Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club presents: X^2 Marks the Dash (Triple Eight Championship, Race 8)

Joining the thread late, but Kris Kross (like an X, get it?) will make you jump jump...

Regulation Cobra: Sag Wagon
Unlimited: DBX Chelone (hmm, nope...)
Dolphin Terpedo (shoot, that would have been a good one...)
I'll come up with something.

As for the route, all this discussion has me worried I've missed something, as usual. 🤔😬

I've got a question regarding the BREEZE adjustment. Which "end of the jump" time should I use?

End of a jump when your target indicator changes from "Unknown"
D. Clock at the end of jump (you have a frame with the claimed clock time and target reading as "Unknown")

I ask because a couple of seconds before the jump completes, my ship's clock drifts off the screen every single time!

To me it looks like the clock drifts off screen just before the end of the jump (deceleration, presumably), but then snaps back into view right as it completes and "unknown" disappears. Except for the one time I was looking up in frustration and was jolted back to attention by the sound of the jump ending...

Same. On checking frame-by-frame in Photo Editor, the jump ends and the "unknown" disappears, there is a blank frame, and then the destination star and the cockpit and HUD reappears. I was going to submit based on the clock when everything reappears, but I'll try loading the file into Shotcut tomorrow which does true frame-by-frame. If that doesn't work I'll look at the mkv file that OBS produces before it downscales to an mp4, but this would be unverifiable.

Tonight's run has 6 tunnels and nearly 4 minutes I want to claim back. 😟

Unlimited run submitted!

Things I have learned today:

1) I now recall why I don't like racing the Asp Explorer ... the ship doesn't have any flippin' brakes so it completely ignores the fact that you've deployed your landing gear and just sails straight past your pad and smacks into the back wall of the station.

Most ships landing = Boules

Asp Explorer landing = Curling

2) Henslow City hates me for some reason. Several times I've arrived for it to simply refuse me docking permission, basically indefinitely until I completely shut down and restart the game.

Anyhoo, can't complain as I had zero Braben tunnels all morning and eventually managed to wrestle the ship around the course in a pretty decent time.

Last night’s review of my three (potential) best runs revealed that:
  • My first run will trim six seconds off my submitted unlimited run… if I measure the end of the jump by when the destination changes from “unknown” to the next point in my route.
  • My “weekend” run, even after adjustment, was slightly slower than my first run.
  • Yesterday morning’s run didn’t have Braben tunnels, but an obscured jump and a fumbled jump.
  • With adjustments, both confirmed and estimated, there is currently a twenty nine second spread between all attempts. Docking at Henslow City is where I’m struggling the most.
Afterwards, I had just enough free time last night that I decided to complete one of my weekly missions, and position myself for completing the second. As luck would have it, I was able to complete the third, and the second can’t be completed, so I returned to base to set up for another unlimited run in this morning.

Which I just completed... and my time was within that spread. It looks like my Unlimited route jump to Wolf 1060 is obscured for a couple of days, which is costing me fifteen seconds. Definitely time to move on to my Regulation route, especially since it doesn't share that particular jump with Unlimited. :)

There's a saying I like, "The Apprentice makes mistakes. The Journeyman makes fewer mistakes. The Master corrects her errors before they become mistakes." Thanks to PowerPlay 2.0 altering what I consider a "playable window" for this game, I've finally graduated to Journeyman. I'm still making many errors, but only one mistake per run. Which is pretty good, given the number of waypoints involved in this race, IMO. :D (y)

At any rate, I've resubmitted my Unlimited Run, with the Braben Tunnel adjustment added.

I don't know if it helps to simplify the explanation but for the purposes of BREEZER the Braben tunnel duration is measured as the LONGEST period of time over which the system in the lower left panel shows as "UNKNOWN" (i.e. from the instant it appears to the very last instant before it disappears again).

That’s what I assumed, but it was ambiguous enough that I wanted clarification. Especially how annoying the “station clock must be visible” requirement can be in VR. “Why is that docking pad spotlight light right there, blinding me? WHY???” ;)

I have played with a massively increased FOV for years, so I wasn't aware this was an issue.

Alec did say that using the FSD cooldown timer in the lower right could be an issue for Headlookers.

I suggest increasing your FOV so the clock on onscreen all the time?

Even though we've moved mostly to videos, keeping the idea that submissions could be entirely screenshots generally makes decisions crisp and clear.

D. Clock at the end of jump (you have a frame with the claimed clock time and target reading as "Unknown")

These are supposed to be the same thing. If you could take a screenshot from after the change, you could make it significantly later, whereas if it's from before, that sets bounds on either side of the jump.

Is this not possible for you?

I feel like worst case, you can find a frame from a few seconds before the end of the jump, and even though it's not optimal, you would still be able to claim like a minute of loading time and only lose a few seconds.

I know it doesn't make it any better, but the docking pad spotlights are also an issue in non-VR, one of them is positioned in JUST the wrong place!

I’ve been submitting video, so the second time stamp should be within a second of the switch between “unknown” and the destination station. I’ll look into altering the FOV, but I’ve found that altering it too much just makes things look wrong.
