Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club presents: Seven Sisters Speedway. 13-Jul-3305 to 21-Jul-3305

I'm curious if anyone actually analysed the best way to do this?

When I picked the course, I assumed that it would probably be quickest to visit Pleione twice, as @cookiehole and one or two others did. However I'm curious whether Stargazer first and then Squirrel's Nest might have been good. Stargazer is the farthest out of the waypoints, so probably not, but I'm curious because the very low gravity well should mean that you reach a high SC speed quickly flying away from Stargazer.

Yes, "Best tour of Squirrel's Nest" will definitely get a special mention. ;)
Dam that just never occured to me...wont happen again though lolol...........great race either way.

ATTENTION: before everyone wonders off can I just mention that the next race will be towards the end of August and will be called "Hot Off The Press". Unusually the first details about the race won't be published here on the forum but in a separate publication 😮 (although I will be giving a heads up here about where to keep an eye out for them, and when, closer to the time) ... and also, the race won't be prescribing a fixed set of waypoints 😵 but will require you to do some research prior to launch 😱 (so the quicker you get your hands on the aforementioned publication the more time you'll have to prepare!) That's right folks, I'm gonna be making you do some work for this one! (I think it'll be worth it tho).

Well, that's certainly one way to make sure that they publicise your race.:cool:
It sounds cool though.

Hah! I generally have more free time away from home than I do at home... “free time” being defined as time I can dedicate my whole attention to something. Needing to do a little research first will make certainly make things interesting. :D

@Stinja, apologies but unfortunately the hyperdiction bonus only applies to Kamikaze runs. :(
If you've got any screenshots/video of your speed inside the stations I can give you a full kamikaze bonus
Doh brain failure, It was pretty late! Submitted some times, not that it's help much, I should of gone for the driving Miss Daisy bonus ;)

The two locations in Pleione were also an interesting problem: supercruise between them or jump out and back in?
I considered it, but just SC between in the limited runs I did. For me jumping would seem there's the additional time to re-select your destination, and opening the gal-map on console can be slow (and we don't have Voice Attack, or other hacky macros, just old fashioned muscle memory); get correct alignment (potential seconds lost); and then enter and SC to Squirrel from the star's gravity well.
If you SC from Stargazer you exit a small well, and after the 50+ seconds (and as above it'd be more than 50, unlike the a-b-c-d 50s scenario) you are already going at some speed, and increasing C rapidly.

Didn't test properly, but from a video replay seemed not much in it, and more chilled just SCing - so I went with that ;p I'd trust people at the top end of the board than myself obviously.

I guess the Courier is pretty much the ideal ship for this due to the strong shields and also easily optimizable for top speed while still having good jump range due to it's low weight (as compared to the Viper which requires big compromises). Also the long nose makes for an excellent crumple zone. :D

Can confirm on the Viper compromises, I knew from the start that I had no chance against the Courier guys, faster speed, higher jump range. The only real advantage the Viper has over the Courier is the hugely lower gear deploying time when speed docking, something that was all but useless in this specific circumstance...plenty of time to deploy the landing gear while waiting for the ship to recovery from a spin after a 800->0 m/s deceleration. 😅

The Hauler Class in comparison was pretty straightforward, although the different SC approaches made for some nice variation and quite a few of them were difficult to get just right. There were also many opportunities for error, from the classic station overshoot to pesky planetary rings in the way. The two locations in Pleione were also an interesting problem: supercruise between them or jump out and back in? I didn't do detailed testing, but it appeared to save around 15 seconds to jump out directly from Squirrels Nest to another waypoint (in my case Obsidian Orbital in Maia) and then jump back to Pleione for Stargazer. In the end I didn't manage to nail all approaches in one single run, although I was very lucky that all of my (few) attempts were uninterrupted by hyper- or interdictions.

As usual, everything as the boss said. The docking at Stargazer was quite the PITA for me.

Thanks so much Raiko for organising the race, I had a great time tearing around the Pleiades again. Things certainly got harder as the week went on, and now having seen the final times of Cookie and Aken in the regulation class I'm even more gutted I didn't get the chance to have another couple of attempts yesterday, as they were definitely in reach.

If it can be of any consolation (spoiler: it probably won't :D), that from me was almost a last minute attempt to gain the top spot...I knew I had the performance, the previous attempt was overall even better as I nailed most of the dockings and grav-brakings...only to completely bork the last approach at Ohm Horizons, doing a slow speed loop of shame, then missing anyway the drop into normal space, than having to SC again for the last 50 km. Lo and behold, that ended in a 38:03, right at your side! (but a place behind on the board I suppose)

Hang on I`m stupid...

Ah! He thinks he's stupid! Hold my beer kid, you ain't seen anything yet!
If you're thinking "do'h dumb me, I never realized I could be faster by jumping away from Pleione and back instead of going SC", consider that I realized that even before the start of the race...then it took me the best part of a week to realize that jumping to Atlas, then to Stargazer, then again to Atlas and back to Squirrel's, wasn't exactly the most clever way of doing things. That's Aken for you.

