Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club presents: Seven Sisters Speedway. 13-Jul-3305 to 21-Jul-3305

Well, looks like zero weekend racing for me. Can't complain I suppose, it's been a nice weekend, but it's a shame because I'd shaved a jump off my route so theoretically a minute off my time. Oh, well .. good luck to everyone still going!
Out of curiosity I made two unofficial attempts at beating my unlimited DBX time this morning ... both hyperdicted. Given up now and moved on to "other things". Terrific race @Raiko, thanks so much for organising this, was great to be back Buckyball Racing again ... it's been too long!

Congrat's to everyone who took part, loved following the thread as ever and some terrific video clips (which I've only just caught up on). Gonna post my Kamikaze run as a video soon(ish).

And yay - I learned something new (again) - you can tell you're gonna get hyperdicted almost the instant you enter the hyperspace tunnel because the tiny dot of the target star slowly grows and shrinks.

(race analysis to come tomorrow, but TLDR it was amazingly fun and intense and optimizable! :D )

Most fun DBX Run (3 seconds off my best, but with delightful TinyDragon commentary):

Most fun iCourier Kamikaze run

My best iCourier Kamikaze Run, with tinypingu cuteness and blanket hiding.

My best DBX Run 28:29, chill late night, Music by Public Service Broadcasting

Congrats to all who raced, and thanks Raiko for putting it together!

Despite my goofs, I had a great time and enjoyed flying the course. It was quite memorable and interesting, and as usual I learned a few things.

Fun stuff!

When's the next one? :p

PS Bruski can multitask like crazy!

Here are the provisional final standings. I'm at work, so I've not had chance to scrutinise evidence too closely. And my summary will need to wait for the final update tonight.

Thanks to everyone who joined in and raced. :)

@Stinja, apologies but unfortunately the hyperdiction bonus only applies to Kamikaze runs. :(
If you've got any screenshots/video of your speed inside the stations I can give you a full kamikaze bonus - alternately I can submit your last run as to the Kamikaze Cup using just your tunnel speed & the LP if it included the message. Obviously your run is only valid for the cup if you didn't repair.

Sadly, many inconvenient events in RL keep me from participate (Like being sent to an apartment where the hot water got broken, and as I'm no longer BoyScout then sent to a hotel then to another hotel in another city.... crappy network, etc... everything condimented with lots of work).
The forum thread was good fun reading in the meantime!
Congrats to all the Cmdrs that improved their skills!! and the usual suspects that got the better times!!

Congratulations to @AkenBosch, @Darplata94 and @Bruski! (provisionally).

As you may or may not be aware there are prizes for the winners here, basically some community paintpacks I won at Lavecon which I already owned (which is why I didn't try to win any of these categories, yeah, that's DEFINITELY the reason!).

Anyway, I'll chat to @Raiko about the distribution of these and get back to you.

In the meantime, here's my (carefully timed so as not to win - yeah, that's DEFINITELY what happened here) Kamikaze Krait run (hurriedly thrown together with some music) for your viewing pleasure.

But 40 minutes is plenty of time for an Hauler run! 😅
It should have been. It wasn't, because I was still in the process of running my final Kamikaze run, so the Hauler run started before midnight but extended well beyond. And then the game froze (and my PC aswell) and I couldn't start another attempt. But I guess that's my fault for relying on last minute attempts; those usually end either in explosions or slower times anyways.

But even the real Kamikaze runs (I mean those ending in a rebuy screen) were loads of fun. I mean: What could go wrong with boosting into a station with G5DD Thrusters? Surprisingly little if you add (surprisingly weak) shields. I guess the Courier is pretty much the ideal ship for this due to the strong shields and also easily optimizable for top speed while still having good jump range due to it's low weight (as compared to the Viper which requires big compromises). Also the long nose makes for an excellent crumple zone. :D
When I saw the numbers for the Kamikaze time bonus I quickly realized speed was key - and then shuddered at the thought what Bruski would make out of this - rightly so, it turns out.
The Hauler Class in comparison was pretty straightforward, although the different SC approaches made for some nice variation and quite a few of them were difficult to get just right. There were also many opportunities for error, from the classic station overshoot to pesky planetary rings in the way. The two locations in Pleione were also an interesting problem: supercruise between them or jump out and back in? I didn't do detailed testing, but it appeared to save around 15 seconds to jump out directly from Squirrels Nest to another waypoint (in my case Obsidian Orbital in Maia) and then jump back to Pleione for Stargazer. In the end I didn't manage to nail all approaches in one single run, although I was very lucky that all of my (few) attempts were uninterrupted by hyper- or interdictions.
For those who might be interested, the videos of my Hauler and Courier Kamikaze runs are here and here.

