ANNOUNCEMENT Community Update (22/10)

If FDev actually listened to the community, uses the beta's to their fullest and fix this game near completely (like 95%) then I'll enjoy seeing what else people will dig up to complain about. Oh I know, why can't my commander fly naked!! She's the only one in the darn ship!
As a nudist I'd fly naked. Its role-play after all. I'd even buy arx to make it happen :giggle:

Greetings Commanders,

Following the launch of the September Update last month, we’d like to provide you all with an update on our plans for Elite Dangerous.

Firstly, thank you for all of your feedback on the September Update, which you've shared with us on the forums, across social media, on livestreams and through the Issue Tracker. There is no doubt that, in addition to the new features, the September Update introduced a number of issues and bugs which caused a lot of frustration. We are really sorry for these issues. We realise that some of the issues had an impact on your ability to enjoy Elite Dangerous. The team have been working hard to address the most critical issues and have already released a series of patches and updates to bring those fixes in as quickly as possible.

However, we know there's more to be done. You've asked for more focus on existing bug/fixes and issues, and for the community to be better integrated into the development process and testing for these upcoming updates.

In order to improve your overall experience, we have decided to refocus our efforts on addressing key issues and bugs. Since the launch of the September Update, we've been taking a deeper look at our internal development roadmap, the way in which we utilise public betas, and the content of our next updates.

Here is a summary of our plans:
  • From now and into next year (2020), the updates will focus almost exclusively on addressing recent and longstanding issues, including those reported in the Issue Tracker, ultimately making the game better.
  • We are expecting to have a series of these updates, which will be rolled out (approximately) every three to four months.
  • Each update will also include a public beta that will run prior to the update's release, with a dedicated time to address major issues that appear.
  • The first of these updates will have its public beta in December, with an expectation that the launch will be early in 2020.
As a result of our updated plans, we have made the difficult decision to defer the release of Fleet Carriers. We are now planning for Fleet Carriers to be released in an update in the second quarter of 2020, rather than in December 2019 as previously stated. This will grant us additional time to refine the feature as well as focusing time on addressing existing reported issues. It will also ensure the state of the game is in a better position to introduce Fleet Carriers, that will provide Commanders even more opportunities to interact with the Milky Way. We understand that this delay will be disappointing for some players, but do know that this decision is one that we do not take lightly, and is made with the best interests of the community and game at heart.

Ultimately, we are confident that this will improve the Elite Dangerous experience for all our players.

The team have been hard at work on the next major milestone, which you may remember we mentioned back in March as our next major paid addition to the game. They’re making fantastic progress and on schedule for release by the end of next year. We are very excited to show you what we’ve been working on. However, we can only announce the content when it’s at the right stage of development, we estimate this will be ready to talk about at some time in summer 2020, after the Fleet Carriers update. We appreciate there is a bit of a wait, but we want to make sure it is ready to be shown before making our full official announcement to the world.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing and continued support and for helping give us the feedback, steer and insight to make decisions that will benefit the entire community and for your continued passion and dedication.
I'm glad you're taking steps to fix bugs BEFORE the updates get released. If the September update was bad, I'd hate to see how buggy fleet carriers would be without this.
It's pretty much a choice between bug fixes or content, and if content=bugs, then delays must happen.

I just realized that this is part of a master plan. You don't do anything with your game, people stop playing it and you have the perfect excuse to close it. Very clever Frontier. 25 years to resurrect and destroy a franchise.
The hold up of the century ? Too simple I think.

:)

Aside from my disdain of FDev crumbling to an 'open letter' from folk who claimed to be 'the community', but appeared to only invest 'community' to represent their own narrow views...

It is odd that the release of FC's should have been a mere 6 weeks or so away, logically the code would have been finished, all of the art & soundscapes created and final testing before release going on - now it is Q2 2020 - 5 to 8 months away, am I being too cynical to surmise the delay would have happened anyway?

Just want to be sure I have this correct. First a relatively functional game is monkey wrenched by a relatively minor new cosmetic currency app, and now Frontier needs an extra 6 months to fix what they broke?

Did I miss something? And does this mean the big 2020 update is being pushed back as well? Just want to make sure my expectations are being set appropriately.

