Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club Presents: Prison Brake (07.08.3303 - 13.08.3303)

What is it with you and breaking the law Aken?! :p

Intent to Crash and Burn and Break and not Brake

Already died twice on the course tonight, once from extreme lithobraking, another time from impatience. I might've downsized my fuel tank a bit much, and was unwilling to use economic mode to limp back. :p

Also, I'm really looking forward to the landing on Mitterand Hollow videos. Is it possible to land without crashing into the "too fast for supercruise" barrier?

Yes. :)

edit: I'll get an educational clip uploaded

First run submitted. I'm not especially happy with it (1 interdiction, 1 obscured jump and the route plotter is refusing to give me Epsilon to Atagat in 1 jump even tho' I can definitely make it) but it'll do for starters. This is challenging! I like it.

I'm not going to comment on Alec's monstrosity

WHAT?!?!? How dare you, this is the most beautiful ship I've ever owned! :D

So anyway, on the subject of Mitterand Hollow, since Ozric*1 has accused me of "getting this out at every opportunity", I may as well just "get this out".

*1 he's just jealous 'cos I beat him to it on the tourist destination thread (where's my damn tourist beacon Mr Brookes? it's a hollow*2 victory without it). :p

*2 no pun intended

So after I cut this together, I realized that the question Bruski asked is not addressed directly, but it's still demonstrated. Try not to fly directly at Mitterand Hollow, try to cut across its path such that you're moving perpendicular to its zone of influence. When your ship transfers from the planet zone to the moon's, you'll be scooped up and carried along (relatively speaking), even if you end up around its back side.

Cmdr Polly made her debut run in the grisly-named Eagle Blóðugr Örn, safely completing a full run of the three penal colonies in a respectable 19:40 and therefore being the first pilot to get under the 20 minutes barrier in the Eagle Regular. Her record didn't last long though, since cmdr Stern Winter reclaimed again the first place a few hours later, improving his first run by more than 3 minutes!

Impressive flying Stern! o7
Looks like I have to try harder.

For the renewed joy of Jhyrryl :p, there's a new update to the Open Unlimited leaderboard:

Buckyball veteran cmdr Alec Turner enters the competition in his veteran Courier The Sans Serif, but an untimely interdiction from a pirate, undoubtedly moved only by interest in the details of The Sans Serif's smashing paintjob, ended up in cmdr Alec queuing up behind Jak and ZX Spectrum. A friendly advice from race direction: you have to be in front of others, not behind, to let them bask in your purple magnificence!

Ahhh, you see my thinking was that if I let them get there first then they'd be docked at the finish line and would be in a prime position to gaze in wonder at the Teal and Grape magnificence of my ship as it glides in through the mailslot. I see the error of my ways now and will correct this situation forthwith.

P.S. waddya reckon Ashnak, shall I?

An iPhone?

No way. Sure, they may have some good marketing, but as a phone.... at work, I'm getting more error tickets for iPhones than for all other phones together.

But if you don't win this race, I'll suggest you switch over to a different vehicle:

I had to manually plot the longest jump in Armed and Dangerous because the route plotter wouldn't take me there in one jump.

Selecting the system, rather than plotting a route to it, in the galmap gets around the problem - it just wastes a few seconds selecting your destination the old way when you arrive.

One more piece of landing advice...
...avoid the ships that are always taking off when you arrive.

Judging from the feedback of these first days of racing, seeing the finish line is a small victory in itself. It's Buckyball, everyone (surviving) wins! :)

The course is great! I've finished building my ship after an unsettling setback. A thunderstorm killed power to my house while flying (in VR) to pick up the last few modules. But I was able to enjoy a scouting run of the course.

This led me to an interesting discovery: my FSD range doesn't quite allow the longest required jump for this race when the iCourier standard class 3 fuel tank is full, but with a class 2 fitted I was just short on remaining fuel to make the final jump (by less than .5LY!) so I have configured an auxiliary class 1 tank in the optional internals for the ideal balance. This is why racing keeps me coming back to the game!

Hope to make some competitive runs tomorrow; look forward to seeing everyone whizzing by from the cockpit of Velox Vindex.

For my Adder to run the course in single jumps, I have to use the Advanced Maintenance option to refuel 10% at a time. Ideally I need to be between 89% and 95% full, but 100% will weigh me down too much to get from Atagat to Epsilon Indi during the 3rd leg. And as Alec noted for his runs, I also have to manually select Epsilon Indi, not use routing.

It's definitely a well-designed course, Aken. :)
