Cobra mkV vs Python vs Krait

So, like a Federal Assualt ship, but maybe with a bit more punch, and an SCO drive...
They did that one already.

I mean you could have posted a Mandalay in this message and it would amount to the same thing, but nothing puts a dampener on a ship more than terrible maneuverability.
In fact, if it turns out it is slow to accelerate, personally, i will absolutely skip on it entirely, even when it becomes purchasable with credits.

Convergence can be managed, but its still preferable for it to support all kinds of weapons and not make the mistake the Cobra MK3 and Clipper have, IE: certain hardpoints, or in the latter case, ALL the hardpoints are all but incapable of running fixed weapons in any sort of practical manner.

Also, on the point about ship handling. The Type-8 handles beautifully and that amounts to a brick with some thrusters attached. In fact, its the only one of the trade ships I actively enjoy flying. Likewise the lack of handling is the reason I purposely avoid ships like the Cobra3, Courier and Kraits.

Yes, and compared to the difference between, say, a type 9 and a Federal Corvette, the Type 8 isn't very unlike these two either. Given the pattern, I wouldn't expect the Mk 5 to vary in any particularly interesting way.

This is my favorite multipurpose ship to fly, but good grief was a lot of potential thrown away! In real life, hot rod ship engineers would section down the wings on these so that it would fit on a medium pad and fight like it should. Gutamaya makes no medium ship. FDEV introduces four new ships to the game. All medium. None from Gutamaya. It makes me hurt inside.

Probably not nah, though all the new ships handle very well, and I hope FDev continue in this direction. More modern ships, better performance.
Also, wishful thinking though it may well be... I hope next year we get an updated version of the Viper and the Eagle. Small ships have so much potential to be absolutely brilliant for combat, but its a two horse race in such that the Viper 3 and 4 far surpass anything else in the class for that discipline. In fact, really, its only a one-horse race as the MKIV is massively better than the MKIII.

Yeah it was a bit like that.. Between the goofy hardpoints layout and the size I've never managed to bring myself to engineer one. I know it handles well, but those two things are absolutely deal-breakers.
Though yeah, a medium Imp' ship and a small Fed' ship that isnt the Vulture, would both be nice, and you know what, so would an Alliance small ship, and a large ship. (Though i would have little interest in the latter personally, it would help flesh out the gaps in the roster)

And no, before some smart-cheeks pipes up, the Type-10 does not count as the Alliance large, its an abomination that should never have made it out of the shipyards :D

The imperial courier outclasses both vipers IMO. Granted, I've never bothered building a Viper for combat; I've just farmed wake scans with them, but the courier doesn't leave anything on the table for a tiny ship that fights. Its bigger power plant and the swap of 2 sm hard points for a third medium give the courier potential for weapon loadouts that I feel more than outweigh the slight drop in speed. And it jumps quite a bit further.

But no, no love for small or large ships this year (if ever). No black. No white. Just four shades of gray. From that perspective, it's insult on injury that the fourth medium ship is a Cobra....

Defensively, yes, its as strong as the MKIV, but only in terms of shield. Its less maneuverable, it accelerates significantly slower and has all round much worse transitional thruster performance. (The MKIV has a very similar transitional thruster profile and acceleration to the FDL for reference)

It jumping further makes sense, it is a courier ship after all, as per the name. Though I can't say thats something thats really a consideration to a combat vessel.

No, not yet it would seem, but here's to hoping. Good god I want more variation in what are considered "meta" choices when it comes to combat.

Something in between a Python, Krait II, and a Krait Phantom.

It should compete with the Python for internals, not necessarily for the same number of size 6s and 5s (it seems like a smaller ship) but at least the same total amount of internals even if they are smaller overall.

It should be at least as fast and jump range as a Krait II, maybe even approaching a Krait Phantom.

Less weapon capable than Python or Krait II, maybe 2L, 2M, 2S for a nice rounder.

Size 6 PP/Distro

Oh well, i'm really glad Zac messed it up in the previous stream and the Viper Cobra Mk5 is actually a small ship

Yep, same here.

Firstly, I was kind of worried that some technical issue meant they couldn't implement pay-ships of any other size than Medium and, secondly, I really, really, like my Small ships.

Looking at the spec's in one of OA's video's, it definitely looks like it could replace my iCourier as a light recon' ship and it might even replace the Mandalay that I've barely got used to flying!

Comparing the Cobra V to the Python and Krait is a bit harsh. Python and Krait are uppermost tier medium pad, sharing or even surpassing the bottom tier large pad ships (T7, Clipper, Orca). The peers of the Cobra V are the bottom tier mediums, AspS, AspX, T6. It surpasses them. It's mostly on par with the Mandalay.

Are we there yet?

To be fair, this thread was started after the initial reveal of the CM5, where it was said to be a medium-pad ship.

First thing I said was that a new "multirole" medium ship is going to struggle to find a niche when we already had the Python/Krait/Phantom and then we got the Python 2 and Mandalay... as well as the T8, which I really only ignored because I'm not sure how versatile it is.

Now we know the CM5 is going to be a small ship, that's a whole different ballgame.
If you like flying small ships, the Dolphin is, really, the most versatile of the bunch and, if you don't want to fly the space-bus, your best option was to try and cram useful internals into an iCourier or, perhaps, a Viper 4.
And, yes, I realise that the DBX is almost as good as the Dolphin most people just use if as a basis for an exploration build and then pick something else for other roles.

The CM5 should allow most people to build a proper "miniature" of whatever medium multirole they fly... and hopefully FDev will provide us with a good reason to do so.