OP literally says new era is on time. But we will see

Not yet but it will be. It would seem that they are limited on not just their testing resources but their dev resources and do not have a bug team to go with a content team. We get one or the other with no testing support. I hope "New Era" is correctly staffed.

The part of me that’s worn out on giving Frontier the benefit of the doubt is telling me that they weren’t going to have fleet carriers ready in time anyway, and they’re leveraging the conversation about bug fixes as a palliative. Question is: are they going to do what they say they’re going to do or is this just one more vaguepost non-announcement which will vanish into the ether as soon as real work and accountability come into play ala the Focused Feedback Forums? I’ll say this: I’m skeptical as all heck, but if it’s for real, and they follow through, I’ll be applauding.

No, you are correct. And it's not the first time it happens. This is FD's equivalent of me calling my boss to say I won't show up for work this week because I will dedicate the time to put on my pants. Sure, great, by all means. But I am still supposed to, you know, work.

The implied numbers do not add up to me.

Fleet carriers have been in development in some shape or form for more than a year. 6 weeks before they are due to be implemented, they are delayed by six months, for the reason of diverting said development effort to bug fixing.

There are obviously other factors at play that are not being shared.

The obvious guess would be Fleet Carriers have a large underlying reliance on ARX
No, I very much doubt it. Frontier would be shooting themselves in the ... bottom.

I think someone asked the question "When we release Fleet Carriers are we going to have this much mess again?"

And nobody could say "No."

They can't afford the next release to be a repeat of the September fiasco. They need to prove that they can make a clean release, both of a bug-fix and real content. That's what the next three updates will be: proof that they can clean house and learn from their mistakes.
There will be two bug-fix releases. One in January that gets all the easy bugs (up to two months work) and one three to four months after that that fixes the more involved bugs. As soon as that is out of the door, the Fleet Carriers will be two months out -- the same as they were yesterday. As of today, development on Fleet Carriers pauses for six months.
But by then they will have had practice at testing and releasing bug-free code and they will be building on a more stable platform.

Well well....

If all you have [for a prolonged time due to internal reasons] is a Carrot and a Stick - the one single thing you do not do approaching "Carrot Day" is.... drop the stick and run off.
You don't. Ever. There's obvious reasons you shouldn't do that. Unless maybe you're a month short of filing bankruptcy or something similarly severe.

So instead of saving and minimizing resources to such a bizarre point where the whole product, its quality and the whole deal starts hurting and things appear to visibly fall apart (see Sep Update as one of many examples), here's what you should do instead :
- take additional and exclusive Resources into your hands and construct that Carrot. Do it.

Invest and don't be shy. If you're "behind power curve" - the absolutely last thing you do is : cut power.
You do the opposite. Move Throttles beyond the detent and light Afterburners. You're behind power curve, that means you need additional power. It'll cost but you need it. It's worth it.

If you guys don't get that - you have deep structural problems that reach much further than some single Development Milestone your Resource Management is signaling you'll miss.

The way I see it, you've opted to "Jettison External Stores" instead to reduce gross weight. Quicker. Easier. Tempting.
It'll give you some short-lived relief - but it structurally won't solve anything. You'll get behind power curve. Again. And it's only a matter of time.

PS.
Again, there's Management behind the scenes who must have seen this coming a mile away already. It's not the first time after all.
And the exact same Management is still trusted and paid for to do "what we believe is best for ELITE and our Customers"?
Haha, you guys can't be serious.

PPS.
Did I ever tell you.... the definition of... Insanity?

Insanity... is... doing the exact same mistakes... over and over and over again... expecting things to change.
That... is... crazy.

And to round things up, going through all the usual FDev cycle of "Soon(tm)" through Teasers all the way to "Delay, Delay Cancel" , I can't help but think of that weird motivational Video ;)

This whole thing just smacks of serious leadership problems within FD. How can they be so dysfunctional that they need to delay projects that have already been delayed for a year. All so they can do what they should’ve been doing this whole year....

Their saving grace is a lack of competition, but that won’t last forever. I seriously would be fired if I pulled crap like this

The skeptical side of me takes this as FD seeing an opporutnity though the demand on the forum to delay the content, and perhaps not being ready to deliver on the promised content, has spun this to delay the release of FCs, which possibly were not going to be ready for the deadline.

This would be outrageous. If this was true maybe someone perhaps could make a video about how exploitative FDEV is with demands and open letters .:sneaky:
