Canyon Racers, do not despair

Help is good, and I don't think it matter who helps or why. That's all. :)
No reason in this thread - which is nicely focused on the terrain required and issues surrounding it in support of the playstyle to get into the stuff the other threads are for. Those ones are fun though - would be a shame to let em die.

Who cares what people call you? Do you want to help the other racers who would certainly be grateful if you found said playground? I know I do, even if I don't race. Hell, I've started hunting it just for the challenge of trying to find the right place. If it helps these folks in the process, so much the better.
You are completely right.
And of course I was only toying.

So was I obviously. But I know people are looking ... I look at planets as well.
It's a part of ED charm.

I really enjoyed looking for mining hotspots overlaps and publish my results on mining discord,
even after I almost stopped mining at all because I had more credits then I could ever need.

Such activities are triggering some kind of internal reward mechanism
we have probably inherited after thousands of generations of evolution.
We are herd animals after all.

Heh, I didn't intend for earlier my response to sound angry or anything. The downside of reading text on a forum is that it lacks tone and can be hard to pick up the context it was intended in sometimes. I know people are kidding, I just want to try to keep the negativity away, given what I chose to name the thread.

I'm starting to think that it won't be ice worlds where we'll find this terrain. Admittedly, they look realistic enough when comparing them with pictures of Europa and such, but they don't seem to form the right structures. I'll keep hunting and try to lock down what type of planets might generate the right type of terrain, even if it's not tall enough. Hoping the height of the features can be altered by changing a simple value somewhere.

May have spoken too soon... here's an ice world with the right kind of terrain, in the bubble too. Sadly the structures aren't quite as tall as you'd hope, but I'll put it up just in case.

Edit: Oops, I lied, it's HMC world.

Those look nice, but even still, even on the most jagged looking points, there seems to be a rounding or smoothing of the lines.
I'm liking the new colours on planets, but wish they could revert the terrain below to that of Horizons. If ground bases cause issue, only flatten those planets or preferrably small areas where they are, and leave the other alone. They could say the flattening of those areas is terraforming.

Hooning should be a thing that generates points, has a scoreboard, etc. In some racing games, you can do normal racing, but once you drift, you start getting drifting points. Do the same in ED...would be a blast.

That absolutely demonstrates the problem described. Thanks for contributing.

For more info, I'll re-quote the post I made in the previous page you may have missed -
That post was the equivalent of your Aunt buying you offbrand sneakers and claiming they are the same.

I'd certainly prefer that to CQC...
Might also have more participants.

Hooning is about pushing yourself and your ship as hard as you can into places mentally and physically you’ve never been able. It’s freeform and it’s a blast. It’s like rallying in 3D without the pace notes, it’s like pure off piste skiing down some steep slopes. It’s about reactions and skill and the unknown. When it all clicks and you’re in the zone, it’s sublime.

It is definitely not about drifting and points though! :)

Racing is somewhat related (not speaking from personal experience) and can utilise same skills and technique to a degree, I understand.

Closest I’ve done to racing is in informal races around The Crucible ‘track’ on TZ Arietis, and actually it’s really awesome fun doing ‘laps’ using hooning techniques. Not sure it should be formalised as such but it could be cool to have more exposure of the informal ‘tracks’ in terms of notoriety.

To contradict myself a little though, I have been having a blast recently in CMDR Jukibom’s Fly Dangerous racetrack challenges.

You forgot to tell them which planet this is. Include a screencap from inside the cockpit where they can see the planet and the coordinates.
Did I now... Hmmm. I already told Newton's Gambit. Shall I share it twice? Hmmm...

Alright. But just for you. Nobody else is allowed to click, okay? ...

Heh, I've actually not got into racing/hooning yet. It was something that I only recently started thinking about doing and then when they announced Odyssey, I figured I'd just wait and do it with awesome new textures and such (ironically). But just in case there are players out there that aren't part of a group or what not, I try to make sure I have a shot of the location/coordinates.

You know about Newton's Gambit?
Worth a look if you want to get into canyon stuff and FA off flying:

Yeah, I heard about them. Will probably hit them up when the issues with Odyssey get sorted out and I can run the game without my GPU's fan running full-speed the entire time, heh.

Still can't seem to find any canyons that hit over a 1km in height. If you don't mind racing close to the ground, I'm finding some spots that seem like you could sorta make a course in. Not sure about hooning in this stuff. It wouldn't be as exciting as the videos that were linked earlier. I'm sure it would feel kinda 2D in comparison. I will keep hunting though.