Thanks again to Raiko for setting up this race and kudos for the interesting race course and creative shenanigans! I had completely forgotten how much I've missed racing in the past few months and I hope I'll be participating more frequently in the future again.
Congrats to Darplata, Aken and Bruski; but really to anyone who took part! It's always cool to see how the fastest times on the board improve over the course of a race. At first, some numbers might feel impossible to reach, and at the end of the week there are multiple racers within seconds of each other, always trying to squeeze another few fractions of a minute out of their ships. But it's also great to see how everybody is improving their own personal time. Because how many people have already written: It doesn't have to be the top of the leaderboard, because everybody is a better pilot at the end. And racing a Type 10 can be just as much fun as trying to set a new overall record with whatever seems to be the optimal ship for the job. That comes down to planning, preparation and a good deal of experience and practice. And always a bit of luck to avoid being noticed by insectoid racing fans... :alien:

Glad someone did at least a tiny amount of maths! I too did Pleione as two separate visits but had little basis for that other than a vague hunch. And pretty much second all of this otherwise - terrific race, really good planetary braking opportunities (and also lack thereof) - getting an 0:02 approach into Ohm to slow at just the right moment was a joy when it worked ... man the pull of that planet! And as for Kamikaze, such a simple principle really but it worked so well! Awesome job @Raiko !

Many thanks to Raiko for staging this event and congratulations to Darplata94, Bruski and Aken B. for your winning runs and well done to everyone who took part!

This was a really good race to come back to after a long time without racing (and, personally, a long time out on the Rim chasing vague Raxxla hints). There was such a variety of skills required that it helped me to make a start on re-aquiring my race legs. The hyperdictions were an extra random element but I think that was just because of the behaviour to do with the in-game story this week. I've been to and from the Pleiades enough to know that it was previously unusual-ish to be hyperdicted even once and I was never stopped twice before. I've shot down plenty of scouts and one interceptor, so I might have a bit of a target on my back (though my DBS should not). I was not feeling very energetic as it's been a bit busy for me this week and I only completed one run after the time I posted, which was not an improvement.

I changed the ID of the Head in the Clouds to KyoAni before racing and I think I'll leave it that way, as a show of support.

Looking forward to the next one!

And that’s the kind of “out of the box” thinking I really should get better at. Now that you’ve said it, it seems blindingly obvious. I’m a little bit too “by the book”, unfortunately. At least I remembered to check the range from the start/finish to all seven sisters to see if I could shave off an extra jump or two. :)

Thank you, @Raiko, for hosting this race. Congrats to everyone who participated. I was really hoping for a fourth run, but I got stopped by a train on the way home, so I missed being able to squeeze in a run by 5 minutes. :(

I'm curious if anyone actually analysed the best way to do this?

When I picked the course, I assumed that it would probably be quickest to visit Pleione twice, as @cookiehole and one or two others did. However I'm curious whether Stargazer first and then Squirrel's Nest might have been good. Stargazer is the farthest out of the waypoints, so probably not, but I'm curious because the very low gravity well should mean that you reach a high SC speed quickly flying away from Stargazer.

I also may have gotten distracted racing the Condor around at the listening post,
And around Squirrel's Nest.
Yes, "Best tour of Squirrel's Nest" will definitely get a special mention. ;)

Odd, it seems counterintuitive to me for a jump out and back in to be faster than SCing from one location to the next.

In anycase, as my position at the bottom of the leaderboard indicates, maybey I'm not the best person to listen to.

Thanks for the interesting race, I had a blast, and have a new favorite place to go fast (Squirel's Nest space bar).

So the deal is that separating the two Pleione waypoints by adding one more stop to your galactic route (i.e. jump to Pleione, do Squirrels Nest, jump to one of the other waypoints, do that, jump back to Pleione, do Stargazer, continue as normal) will add 1 jump (~50 seconds) + 1 SC from star to waypoint (maybe 40 seconds?) to your time so if the SC from Squirrels Nest takes much longer than a minute and a half then you're better off doing it as two separate jumps.

I think more often than not when we have races with two waypoints in the same system it's well worth considering jumping somewhere else and then back in again, especially if there's another waypoint you can visit in between which is only one jump away.

Thanks so much Raiko for organising the race, I had a great time tearing around the Pleiades again. Things certainly got harder as the week went on, and now having seen the final times of Cookie and Aken in the regulation class I'm even more gutted I didn't get the chance to have another couple of attempts yesterday, as they were definitely in reach.

Congrats to everyone who took part, and to the 3 winners. There's been some amusing stories, some funny and crazy videos, and lots of good chat.

Feels good to be back!

p.s I didn't jump out of the Pleione and back in, but that probably would have helped even more 😅

So one of the two 'hip hop' stops would have been perfect.

Shame I just shipped my courier halfway across the bubble or I'd be tempted to test it out.

ATTENTION: before everyone wonders off can I just mention that the next race will be towards the end of August and will be called "Hot Off The Press". Unusually the first details about the race won't be published here on the forum but in a separate publication 😮 (although I will be giving a heads up here about where to keep an eye out for them, and when, closer to the time) ... and also, the race won't be prescribing a fixed set of waypoints 😵 but will require you to do some research prior to launch 😱 (so the quicker you get your hands on the aforementioned publication the more time you'll have to prepare!) That's right folks, I'm gonna be making you do some work for this one! (I think it'll be worth it tho).
