Dishonored went past me. I guess it's late console port to PC - I lose those on radar quite iften

Well you missed a great one. I don't remember it being a console port, though. Maybe. It didn't seem like one, ran great, excellent controls. I still play it from time to time and have hundreds of hours in the series.

Yeah I seen general good feedback on it but there seems to be a difference in reception between the parts.

Has anyone else had the game randomly switching missions?
It get rather confusing when a quest marker pops up mid firefight only for it to turn out to be my own ship 'cause the computer has decided I should be having a conversation with someone in another star system...

Yeah, I’ve also had a couple of broken/bugged quests that I cannot complete.

Literally my ‘Tour Guide’ refuses to move from the spot 😂

So far the main story didn't show any true gems of story telling. Instead I found myself quite suprised how engaging and interesting the UC faction missions strain is. That is like a main questline. Barret also has an interesting companion questline - kinda Erin Brockvich theme, but darker.
Did some Cydonia stuff and used photo mode for a stupid fetch quest. Now a cute kid drawing of space frog is lining up through the loading screen rotation. Have a nice screenshot opportunity in game - use it for photo mode. You'll get this as staple loadscreen.
Gonna wrap up Barret missions and then hunt the Heart of Mars and then maybe setup more bases, but honestly: I'm horrified by all the logi runs.

That is activity popups. Mostly companion timed talk sessions.

I live very frugal and humble and believe me I understand. If there was ever a game worth buying at full price this is it.
Yeah, I'm getting that sense. There are some very few games that I'll pay $60, and this may just be one of them.

There is never harm in waiting for polish and mods or discounts though.
I've been thinking about this, and even if there is a sale this year, it will likely be puny, like 25% max. Usually it takes a good year or more before you get those amazing Steam sales, and I doubt I can wait that long!

It's kind of like how RDR2 made an authentic world you could loose yourself in. I feel like this is the closest a Space game has come to the RDR2 treatment which is a high water mark in gaming for me.
Funny you mention RDR2, because it dawned on me yesterday that I've yet to complete the main story (as you say, I lost myself in the world), and if I get Starfield too soon, I many never finish RDR2, LOL!

It's going to save me money in the same way Elite saved me money. This is very potentially years of entertainment.
I was originally willing to pay full price for Odyssey back before it released, back when I thought it would actually be a good DLC. We all know how that story ends. Which does make me a little cautious, because people are praising Starfield in the same way certain people have praised Odyssey. The big difference for me between researching Odyssey and Starfield is that I want my "first time" to be special, so I really don't want to spoil anything about the game, which eliminates watching long playthroughs like I did with Odyssey.

So I guess a litmus test for Starfield would be, are there any Starfield fanatics who hate / strongly dislike / don't love Odyssey? Or are they two peas in the same pod?

That's a weird question. The two are nothing alike. I happen to like them both, but not because they are similar in any way.

I strongly disliked Oddity/Odyssey. On many levels. Horizons desperately needed finishing, but they throw this junk at the wall to see if it sticks? Whatever.

Most of the Odyssey hype was before it came out. Once it was released everyone could see the state it was in. Starfield is already out and many people are playing it. You can go see all the individual reviews yourself and even compare the aggregate Steam reviews to the Odyssey ones.

Okay, but do you love Starfield?

That's a weird question. The two are nothing alike. I happen to like them both, but not because they are similar in any way.
There was some thread about how Elite is the bestest ever and people were saying that Starfield just copied Odyssey, hence my apprehension. If they are truly nothing alike (which is weird to say, because I've seen some very short clips of Starfield that look quite similar to Odyssey ground installation raids), then I'll take that as a good thing.

Though I don't want to throw out the baby with the bath water. For example, I wish ALL games had Elite's Stellar Forge when it comes to rendering the skybox and planets, or at least made an effort to pretend. How does Starfield do with this? Do planets actually orbit the sun (evidenced by changing phases and retrograde orbits over time), or is Starfield the stereotypical "planets are painted over random stars on a revolving skybox" model? No that this would kill the game for me, but if Starfield was to borrow anything from Elite (we already know flight model is not on the list), a realistic skybox would be my first request.

Yes I believe they do orbit each other, someone did a time lapse video, although their representation of their orientation in the system or orbital view is not accurate so it’s hard to go to a specific point if you want to.

That being said, buy it or don’t buy it, it’s up to you. I’m not getting commission or anything.

Starfield is everything I wanted from Odyssey x1000. I've played more Starfield in thr past week then I've gamed in the past year...

I'm losing myself and being blown away in constantly in 1080p at all the lowest graphical settings. I can't imagine what this would be like on ultra at higher resolutions.

Lately this feels like a NMS with Elite dreams.txt with RDR2 / Cyberpunk world building with a mix of Jurassic Park. I've been exploring and big gaming hunting massive Hunter Crickets in a decidious forest. Cat and mouse tense moments. I watch them take prey many times their size and watch them feed....

I'm sorry but I have to go back to the Starfield. I should really be sleeping for work...

That's a strong endorsement for me, because I really did want Odyssey to be great when it was first announced. That said, I already know that Starfield won't be everything I wanted out of Elite, because the lack of flight model and the inability to fly over the surface of a planet are pretty big misses for me.. If, however, I think of Starfield as my next Skyrim (which I lost well over a year to) instead of "Odyssey done right", then it may still be worth it.

It does sadden me that you can design your own ships, but there is very little opportunity to actually fly those ships. Ironically the crown (flying and exploring in custom-built ships) may still go to humble Space Engineers, which I actually started playing again and have been enjoying, at least for now.

But keep wooing me, I won't object!

I’m not sure I qualify. I liked Odyssey enough to finally replace my eight year old computer, there was plenty to like, but I was not a big fan of how some aspects on-foot portion was handled, not to mention all the obviously missing content that remains obviously missing.

Starfield feels like how Odyssey should’ve been done, especially when it comes to exploration:
  • A brief initial survey of the system upon arrival
  • A brief survey of the planet from orbit
  • Returning to base to outfit a planetside expedition
  • An extensive planetside expedition that may include:
    • A mineralogical survey
    • A geological survey (may require visiting multiple sites)
    • A biological survey (may also require visiting multiple sites)
    • An archeological survey
    • Dealing with a variety of issues, from paranoid prospectors, rogue robots, pirates, religious fanatics, insane spacers, hostile alien life, lone bounty hunters, military operations, and who knows what else
