I agree, the Adder's a solid ship for long jumps... But I think its main problem is that for the budget explorer, it still costs 500k more than this, which can jump quite a bit further (even if you put the fuel tank back to full size)
Quick someone hide that build! It's OP as heck for the price :D

Hope you cleaned house, Sadge, cuz you got company!

And the hits just keep on coming! Once again my psychic prediction that nobody would be running during the week was proven wrong again. I know this may shatter some worldviews you hold dear, but try to fight through it. You're Buckyballers.

So four Commanders today (errr, and yesterday. And the day before...) find themselves at Sagittarius A* and more importantly in possession of the most important trophy in the chronicles of human civilization: the coveted star pip on the Big Board, and that most treasured of achievements, the Buckyball Run A* bumper sticker. Cue the trumpets and the drums! (Well, only Max requested those, but he seems like a good guy so maybe he'll share.)

First up, CMDR Emua made a most impressive run in the Asp Le Cherche Voie, coming in with an impressive time of 12 hours, 6 minutes and 19 seconds, just twenty minutes behind CMDR Alot's record Asp run. It's good enough for a top five spot, which considering the three Anacondas and Alot as competition is pretty damn spectacular!

Then, just a couple ticks later, CMDR's DoubleSkulls and Mad Max hauled their respective Asps out to Sadge in a somewhat more leisurely fashion, with DoubleSkull's Red Devil clocking a 62 hour run, and Mad Max's Lyndsey sauntering in a couple days later.

Finally, taking first in the dogged determination category, CMDR Kyra Inari's Sidewinder Don't Look Back completed the journey to Sagittarius A* in just under 10 days. It turns out Don't Look Back is some good advice, because there's an awful lot of space between these CMDR's and home. Congratulations to all of you! And remember, top times don't mean everything in this run. It doesn't matter how long it takes you to get to Everest, as long as you get to the peak and plant your flag! (Or bumper sticker in this case. Everybody loves bumper stickers.)

No new contenders to report, but I expect over time they'll trickle in. And, just as a heads up to the racing public, Bucky and I just received a note that had a lot of really boring words on it like disturbing the peace, reckless endangerment and summons to appear. So in about a week or so we're going to be taking a brief holiday while some friends of ours do a little repair work on our data profiles. Anybody who wants can still make the Run of course (The Man isn't gonna hold us down!) but the Big Board will probably not get updated during that time. But when we return, rest assured your submissions will be recorded with the same precision and attention to detail that is synonymous with the Buckyball Run. :p

The Radio Sidewinder News report on CMDR Kligg's new record has been recorded.

It's now in the hands of the Editors and Producers to be Chopped up, taken out of Context, Censored, and Force Fed to the Masses via your Ear Holes in the near future.

Hey Z,

Maybe you might wanna mention this to Bucky, since he's updating the Big Board after all.. to have some kind of consistency :D

Ya know, either it's "5d 13hr 43min 12sec" or it's "133hr 43min 12sec".... it sometimes gives someone an incorrect perception of how fast/slow his time is...

Anyway here's my entry for my Vulture:

Name: Cmdr Pete 'FoxTwo' Aldric
Ship: Vulture
Shipname: Pilgrim Suicide Bomber
Take Off Date: Meh... 29th May 3301 maybe... unless the Steam key acts up and my ED install is all crazy at that point in time. Otherwise yeah should be able to take off :p

ps: yes I plan to do the explodey method to get home after I arrive at Sag A* :D

Well we got that scoreboard second hand and it's only programmable through a series of physical DIP switches and the touch screen has a bezel that says it's "Jello Resistant" (don't ask where I got it) which makes the interface really wonky. We got one heck of a deal for it though.

Anyway, long story short, resizing columns is for Aucoks so we're stuck with 9 characters, which means when you slackers take more than 99 hours Bucky records it in days. That way he also doesn't have to do a lot of math. Bucky hates math.

BTW - glad to see you made it back to home space, also glad your bumper sticker was waiting for you. You win the Asia division of the Bumper Sticker race! And you're really going back out in a Vulture? Geez wonder what the scoreboard will do with times over 99 days? :D

YAY!

Oh don't worry. The name of the ship will give you a clue.. I'll arrive at Sag A* pretty quick and then blow up. It should take maybe 30 hours max. I'm figuring that it should take around 2 days .... maybe 3 at most, including eating, sleeping, watching TV time etc. After all I have the exact jump points from my first run, so I don't need to "search". I'll just use the Vulture and follow the path of the Cobra :)

ps: Not too shabby... 22 LY configuration too... gotta try this in-game to make sure....

