Yes, you can mix kits.
Nice. At some point I might get it then. In the meantime, I would not complain if you were to make some funky examples

Nice to see you back mate!
Swapped to the diamondback yet?
No, I wiped my PC save earlier because reasons, and on Xbox, still running my tank without shields.
Which naturally is a Mk III.
Damn! You still playing Ironman. You are nuts.!!
This ship, more than any other, keeps getting used over the years.

I'm like that with my Mk IV
My MK4 is a small time mining ship I use from time to time when I'm doing missions. It is a lovely ship but I always get a little sad they made it so exclusive. Rather we'd have gotten free ones and everyone else could purchase them.
Hey guys, need some advice.
I recently became the proud owner of a Cobra Mk. III. I've been playing for about a week and using a sidewinder. I really enjoyed how it handled, but I wanted to break into doing long distance taxing/deliveries.
Liking the Cobra so far, but I need some suggestions for load out. I'm planning to venture into passenger missions because there seems to be much more money there. What do you suggest?
Thanks!
First think with passenger missions is to take any missions you can to build reputation with one or more factions from where you plan to work from. High pop systems tend to be good. If you want one way missions, then industrial and high tech can be good. For sightseeing missions, tourist systems.
For long and medium range sightseeing, make sure you have a fuel scoop. Also watch out for suspicious passenger or wanted passengers, you have to be careful with those.
Build wise its fairly simple. You're usually looking for jump range and speed, don't neglect shields of course. Weapons not really needed as you shouldn't be looking to get into a fight.

Awesome. Thanks! Is there a way to discern which systems are industrial/high tech/tourist?
Just got myself the Raider ship kit for the MKIII as well as blue engine trails and weapon effects...Guess I'm buying a MKIII again when I come back from doing the ancient ruins mission..
And then sharing the pictures.
And quite possibly some FA-off videos as well
