ANNOUNCEMENT Community Update (22/10)

In order to improve your overall experience, we have decided to refocus our efforts on addressing key issues and bugs. Since the launch of the September Update, we've been taking a deeper look at our internal development roadmap, the way in which we utilise public betas, and the content of our next updates.

Here is a summary of our plans:
  • From now and into next year (2020), the updates will focus almost exclusively on addressing recent and longstanding issues, including those reported in the Issue Tracker, ultimately making the game better.
  • We are expecting to have a series of these updates, which will be rolled out (approximately) every three to four months.
  • Each update will also include a public beta that will run prior to the update's release, with a dedicated time to address major issues that appear.
  • The first of these updates will have its public beta in December, with an expectation that the launch will be early in 2020.
As a result of our updated plans, we have made the difficult decision to defer the release of Fleet Carriers. We are now planning for Fleet Carriers to be released in an update in the second quarter of 2020, rather than in December 2019 as previously stated. This will grant us additional time to refine the feature as well as focusing time on addressing existing reported issues. It will also ensure the state of the game is in a better position to introduce Fleet Carriers, that will provide Commanders even more opportunities to interact with the Milky Way. We understand that this delay will be disappointing for some players, but do know that this decision is one that we do not take lightly, and is made with the best interests of the community and game at heart.

Ultimately, we are confident that this will improve the Elite Dangerous experience for all our players.

This better be real this time Will. I have just enough respect for you and Fdev to believe you ONE more time man.

Losing fleet carriers for Christmas, yeah it's a punch, but to me it's a worthy trade off, but only if you are being absolutely serious to fixing the game. But I swear, if this is just a delay tactic... mmmmph, god there is so much I want to say but I know it'll get me banned for typing it.

One more chance Will, one more chance.

People were telling me this morning that fdev should 'just work harder' lol. Enjoy your year of them fixing the bugs other people complained about peeps - you reap what you sow...
Yup, work harder not smarter! Gotta say, I am flipping gutted, was really looking forward to Christmas hols and FCs, but we are where we are I guess. 😢

I think this is fantastic news and the best choice Frontier could make. Focus entirely on existing problems and do not introduce new features that would probably contribute to more unseen problems and create even more frustration for both the developers and Cmdrs.

Each update will also include a public beta that will run prior to the update's release, with a dedicated time to address major issues that appear.

Thank you Frontier for listening!

Happy for them to sort out their Spaghetti Code.
However FD. put us out of misery & tell us the Carrier Buy price & outfitting costs, so we can end the mining grind and get back enjoying the game again.

Look...the people who are gutted by this have every right to be.

For a lot of people, FCS were THE reason to get excited about Elite again.

Some people need more than shooting brain dead npcs in Mobious or mining a lifeless rock to get their kicks.

The truth is those players needed this badly...and now we've just been told its been pushed back so they can do what should have been done years ago.. but not before they shoved ARX in our faces.

If people are ed...dont act surprised.

Everyone taking it well after 25 pages?
Well, I thought of something to complain about - we won't get our next bug fix until NEXT YEAR!!! I was really hoping for patch #4, but I guess I'll just have to deal with rubber-banding and stuttering for a few more MONTHS.... :(

Thanks for the update, Will. I think this is a brilliant move to get the current issues with the game fixed before adding fleet carriers to the mix. And hurrah to you all for bringing back the betas!
I wouldn't call it brilliant. Brilliant would have been doing it after the first delay announcement last year, and I along with ALOT of the major forum posters here gave the "It's ok but fix the game" write ups last year.

Those same people including myself are sitting here going "Why have you been wasting time for the last 9 months, you have a golden opportunity, what are you doing?!?!"

You don't call your kid brilliant when he finally figures out not to pee on the toilet seat. That's "participation trophy" mindset and that's honestly what's screwed up the planet, let alone the game industry, letting people celebrate their incompetence.

Fdev legit screwed up, ok fine, this announcement says they now recognize that and are changing their ways, good... finally.

Now let's get to work fixing it, and Will and Fdev, I've said this over and over, contact me, I am willing to help.

I will not lie this was one of the main reasons I was really hyped for the Elite Dangerous.
I honestly would not cared much if it would have had some small bugs. But all honesty with no December update Elite Dangerous hasn't had no real huge content updates at all in 2019. Everything we have got this year has been I be honest bug fixes, some QoL changes and that is it. No real new content what so ever.

Pushing Fleet carriers into Q2: 1 April – 30 June is yes good thing to have. Less bugs and issues is more welcome, but it does really show how much developing resources has really taken away from Elite Dangerous and placed under other FD projects.

My honest opinion is I rather have buggy content than no content at all. But as decision was already made then nothing much I or anyone else say here really matters. I'm not disappointed not that we get no Fleet Carriers, I'm disappointed we have no content at all this year.

I'm curious what are these bugs that need fixing so badly that it requires a dev team of over 100 people to spend 6 months fixing?

Again, with due consideration that this might involve a refactor, plus they will continue working on other things in the meantime, and accepting there are many unaddressed bugs on the issue tracker, how many are so serious they require such focus?

The skeptical side of me takes this as FD seeing an opporutnity though the demand on the forum to delay the content, and perhaps not being ready to deliver on the promised content, has spun this to delay the release of FCs, which possibly were not going to be ready for the deadline.

You know me (ok, maybe you don't, let's do lunch), but i'm a big fan of ED and have been accused many times of fanboyism, but it all just seems far too conveninent.

In other news, LOL at everyone who spent the last few weeks/months grinding for billions of credits for a FC.

YES. THIS.

I know in my heart this is what's really going on, but you put it into words for me.

Thank you.
