And only 1 rebuy so far - I'm obviously not trying hard enough.

Managed to catch Cmdr Jak coming in through the mailslot (apologies for the poor camera work).

For my Adder to run the course in single jumps, I have to use the Advanced Maintenance option to refuel 10% at a time. Ideally I need to be between 89% and 95% full, but 100% will weigh me down too much to get from Atagat to Epsilon Indi during the 3rd leg.
This is no longer true. :) I engineered a 2D power plant to swap with the 1A to reduce mass; and I also engineered the shields to reduce mass, so now I can fuel up without worry.

Additionally I got the tier 5 Dirties, adding 37m/s to top speed and 53m/s to boost. :) With the new speed, I finally had my first rebuy from harsh landings (3rd total rebuy, with the other two being the ship collision posted previously, and a station wall collision while exiting to get a better launch pad ). So I'm not sure much more raw speed is useful in this race, considering the almost raw luck factor of a good insertion into Mitterland Hollow orbit, and the importance of dropping out of Orbital Cruise at the right angle/distance.

Yeah, I'm seriously doubting the veracity of dirty drive engineered enhanced performance thrusters for this race (although I do still have mine at present). OK, so I can escape start station mass lock fast, but my prison landings basically consist of: exit glide, wait for speed to drop below 1000, boost, regret boost, brake, Brake, BRAKE!!! Bang! And my finish landing is typically: exit SC, boost, request docking, what pad? Oh crap!! too late to re-request, gear down, brake, Brake, BRAKE, overshoot.

Prison BRAKE appears to be well named.

Oh, and for the sake of my incoming time today I refute that the Mitterand insertion is luck ... it's pure unadulterated skill man!

I'm not sure you've done this enough times yet. :) The luck isn't associated with the actual moment of insertion; that is skill...the luck is all about where Mitterand Hollow is in its orbit when you come around from your gravity brake. That's easily +/- 45 seconds.

You have just described, point for point, my first approaches at a speed run of my own course. Now you get why I settled with Prison Brake instead of the other candidates "Escape Velocity" (my 2nd favourite), "Shoot For The Moon" and "The Jail Trail". :)

About the Mitterand Hollow orbital insertion...it's a case of "lucky" being "skilled, just not everytime" :p....

Boards update coming soon(ish).

Not convinced - my current approach is to come in tangential to the orbital plane so I can spot Mitterand's direction of rotation, calculate a suitable intersection point between my own path and the planet's orbit line and then head straight towards that (looping at the last minute to match velocity with the planet and avoid face planting into it).

Please excuse the crudity of this model ...

Timing seems pretty consistent on each occasion.

I am eager to see. :) Maybe we can do a side-by-side video.

Someone here severely overestimated the braking capabilities of his/her space vessel:

Also, hearing the audio background of Bruski running around the track in the Eagle Regular for some reason reminded me of some very fun, old times:

Updates from race day #4:

A single new entry in the Eagle Regular class, with cmdr Bruski placing himself straight into second place in his Sparkling Cinder, with just an interdiction attempt keeping him away from a potential preliminary first position.

Things started heating in the Open Unlimited class: cmdr Bruski opened the day with a remarkable 16:40 in his signature Courier Varangian Lightning, only to be surpassed a while later by Alec Turner's Sans Serif with a much improved 15:54, only to be surpassed again by Jak's Enigma Shuttle with a much more improved 15:21! The relentless pad sledgehammering appears to be paying off!

Really love the look of these scoreboards Aken, nice job! As for Cmdr Jak and his 33 second lead ... curse you and your lucky Mitterand Hollow insertion! :p

Seriously tho', I've just been playing around with using ffmpeg to create split screen videos. I'm pretty sure I've got it sussed now. If you can upload your run to YouTube and let me have the URL then I should be able to rip it back down again over here and split screen it with my own to create a side-by-side comparison video.

Here's my first run -- not very fast, but I did complete the course :)

I had problems at the first landing, forgetting to extend my landing gear! This cost me enough time that I got a bounty and was attacked. And then there was Mitterand Hollow. I missed the initial approach by "this much" (I thought I had it but...nooo)! Then I positioned myself to catch it as it came around the planet again -- only to be a little TOO much in the path. Crashed into the moon, and lost time waiting for the FSD cooldown. Sigh.

It's a very exciting course to run, though. Very enjoyable.

I'm out of time for now, so I'll go ahead and submit this one. At least I can get onto the board!

At 26:55 I might have to rename my ship "Molasses." Not that it's the ship's fault -- the Courier is a brilliant machine. :D

Managed to finish my Keelback run too. Certainly nothing award-winning, but I did manage to avoid so much as a fine and it only took my two tries to catch Mitterand. (First time I've visited).

Mitterand Hollow is seriously bogus. I think I'm one of the few who dislike it and wish it was "fixed." :)

Hopefully my writeup for the tourist destination thread had you covered. That was certainly my intention as I was aware that many people disapproved (i.e. you're not alone, although I personally quite like it). Too bad FD never added the beacon (you hear me over there Michael? I'm not letting this one go!).

Located in the Epsilon Indi system, Mitterand Hollow is one of the true wonders of the galaxy and an absolute "must see" for any budding tourist. It's a landable rocky world with an Earth relative gravity of 0.09G and a composition of 80% rock 20% metal, however what sets it apart from any other known planetary body is the fact that it orbits its parent water world of New Africa once every 80 seconds. Just landing on Mitterand Hollow is a challenge in itself and a real thrill ride for pilot and passenger alike. Indeed, its ferocious orbital speed has led to it being called "the moon that lands on you". Once safely on the surface the endless cycle of alternating night and day while the awe inspiring body of New Africa rolls majestically across the sky is something few will ever forget.

Whether you consider it to be an insult to the laws of physics, a freak of nature or final proof of the existence of god, Mitterand Hollow is unquestionably somewhere to be seen, even if it cannot be fully comprehended.

I'm still hoping to make a run or two in this, but my wife has had a bit of a bad time this week, so I might end up missing out - especially as the event is difficult to survive.

I'm probably going to switch to The Nomad if I enter as with only a couple of runs I'm likely to more competitive with a ship I'm familiar with than a really fast ship. :)
