Bored of the game already

also feeling like this is a bit empty

I'm also feeling like what we've got here is a great foundation, it just needs to get fleshed out for the multiplayer aspects and overall content. The game plays beautifully, I really enjoy actually being able to fly my ship. Just that it feels like I'm playing a solo-player experience and there's not a wide variety of things to do. I had un-subbed from Eve a few months ago and was taking a break from that, looking to get into ED and perhaps SC. But a couple days into launch I'm already thinking about re-subbing my Eve account while ED gets fleshed out and play a bit of both. Guess I was kinda wanting to have my cake and eat it too, as I've never really cared for Eve's passive point-&-click ship control experience, but I really have enjoyed many of the other aspects of that game, having played it since 2003. That said, I really do believe there's a lot of great content ahead for ED and looking forward to seeing what gets added on over time. Or if the game was just intended to be a modern revision of the original classic, then by all means they've smashed it out of the park on that scale.

There's one more point I would like to, well, point out.
There's a reason why people grind things. I'm sure everyone has their own reasons, here are mine.

I want to explore whatever interesting places I find. Recently, I discovered neutron star by just browsing galaxy map.
There's a catch though. To get there, I would have to have the best, Class A frameshift drive as distances between stars in that region are very high, and stars are scarce.
I can't get decent enough cash from regular exploration. I really don't want to spend 5 days non-stop trading to get that damn Cobra (let alone ASP I really can't afford atm) fitted with some more-or-less decent modules. If we're supposed to have unlimited possibilities, then high prices on some modules are getting in the way, making grind for credits sad necessity. That's where the problem is. People want to grind fast to a better hauling ship cause they don't want to spend two weeks to get these necessary items and venture out the way they want. There is a high dissonance between playing the way you want, and having to save money to be able to play the way you want. That's where grinding is born.

Despite that, I love this game. I know when I'm done working today I'll be back at home grinding that damn money again because that's how much I love exploration. I don't want to play sad trader, but I'll have to if I want to get back to exploring the way it should be, with ADS on-board. If only it could be a bit cheaper though...

I have to agree with flip fuzz. I've been playing off and on since July through Beta, Gamma and now 1.04. I really want to like this game but I just cant get into it. One planet or station is the same as the rest, only the names change. It will be your standard MMO grind except without any players. 400,000,000,000 systems, really? Why? If there are 40000 players on the server you have a 1 in a 1,000,000 chance of seeing anything other than a NPC. I am really looking forward to Star Citizen, I believe they have the proper formula for a immersive gaming experience. I would rather have 400 unique hand crafted systems with individual characteristics than 400,000,000,000 generic stations floating around a planet. As far as immersion goes there is none here. Your not a individual pilot that can get out of the ship and experience the game nor are you a ship that you can look at and admire after you long grind to upgrade. Where are the external views!!! I've been posting on that topic since July and it has fallen on deaf ears at Frontier. I will take the advice of another player and just delete this game and re explore it maybe in 6 months to see if there is anything new and interesting added. disappointed I bought into this game so early, could have saved $150....

Let me try - what ED currently lacks is causality, a sense that there is a logic behind what your seeing and sense that your actions have some small impact on that logic. People were giving examples in another thread of NPCs carrying random cargo that isnt being bought or sold at the local station, of following PNCs that never dock in any stations, of being able to kill countless pirate or trader NPCs without any local market impact and various other anomalies.

As for "lacking imagination" - are we supposed to imagine that NPCs are carrying appropriate cargo when they clearly arnt, are we supposed to imagine that NPCs dock when they travel between systems when clearly do not ?, are we supposed to imagine that we are helping local markets to keep flowing by taking on pirates when it has no effect on supply levels ?.

Obviously some people are content to essentially be pure observers in the game, wandering about fighting/trading/mining/exploring etc with no concern as to whether what they are doing has any effect and thats fine. But there are those of us who notice and are bothered by these anomalies and lack of causality. Its not that we want to be lead by the nose or hand held, we just need the interaction with the game world to be a two way thing rather than just one way.

I would just like to add - for the many players who *love* "working stuff out" - that that means solving problems and puzzles in-game. Discovering new stuff and finding hidden places...

