Bob the Keelback - Memorial run to Beagle Point

Day 14. 24. December 3302

After a very... very long pause Tom is finally ready to continue his journey. He is very happy that he was able to upgrade his software at Jaques so he can finally land on Planets.

Tom was very happy to be able to fly again after his long pause...

... he directly jumped into supercruise to get to the nearest moon to attempt his very first planetary landing..

...Tom was really excited but also nervous...

...getting closer and closer Tom realized that because he is able to land on Planets now he doesnt need to stay in Colonia to get the resources he needs for the jump boosts, he can just collect them on his way to Beagle Point.

After getting carefully closer to the surface Tom managed to land... And just took 2% Hull Damage!

After he enjoyed the view for a short time Tom made it safely back to Jaques Station...

Day 14. 25. December 3302

Today Tom did start to fly towards Sagittarius A* but before he did that he did visit Colonia Hub.

Tom is very excited to head out into Deep Space again...

...but also thinks that he is going to miss the easiness of space stations...

Tom is also excited because Colonia Hub is the first Planetary Outpost he is going to land on...

... during Supercruise Tom saw a nice looking gas giant...

...after passing the gas giant Tom got closer and closer to Colonia Hub...

...after a short time Tom landed safely on Colonia Hub...

...which also has a nice view...

...after a short visit Tom wanted to leave the Station but then a little SRV got Toms attention and he decided to land near him..

...both talked to each other and the SRV reavealed his name is Sam...

...during the conversation Sam told Tom that he wanted to leave Colonia Hub to explore the Galaxy...

... and that no spaceship wanted to take him with them, Tom allowed the SRV to come aboard so they can Explore the Galaxy and other Planets together. Both where very excited and as soon as Sam was aboard Tom did start and jumped to the next system thereby continuing his journey...

...Tom did show what he saw to Sam through the displays in his Vehicle Bay and Sam was amazed by all the new Stars he saw...

...after a few jumps Tom landed on a Moon to gather some recources for some FSD Injections together with Sam...

...shortly after the landing Sam went out to explore the Planet and look for the recources Tom needed...

...the crater near the landingside was pretty big...

...after some time Sam found some Germanium and brought it to Tom...

...shortly after the find Tom picked up Sam and they continued their journey...

...after a few more jumps Tom reached his waypoint together with Sam in the Vehicle Bay. Tom landed on EOCH PRUAE MO-H D10-2117 A 1. It was a good day for Tom, he continued his journey and met someone that wants to help him. But most importantly...

...he found a new friend.

Tom wonders what he is going to find in the future...

...more beautiful places? Other ships? Or maybe something else?

What about the Thargoids and other Aliens?

Are they hiding... or are they behing hidden?

Whatever Tom is going to find he can share it with his new friend Sam...

Tom also wonders where he is going to be when they are no longer hidden...

and what will they do? Are we already at war without even knowing it?

Whatever happens Tom will never give up!

Day 16. 28. December

Tom thinks about what he is going to do once he reaches Beagle Point...

...will he stay? Keep exploring the Galaxy? Or fly straight back to Colonia or even the Bubble?

But.. but what if he does not make it to Beagle Point because he chrashed or something else happend to him?

Will he be remembered? Will someone else finish the Memorial Run for him?

Or will he simply be forgotten?

Whatever happens...

Tom will try his best and not give up, to get to Beagle Point

And once he gets there...

...he didnt do it for himself...

but for Bob and all the others who perished and wanted to explore the Galaxy

And even if he fails...

at least he tried...

and the closer he gets to Beagle Point...

every lightyear...

every lightsecond...

every kilometer...

the journey is more and more worth the effort.

Only 1 more jump to Sagittarius A*...

after a short jumptime, he made it...

he arrived at Sagittarius A*

He travelled so far but yet...

still so many Lightyears to go. And what will he find?

But sadly his arrival didnt happen without an incident... for about 5 seconds his Maneuvering Thrusters weren't responding, thus he chrashed and his hull integrity is now reduced to 16%. Unsure if he is going to make it to Bealge Point, he will continue his journey and try his best to get there.

How many FSD boosts can you make? With no shields, 16% hull won't last long upon making planetary landings - it's very easy to lose 2% even if you are careful - so you might need someone to help you out mining for the ingredients in planetary rings or asteroid belt clusters, as before. Does Tom have a mining laser? (Also, what's your jump range now you have a SRV on board?)
I salute Tom's adventurous spirit o7 and I can assure you that neither he nor Bob will be forgotten, no matter what happens.

