Bye bye auto dock and super cruise assist!

Well maybe not bye bye, I’m keeping them around, but I’ve just made two successful docks (and it’s so much fun) with auto dock and auto launch turned off, and also, turned off super cruise auto throttle and am flying on my own steam! Only 20 hours in. Every time I played this game before I couldn’t get past the tutorial because I couldn’t dock, this auto dock saved my butt and made me enjoy the game, now I’m enjoying it EVEN MORE with auto dock turned off because landing is so fun!
What does Supercruise Assist actually do apart from slow you down as you jump into a system (why I’m keeping it around.) I don’t notice any difference now it’s turned off.

Well done mate, took me a lot longer than that to get used to manual launching/docking.

But now that you’ve made that leap you can bin or store those modules and use the space for something a little more useful.

Next step, flying through the mail slot at 200m/s 👍

I've started using Supercruise Assist more recently because if you trigger it at the right time you can get to your destination faster. This video will show you what I mean:

As a newbie though you're probably not in such a rush to get places. I'd encourage you just to enjoy the game for now!

Well I’ll keep them around until I’ve got more practice in and am zipping in and out of stations. What happens without the deceleration on entrance to a system? Have you gotta quickly slam the brakes on?
Although having two extra module slots might be really handy... I have to say I’m enjoying the game a lot more now I’m flying manual, it’s more immersive. But I think it was the right decision to give all n00bs autodock and supercruise assist, because I actually bought this game years ago, on PC and Xbox, and couldn’t fly on either and so gave up. But the more gentle intro has taught me pretty fast how to fly!

Ah is this an exploit? It doesn’t seem like it’s meant to work that way. But I am kind of a role player too, which is why I really want VR to look around and see my spaceship instead of my room, and I’m not a min/max profit type of player, sometimes I supercruise really slow to my destinations even though this is probably radically reducing my income per hour, because it’s fun and I feel like a real space trucker!

I have to have auto dock. That's my potty time and my chance to get a refill. Over 1200 hours played and not a single hour of that was without a DC. Not a single one. Not exaggerating.

Never used SC assist though. Never really seen a need for it.
I don’t know if I’m doing supercruise assist wrong or something but I am much better without it turned on.

You could call it that I suppose, I think of it more of as a trick.

I've never used auto dock but then I have too much fun landing manually.

I did the same, I spent like a day practicing launching/docking with them just turned off.
Then after a few days I almost forgot they were even there and decided I wanted the extra space for other things.
Having a 1A Collector Limpet on a Bounty Hunting ship can be a very handy tool after blowing up a load of pirates or a Detailed Surface Scanner if you’re an Explorer.

Also about Hyper Jump re-entry.

If you zero your throttle during the Hyper Space loading screen you’ll be at a complete stop when you drop into the next System.

It took me a few almost fatal accidents to work that one out 😂

I like this kid!!!

It's bordering an exploit, it's not exactly how Frontier intenede it working, but they don't get their underwear in a twist about it and have thus tacitly sanctioned it. However, I like your approach to this sort of things, so since we seem to be quorate on misusing features of the game, I'm going to share with you a long established, slightly more skillful approach to decreasing travel time in elite - gravity braking. Essentially when you get near a planetary body, it's gravity slows down your supercruise travel speed, which is a pain when you are climbing out of the gravity well of a planetary landing, but is a boon when you want to wipe off speed in a hurry, like hot shoeing it to a starport:

Back when I started, the ADC and SCA didn't exist. At best we had the basic docking computer and that was an optional extra. Honestly I like them, they are particularly useful in those situations when I'm really too tired to play, but then again I just need to finish something. It's good to learn to go without them though. I've had occasions when the modules have failed due to combat or heat damage. Not a major problem for me and something of a relief that it wasn't something more vital.

This seems difficult but fun, and also, this very thing was used in a sci fi book I read once, where the way all ships slowed down was to enter the orbit of a planet and loop around it using the gravity somehow to drain their speed. I didn’t understand the science behind it but it was one of those scientifically accurate sci fi books (hard sci fi is it called?) so I assume it’s a real thing.

I will have a go at this manoeuvre though at some point. Just basic flying atm though, not there yet!

I was talking to my friend today, telling him about the game. He played the original Elite! He’s getting the game immediately. But he said in the old Elite (maybe 1995 edition not the 1984 one) you started off with no docking computers and had to really struggle, and then could buy one later, so it’s kind of reversed now, but I think the new way is better because the initial difficulty of the game the first times I tried it put me off, but this way I think will put less people off. Such a great game. Hopefully the new walking around Odyssey expansion won’t detract from development of the space game.

If you're exploring, supercruise assist lets you AFK whenever you're flying out to that ELW or WW that is tens or hundreds of thousand light seconds away
So hang on let me get this straight: supercruise on, point your ship in the right direction, and you just fly there automatically and never overshoot?