It does NOT mean inventing a reason why you lose reputation when you should be gaining or pretending that the trade system is working as intended. And most of all, it does NOT mean spending days trying to solve a puzzle or obtain an item - only to discover that it isn't actually in the game yet - but Frontier hadn't told anyone...

Simple answer is: stop grind and start playing :) Enjoy the galaxy, the exploration, read the information about different factions, look at political interconnections, try to find yourself a nice home base, set custom goals - visit the Earth, go to Polaris etc. Slow down and take a closer look at what's happening around you :)

Great advice :)

If it weren't for the fact that right now I am afraid to do *anything* except simple "buy-cheap-sell-dear" trading and a few of the non-bugged fetch quests because I really, REALLY don't want turn Hostile to every faction again for no apparent reason...

QE

PS I did buy into the Beta based on the DDAs. I was disappointed. I am playing the game. I haven't given up yet. I would love for E : D to be a huge success... :p

Elite being a "sandbox" shouldn't come as an excuse for it's lack of content / depth.

Anyway as others said the game has great foundation, Frontier themself said the release is mostly only the core of the game. I am sure that in 6 month we should have more interesting stuff to do.

oh god can we have just a whole sub forum for these kinda threads, its gettin reeaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ollllllllllllllllldddddddddddddddddddddd

Elite Dangerous is not a game for people who like to be told what to do, go here do this, shoot that. It requires imagination, and is really meant for those type of people who like to micro manage to the nth degree, and for those of us who like making lists. If you want to save the universe then this game is not for you. There will be additional content but this may be a long way off such as planetary landings.

Has nothing to do with imagination. Can I imagine I'm fighting invisible aliens? Can I imagine I just discovered a unique new planet with comets and asteroids all over the place? No.. you NEED that stuff in the game to interact with.

This isn't a game for people right now. Its a game for stamp collectors and OCD people who like doing the same things over and over and having one minor thing happen that is different and that gets them excited like doing the same trade run 100 times ... and then "ooooh I made an extra 20 credits that run... how exciting!"

Those sorts of people will get off on this game. The majority of the population will not.

Why can't we form squad ? why can't we own/buy/build stations ? why can we form military force ? why can't we explicity join a faction and wage war ?

We are not in 1980s were technology wasn't there to implements all those feature but now that we can, it just feels lazy not to add them. This game feels like a barebone of a space sims - and it does a really good job at it. But interaction with the world is close to 0.

I am trying to love the game as much as I can ( I am still having fun for now ... ) but it feels like a dumb down version of an X-series game. I don't care how frontier was back in the day. If today we have games that offer the same feature with more to it, there is no reason why ED should not.

The 'Basic' game is here...additional content will be added as time goes on.
But if your not a space sim fan then ur screwed.

I love all these "use your imagination and stop grinding and start playing" comments. Offcourse I would do something else if the game would allow me to, but the game doesn't let me do anything yet. I just can't get excited enough from looking at unseen planets anymore since participating in the alpha and the beta of the game.

You can set your own goals in the game, but it is like saying that just stop playing the game and start building your own lego space station and use your imagination.

Not if you enjoy slow and peaceful flying around admiring the planets, stars and other astronomical objects ;)

It's all about the attitude.

I do.. but there is no technology in our ship to even tell us anything about what we are looking at unless we go outside the cockpit to get some basic data about it.

Some of us like a lot of information. I want to see telemetry and scan the surface for detailed and interesting stuff. It needs a cockpit interface that allow you to scan and probe the surface of objects to bring out its unique makeup and features that would make it interested.

Otherwise .. its just a flying art gallery.

Like Mass Effect 2's planet probing? :)
I would like that, or something more-or-less like that.

The thing is fishing is also doing much the same each time.

Even a regular walk down a familiar country lane same each time.

Lots of things are same each time, but one can enjoy it all the same.

Same with any game, easy to burn yourself out doing the same ol' same every day. Like it was back in the day.. it's an open ended choose your own adventure story, make it your own. Don't get caught up in the never ending grind for a 'status' or the latest and greatest ship. Some of the best fun I've had is during Beta around the war zones dog fighting in a cheap stock Eagle... tonnes of fun. Take a break, spend time with the family, wrap those xmas pressies, walk the dog... then come back and play a bit. Don't over do it! :D