An interesting side-story that was a consequence of Bob's brief but wonderful life:
During Bob's life, one of the places that he chose to visit was HIP 63835. This is a spectacular system with an O star primary and three black holes, as well as a variety of planets. After his death, I bought a Keelback of my own, the 'Eyes Wide Open' and, like Bob, visited this system and turned in the data to the exploration CG that was in progress at the time. A few months after this, The Galactic Intern was looking for places of high scan value to visit during a live transmission, to compete with a colleague to see who could earn the most credits from exploration within an hour. CMDR Edelgard von Rhein remembered this system and directed The Galactic Intern there and then assisted in his safe return to a nearby starport in the Inars system. So The Galactic Intern has also followed in Bob's footsteps!

With no shields, 16% hull won't last long upon making planetary landings - it's very easy to lose 2% even if you are careful - so you might need someone to help you out mining for the ingredients in planetary rings or asteroid belt clusters, as before. Does Tom have a mining laser? (Also, what's your jump range now you have a SRV on board?)

-During a ship recall Tom lost 2% and is now down to 14%

Today Tom did travel 998.51ly towards Beagle Point...

... it was uneventful except for a planetary landing that cost him 2% of is Hull which is now down to 14%

Tomorrow Tom will spend the entire day jumping from system to system trying to get as close to Beagle Point as he can within one day.

Day 18. 30. December 3302

Today Tom did travel 9,236.82LY (+ aprox. 1000ly due to a course change) towards Beagle Point...

it took some time but...

the closer he gets to Beagle Point...

the more he honours Bobs legacy.

Sam however is a bid sad...

because as long as Tom is jumping from system to system without landing on any planets he can just watch.

But Tom is soon going to attempt another planetary landing to acquire more resources for FSD Injections

Some people said that after a certain event, exploring is going to be more, dangerous...

what did they mean by that...

is someone or something going to make it more difficult for explorers?

Tom thinks that we maybe, someday, will find a area of space where we are not welcome...

and if that happens are we going to accept that we are not welcome there?

Or are some of us going to fly to their space to invade?

Or for resources...

Whatever is going to happen, we have to try to be ready. Even if we cant be.

They will soon continue their journey towards Beagle Point but will for now explore the nebula a bit as well as the nearby neutron stars

Tom is going to need help to reach Beagle Point for -about- the last 40 jumps. He is going to attempt each jump with minimal fuel in his tank so he can jump further but this means he would need to refuel every jump and this isnt possible at every star. It would be nice if someone could help him during the last part of his journey to Beagle Point. Although he could make it without help he does not want to risk to lose anymore hull integrity by attempting planetary landings he does not need to do. His Hull is currently at 14%

I notice people are asking if he has a mining laser, can they mine material to repair hull damage? Is there something I don't know?

There is no way of repairing hull damage in the field but you can mine the materials for FSD injection from asteroids/planetary rings (except Yttrium and Polonium). You only need a mining laser as materials sometimes appear alongside a mined fragment, so it can save you from the need to make planetary landings, or allow you to restock if you run out in a system without landable planets but with asteroids or rings. Day 19. 31. December 3302

Today Tom did stay in the HYPUAE BRIAE AA-A H268 Nebula to meet 2 CMDR's

First he meet CMDR Guy De Lombard...

...together they explored a nearby neutron star...

...afterwards they travelled to a nearby system to search for some resources...

...the system was surprisingly beautiful...

...after a short search they found a moon with the resources they were looking for...

Sam was quite happy that he could drive around again...

...he even met another SRV!

Together they drove around to look for some resources...

...after some time they both did head back to their ships.

Guy De Lombard said that he saw a ELW with rings on his way to meet Tom...

...the planet reminded Tom how beautiful it can be to take some time and look at the planets you fly by...

...after Guy De Lombard showed Tom the planet he said goodbye and went his way.

Then Tom did wait for CMDR Tootiny...

...he did wait quite a bit...

...but after some time CMDR Tootiny did arrive.

CMDR Tootiny travelled a long distance just to meet Tom...

...more than 6700 lightyears in just a single day.

CMDR Tootiny has been out there for about a year exploring system over system over system and Tom is the first ship he met in a long time.

Tom was surprised that CMDR Tootiny has been exploring for so long and was grateful -as well as surprised- that he put so much effort into getting to him just to meet him. And that made him think again about the question: does his journey end at Beagle Point?
