Frontier's other IPs did not do well. It is good to see Frontier investing in Elite, no doubt, but it comes as a consequence, more than intent alone (Frontier was absolutely banking on other titles as a priority, it pulled a lot of resources over to them).

The really nice thing about the Colonisation announcement is that it's clearly intended to be a long-term feature, meaning we've got many years of Elite Dangerous ahead, hopefully. The future really is bright right now.

Cobra MkV looks good from those early pics … I assume it will be on the smaller side for a medium pad ship and not trouble the Python or Krait Mk II for internal space … maybe similar to Phantom? scaling the weapons up to 2 medium / 2 large would make sense vs the weapons on the small Cobras, I think. Or 3 medium / 2 large would give it some real teeth but make the FAS look even more ridiculous …

yes but what about small ships ? are all sco ships gonna be mediums ? really love the design, its by far the coolest shipd yet but i was hoping the next update would bring more small ship focused gameplay with an sco small ship to go along with it
the 10th anniversary would be a nice day to drop the mk4 along with the mk5, lets keep on dreamin

Zac said in the twitch stream that the Mk V is only slightly bigger than the Mk 3, but this bumps it into the medium category.
That and the pictures suggest it's going to be a very small medium ship

I didn't know I wanted a Cobra Mk V until today, and the whole system colonisation is so much better than plain old base building.

Fortunately, it isn't mandatory gameplay, so you might just continue being disillusioned in normal play instead. (Assuming you play at all, naturally)

I’m curious what level of customisation people would want or expect. Would it be enough to choose an Orbis, Ocellus or Orbital station in the system we’ve colonised? Assuming we can do that are we including planetary bases of all sorts currently available? That will be customisation. Or are people wanting modular customisation with differently designed sub sections of bases, stations etc available and would that be acceptable if available only via ARX purchases, otherwise your left with currently available ‘basic’ assets?

Whichever way it goes the customisation will only go so far, with no Cmdr able to build a truly unique base/station; simply an alternate based upon layout.

I'd prefer less customisation. Let me choose what asset to put on or in orbit around which body, but I don't want to be 'designing' assets. There's plenty of other games that let me micro-design in that manner, I don't fancy getting bogged down in that level of detail in Elite.

Cobra mk 5 being a medium multirole? And what would be her features to stand out in that segment? Today we're also getting Mandalay which also is a multirole ship with excellent jump range. What would that Cobra be like? Definitely not like large and expensive mediums such as Krait MK2 or Python. My bet is C5 will be pretty much closer to smaller medium sided vessels like Asp or Keelback with great boost and overall speed and hardpoint placement known from Cobra MK4.
Personally would love to see new Cobra in small class ships class. With that abundance of medium sized ships, small ones will become less and less popular, connoisseur ships only.

Just had a look at Coriolis - the air between the CMIV (or even the CMIII) and the Asp Scout is quite thin.

Yes!

The number of opinions as to what if any is acceptable customisation will be approximately 2-3 times the number of players asked.

Yup. It was mentioned in the twitch stream that they were glass like the mandalay and the view is incredible!!!
So no need to speculate as it's come straight from the horses mouth.

I was really REALLY looking forward to the Mandalay today, but after last nights stream all I want is the Mk5. Still going to get and enjoy the Mandalay though.

I'm feeling the same. I can't wait to buy the Mandalay later, but unlike the Python Mk.II and Type-8, which had time to get under my skin before I saw what the next one would be, my eyes have already been turned by the Cobra Mk.V before ever setting foot in the Mandalay.