For me jumping would seem there's the additional time to re-select your destination, and opening the gal-map on console can be slow (and we don't have Voice Attack, or other hacky macros, just old fashioned muscle memory); get correct alignment (potential seconds lost);

I can imagine you're right on the galmap selecting stuff, gamepad loses over mouse there for sure, as for correct alignment though, that should be no problem; plenty of time to align the target dot in the small crosshair to the left of the radar while the FSD is spooling up.

SE7EN SISTERS SPEEDWAY - FINAL STANDINGS - THANKS FOR RACING!

Open Unlimited Class

There were fresh runs on the final day at both ends of the table in Open Unlimited Class. CMDRs Terrorsidic and Stinja embraced the Buckyball spirit by running their regular ED ships. Stinja raced his fuel rat Cobra Mk III Nominal Sanity, complete with limpets and controller.

Meanwhile Terrorsidic flew his multirole Anaconda MultiConda, dropping his SRV hangar, but keeping his ship launched fighters for faster fly-pasts / throughs. CMDR Terrorsidic did get a little carried away with his SLFs, particularly at the Squirrel's Nest space bar, where he treated Buckyball fans to a spectacular tour of the entire installation.

At the top of the table, both CMDRs Darplata94 and Bruski made improved runs in their DBXs to cement their 1st and 2nd positions, while CMDR Aken B. narrowly missed out on snatching the final podium position from CMDR Alec Turner. Aken nonetheless secured the fastest run that didn't rely on guardian FSD-boosting technology with his 4th place finish.

Regulation Hauler Class

In Regulation Hauler class, a late run by CMDR Aken B. in Subaru Baracca snatched 1st place from CMDR Cookiehole with an excellent time of 36:30. CMDR Darplata94 held on to third place to complete the podium places.

CMDR MrMike's Hauler Slow Ride, proved to be poorly named, breaking the 45 minute barrier and finishing less than a Hauler length ahead of an improved run by CMDR Beth Johanson in Haulin' Arx.

Nuk's Kamikaze Cup

To the surprise of absolutely no one at all CMDR Bruski and his space-bear cub co-pilots pushed their time bonus beyond the limits of sanity - who knew that iCourier shields were that good? - securing first place in the Kamikaze Cup with a staggering time bonus of 69:54. The space bears entered every station at above 870m/s, and only a pedestrian 854m/s transit of the second tunnel at Squirrel's Nest prevented a 70 minute+ bonus being achieved. Little Nuk was delighted!

CMDR Cookiehole knew that it would take something special to catch Bruski, especially without an FSD-booster, and while he didn't overtake the bears he did break the minus 30 minute barrier thanks to an excellent time bonus of 64:17 and a 33:47 run.

In 3rd Place was CMDR Aken B. finishing amongst the iCouriers in his non-boosted Viper Mk III Spirit of Shenanigan.

Other kamikaze runs on the final day were CMDR Terrorsidic with his Conda and SLF combo, CMDR Beth Johanson in her regulation hauler Haulin' Arx, and also CMDR Stinja.

Stinja's final Regulation Hauler run was ruined by two Hyperdictions by some of the overenthusiastic Thargoid Buckyball fans, who flocked to the Pleiades as soon as they heard that the BRC were back. Undaunted, CMDR Stinja greeted the xeno racing fans enthusiastically and claimed a nice 4 minute hyperdiction bonus in the Cup.

Brilliant, and thanks again to @Raiko for a terrific Buckyball Race. I'll be contacting the winners shortly about their prize packs.

So I'm exactly the middle ranking in both open unlimited AND kamikaze, LOL!
Also just ONE SECOND faster than cookiehole, that was... a close one :D
All in all: Not great, not terrible :p
Curious for the next one, will probably do that in either two different ships then or just a different ship in general.

All in all: Not great, not terrible :p

Remember, you have raced in an Orca. Not great, not terrible: "luxurious", luxurious is the word.

Also @cookiehole , I'm very sorry that your pc froze while you were trying a last Hauler run, sometimes one can really be out of luck, what a shame....carefully stores away a batch of newly devised Akenbots in their shielded case
(sorry for real though, I've almost no doubt that was the only thing that saved my place on the board!)

Congratulations to him, Bruski, Darplata (the guy is fast and keeps confirming it!) and Alec Turner for the podium positions, but really to just about anyone, the old familiar faces and the new ones who just tried Buckyballing for the first time.

@Raiko , not enough words to thank you for the race, it was fun, it was technical, it was somewhat complex but not unnecessarily complicated, it had a new totally bonkers concept. A Buckyball event at its best. I rate it 9/10 on the "Bruski's Min-Maxing Shenanigan" scale. :D

Speaking of ship names, I just can't stop giggling to myself reading that "Subaru Baracca" name on top of the leaderboard...sadly no one would get the joke around these parts, that is the name of a "fictional car" from an extremely famous sketch of an Italian comic trio, and roughly translates as "Subaru Junk". And no doubt it is:

WeeScratchyIndianelephant-small.gif

I needed a name for a very underperforming vehicle 😅, that scene came to my mind and it also had "Subaru" in the name (that's the Japanese name for the Pleiades, as they're also depicted in the car brand's logo). It was just a perfect match!