Oh FoxTwo, for heavens sake, drop the shield and get the class A power plant; the heat is the thing in scooping! I understand that you dont need more than a class C scoop for that little ride, but you'll be scooping at almost every jump you do. Two full-range jumps in that tank, so you better not go through Aucoks-like terrain: Two non FOG-KBAM stars in a row and you're sorted.

I cheer for you in a Vulture run, it's a good little ship; but as Bucky says, once you leave Galileo, there's no going back for sunglasses. Or power plants.

Edit: hm, nevermind, really. After thinking on how you plan on completing your run, a little heat damage will not stop you. But my point on dropping your shield still holds.

First of all congratulations to commanders Emua, Double Skulls, Max and Kyra. Sheesh, what we have here is the Sag A equivalent of rush hour, hope you guys remembered to pay the Congestion charge before you left home!

EZ, sorry to here about your troubles, what happened? Did you leave Bucky alone in the house by himself?

My run is still set for next Thursday but I'll try and give it some extra wellie to get my time in before the big board shuts down. If there's anyone still out there (or heading out) next week then send me a friend request (Alec Turner) and I'll get Sam to buy you all a round when he gets there (assuming he remembers to bring his 27B/6 and it's not too far to the nearest bar and/or cashpoint machine).

Thanks for the comments and ideas. The beautiful thing about following my Cobra route is that I know every star along the route is scoopable :) As I mentioned before earlier in this thread - I never knew about Aucoks until the guys ran into it on that Saturday Convoy. For me I've been skimming along 100 to 150 LY above galactic plane and never encountered anything less than a class M. Everything also was instant-plot until about 2000 LY away from Sag A* then I just need to reduce distance down to about 450 LY and just cross that patch.

Once I'm between 600 LY to 400 LY from Sadge I can go back to instant plot again :D

But yeah I'll think abt the shield and powerplant. I might even try a trial 1,300 LY run to Orion to test the loadout first :D

22ly is about the same range as an exploration Sidewinder, so the Sidewinder times should be a good guide.

I've got to agree with Mad-Max though, the 2D reactor isn't worth it, the 2A saves you so much in heat.

Warning! there is a tool in SagA so be wary if you are unarmed.

So soon after my message of congratulations and now I have to send my sympathies out to Double Skulls for being shot down by some lone Tuscan Raider, camped out at Sag A and picking off Buckyballers and other fellow explorers for kicks. Where's Obi Wan when you need him eh?

EZ, don't suppose you feel like relaxing the Open rule, at least for arrival at Sag A?

I would like to call on the Buckyball community to contribute to a reward for the first person to take out the Sag A* sniper. I was thinking along the lines of a promise to donate 50t or so of Palladium each.

This would have to managed outside of the forum because of the, quite reasonable, naming and shaming rules but I'm sure Bucky knows of somewhere less *ahem* "reputable" than the Shotgun Shine where we can meet to continue our clandestine arrangements?

Of course ultimately I will leave the decision to approve this to EZ and Bucky, perhaps they're not the vengeful sort?

Thanks for agreeing Raiko, then I'm not just a rabid tech-trailblazer :)
FoxTwo, let me tell you about one night in the final leg for Sag A, the last 5k. I was a wee bit tired, but not worried too much. Then one of those scoops came, where the yellow safety ring of "do-not-cross-or-be-cross-about-it" around the star didn't show up until it was too late. I have a habit of keeping the scoop just under it's max rate just to be sure that I don't get too close, but missed it here. I disgracefully got yanked out of SC with 84% heat and some damage. The ship immediately cooled to 60% and when i fired up the FSD (after turning of the scoop module) i only got to about 93%.
All this thanks to two things: My A grade class 2 power plant and all non-essential modules switched off: Cargo scoop, shield (yeah i got a little one, just in case), power dist and scanner. It leaves me a safety margin big as a street for those blunders of the night. Might save you out there.
But then again, now that you plan to drive your Vulture into Sag A when you're done, a little thermal damage won't do any difference :D

A very distinct growl was heared from "Gjallarhorn" when I brought this up on the onboard computer. Surely this is the ultimate griefing.

Screw the palladium, nigh is the time for action. Tonight, I shall depart with Gjallarhorn for the fourth time, not for exploration, not for racing, but for blood.

I was seriously contemplating a fourth go on the race, but this changed it all.

CMDR: Anuranium
Ship type: Anaconda
Ship name: "Gjallarhorn"

Bravo sir, bravo!

P.S. Excuse the pillaging of that image whoever first used it, but it's just so good.
