Big Elite Streamers Giving Up On Streaming Elite?

The debate is interesting - 70% of steam reviews are negative (I did read a couple of pages of the reviews) so the expansion must be tat...

Oddly, my friends list recently have had a majority playing Odyssey (although I know 1 no longer will play because of performance issues and bugs, which is fair) last evening 9 of 9 online, night before 9 of 10, and previously up to 15 of 19...

So, overall reviews are poor, but, for me, most of the friends I play with are playing Odyssey in preference to Horizons.

No, I can't explain why, don't ask ;)
Similarly, looking at the logs from the Hutton Helper:
Since Sunday night midnight - 64 people have been active. Over half are on Odyssey. Of the remainder, that includes XBox and PS4 people.
SInce we updated the HH (that's AFTER Odyssey launched - can't remember if the stats reset from our side was with patch 3 or 4), we've got stats from 546 individuals - and 68 no shows. Of the no shows, we can't tell if they're playing and not running the HH (via EDMC) or are genuinely not playing. Split is actually slightly HIGHER on Odyssey players than in the last 36 hours (ie more people playing Odyssey)

Salt quota in the group via discord/facebook/other direct channels? 0. There's one person who acknowledges that his potato might not be the best choice to run at high res, and a handful for whom space legs don't hold any fascination.

That seem like a totally unbiased source.
I'm sure we can do extrapolations for the entire game from those 500ish people.

For anyone giving that other alpha game crap on stability; I’ve had zero nights since update 5 playing without a CTD using the system map In populated systems. I’ve yet to be dumped on my butt from that other buggy alpha.

Not looking forward to the months ahead if I’m honest. Love the detail and open world of the other game but I’ve done most everything it has to offer now and there isn’t enough of an economic simulation to really grab my interest so not really a viable replacement for me yet.

Crappy place to be after my initial excitement for Odyssey.

We both know friend list for game popularity means less than nothing. I mean, you can't have a more biased tool, by definition.
Some people have already claimed their friend list doesn't play anymore.
Indeed, my friends list is microscopic in comparison to the number allegedly playing ED - but as we are now informed of which version an active friend is playing, it is useful to me.
I also know that some of my friends do not own Odyssey currently (no surprise) so if more of those were online at the same time as me, the bias could be entirely the other way ;)

Thanks - although I should've been clearer in my post: I'm not really in the market for those alternatives. If I want to race, I hook up my T300 wheel and boot up driving sims (like AC/ACC), if I want to enjoy a flight model for the sake of it, I prefer MSFS2020, at least that has a realistic physics and (live) weather model based on reality.

I like the ships in Elite, and how they fly - I also enjoy tremendously experimenting with ship builds but that requires roles to fit them into, so even the barebones gameplay loops of EDH are sufficient for that (I enjoy all activities in the game so got a lot out of that).

It's in fact what kept me going throughout the content drought in recent years, but it started to get stale around Christmas '20 and I put a lot of hope into EDO that that would expand on my favourite activities (i.e. ship building) so you can imagine how disappointed I am that it doesn't really bring anything new at all to the table, other than making a case for flying smaller ships that are fitted with missile racks. I already did that in Horizons tbf. We didn't even get a single new ship (or SRV), in a major expansion, for a game that's primarily about flying space ships.

I accept that it is what it is, but I'm not particularly excited about it as a result.
I understand: each to their own! For the 'flying spaceships' aspect though; the flying bit is available in better forms elsewhere these days.
ED does have a variety of other stuff though too, so I hear you.

Given I was one of those I just want to say that I still feel compelled to play EDO over EDH - I like the concept of getting out of my ship, just not really how it was implemented - also just because someone is in the game doesn't necessarily mean they're having a ball... last night I didn't do much other than looking around a planet and scanning some plants for half an hour, it was alright and I was reasonably well immersed.

The night before I had a really rough time (causing an appropriately salty post towards the end of my session). The ratio between good and bad sessions has gone down significantly since EDO launched unfortunately; I'm still trying to get as much enjoyment out of it as I can, given I paid 47 Euros for it and I won't get a refund at this stage so may as well. Don't think I'll stop playing Elite either, but I do play it a fair bit less often and for shorter periods of time.

Given the tumbleweed situation post patch 5 and with the added performance issues that it brought about (while not fixing others) I'm currently in two minds what the imminent future looks like. I don't want to burn out on a game that's in a desperate state, but I still need my fix.... food for thought for sure and yes of course, First World Problems (tm).

That is all, carry on :)

Anyone listing to Elite Week, they still cover Elite…. Kind-of.
I won’t be surprised if they change name to SC or NMS week

I'm getting further into X4, and while the flight model isn't as good as Elite's (in terms of action/excitement) it does convey fairly well operating a ship in space - while I'm still in the small starter ship I'm looking forward to upgrade to a larger freighter/warship/fleet carrier at some point. I'm also playing it with M&K (I tried it with my pad, and I can get the controls to almost match Elite's layout, but M&K feels more natural especially considering the UI) it's quite a different feel but ... it's alright. Not better, but it does the job, unlike NMS whose flight model is pants. But I play that more as a survival/builder game, as opposed to a space sim.

I agree for sure though, there are options out there nowadays, which is great for the player in general.

I thought you'd stopped altogether, sorry, so discounted you 😱
Lol - ok so that caveat individual was me then :D No I just threw a hissy fit the other night, have not left for good (you wouldn't see me here any more if I did) but I'm spreading my free time a bit more across other games. I can't see Elite (even in its current state) not being part of my active library but I need to adapt my playstyle a bit to avoid the (many) pitfalls that are in the game currently. Will have to see how that goes.

Just like I take content creators' opinions (especially those who are suddenly "in love" with SC while simultaneously plastering referral codes and whatnot all over their feeds, descriptions, and everything else) I do the same with Steam. First, there was a fairly concerted campaign launched on the ED Subreddit to slam the game review-wise, as well as make sure it was tagged with "Early access". (You think these forums are salty, Reddit makes this place look like Camelot, there's a thread running over the weekend slamming FDev for using different fonts for the shield and hull strength indicators that had over 1.5k "likes"). Also littered with "casual" gamers, and folks who picked ED up on mega sale and/or free who never even paid for Odyssey but are still slamming it "because bloke on the internets told me to."

THAT'S NOT TO SAY THERE ARE PLENTY OF STEAM USERS WHO ARE JUSTIFIABLY UNHAPPY AND GENUINELY EXPERIENCING ISSUES.

Just saying that it's diluted a bit. (Which is more than "few" and less than... ahh, ye know what I'm on about...)