(also did a test screening of the Hauler leaderboard to a couple of Italian frends, they immediately went ROFLing. Mission accomplished!)
I'm a simple man, I can be entertained with very, very little it seems. :p

As one of the VR pilots, I recommend OBS.

I don't have all the kinks worked out as the resolution doesn't match quite right yet, but as Raiko can attest, the videos are useable. Feel free to message me with any questions, I'll be happy to share what I've figured out (Unless someone with more experience volunteers, the share with me please ;P )

Also, Thanks again for the race Raiko. I either had incredibly good luck on my first run, or incredibly bad luck on the following twenty or so.

Thanks again for the excellent race. Here's a video of my last run.

When I finished this run, I thought to myself, "Wow, that's the best I've ever done in a Buckyball race! I didn't mess up anything, I went fast through the slots and tunnels, and I made it back in one piece!" I hit 381 m/s in one of the tunnels, and 276 was my fastest through the slot. Of course, that's nothing compared to the leaders, but it's fast as heck for me!

My first 'good' Buckyball run, alas, was not to be. Raiko discovered that I went to the adjacent Listening Post, so I was at the wrong one (they are close to each other but it was still wrong). So it turns out I did, in fact, mess up the race. As usual, lol. Raiko was nice to leave my name on the roster, I really should have been disqualified.

It was still a very fun time. I learned a lot. I got to say HI to some Thargoids. I flew like a madman (relatively speaking), and I had a blast.

I'm looking forward to the next time!

Really appreciate the thought Raiko, thank you o7
I managed to resolve the recording issues

And really appreciate the offer UmbraRex o7
It took a bit of figuring out but I think I'm ok for the moment

So:
"Not one?"
"Nope" Sgurr watched the barkeep disolve into laughter.
"You've heard ... of ... RTFM right?" The barkeep was struggling to breath, talk and laugh"
"Yup, although to be fair the last run's problem was more reflex"
Sgurr was a little concerned, the barkeep was starting to wheeze, but was laughing himself and enjoying the barkeep's reaction, even though it wasn't the way he'd hoped to be amusing them.

"What happened on the last run then?" Their breathing was a little more controlled.
Sgurr flashed back to his instinctive glance left to see 2 jumps remaining, right panel, synthesis, FSD boost, and then mentally slapped his forehead. He hadn't even realised he'd done it until looking at the flight logs later.
That's what happens when you combine optimising jumps for CG speed runs with trying to race home on your best run yet. Between that and the A class fuel scoop instead of C it had wiped out all of his runs.

"That's some proper muppetry right there and it's made my day" smiled the barkeep. Reaching behind them they plonked a bottle on the bar.
"On the house"
"Cheers" Sgurr raised his glass and smiled.

"I'm guessing you'll be leaving the Hauler behind then?"
"Actually no. Lets just say I now have an appreciation of its talents if not the finishing. Besides, there will be another race and given the difficulty I had following build instructions I think it's best to have one I prepared earlier. Might change the name though ... "
"Sure." The barkeep nodded and went to serve another customer.

Sgurr savoured the house drink while studying the leader board, some seriously impressive times there, and he'd had too much fun to mind not having his name there.
His thoughts were interupted as the barkeep returned grinning and dramatically placed a cooking spoon on the counter
Sgurr laughed, "Ha that's only fair, I might have to hang it somewhere"

5 runs in total plus 2 aborted. Things what I did:
- first few runs where I plotted a route after carefully selecting scoopable stars, only to hit unscoopable stars and dealing with it or restarting before finally twigging that I hadn't done "apply to route"

- On all but the last run I had an A class fuel scoop fitted, and then when I realised my mistake I was having a good run and then synthed an FSD boost
I was doing stints on the Alliance CG and at one point was automatically FSD synthing when I saw 2 jumps on the left panel, then had a brain fart while doing the run. (and Raiko I suspect you would have been understanding, and I would be for anyone else, but I'm good with not submitting and RTFM'ing better next time :))

- One run had 4 hyperdictions with 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 interceptors  I mean the hauler punches above its weight but not that far

- Many, many, many loops of shame

- Dropping into Squirrels Nest way too close for comfort, was doing 2500+m/s passing the superstructure, not sure the escape pod would have been much help there

I've really enjoyed readin/watching others attempts and I had a lot of fun.
Many, many thanks Raiko and o7 to you all

Many, many, many loops of shame
There's no such thing - well not unless you're flying a Type-9, and even then it's better than the "7 second" blue zone.

If you can pull off a perfect Buckyball approach then you'll decelerate perfectly using gravity braking from maybe a 3 second timer and hit blue speed at exactly the right time. Otherwise a "loop of shame" is exactly what you're looking for, they're miles faster than approaches by anyone that calls them loops of shame.

@furrycat did a side by side comparison of four different approach techniques, that I want to link to but can't find on the new forums. But trust me, forget the shame just make the loop good!
