One thing I've always recommended for time short Commanders (like myself) is that when engineering, concentrate on G3 engineering at first, and use those G5 components (especially data and raw materials, which are harder to come by) to trade down with. G3 Engineering gives you about 90% of the benefits of a fully G5 module, has a
much smaller penalty, and uses only 2% of the materials. After you've finished with the G3 Engineering, then you can start strategically improving your modules to G5, starting with the FSD and Thrusters.
Also, don't grind for your materials if at all possible, but keep your eyes open for opportunities to gather them as you play normally. I've always carried a Wake Scanner and scanned a single wake on my way out from a station. I investigated any USSs along my flight path and dropped into Encoded (frequently a good source for data) and HGEs (you only need a few these days to fill up most of your lesser bins) I encountered. And when I had an reason to descend to the surface of a world, I'd land and use my SRVs
WAVE scanner to sweep for metallic meteorites.
