Since when has Fallout 4's HUD been "iconic"? The least popular Fallout of all time, maybe, with no options for HUD tailoring beyond opacity and colour? I have an almost fanatical loathing of all HUD's where immersion is a factor (unless it's something like Deus Ex, where HUD elements work as part of the very sci-fi, integrated-tech world/theme), so I modded Fallout's HUD (and Skyrim's) away as soon as I could.
Aside from that, yes, simply comparing Elite to any other game doesn't really work.
And I know it's a matter of design convenience, but I think it's absurd that everything from traders to high-end military capable ships operate with identical HUD's (regardless of colour). From an internal lore POV it makes no sense why, say, Lakon and Saud Kruga or the Apple iShips Gutamaya's HUD designs would be identical, given the divergence of design and what that's projecting (functionality or functional-luxury).
As an ideal solution - meaning this likely won't ever happen - each manufacturer would have their own aesthetic, even if the data being relayed to the pilot is identical. Beyond that, a modular HUD with perhaps three custom profiles would allow customisation between ships, depending on role type or simple preference. As an explorer, for example, having long/lat larger and in a more useful position would be very handy.
