Forum population is... like nothing.

Also the Poll itself forces a binary choice when they aren't binary at all, competition and cooperation aren't mutually exclusive, anyone knows that.

Indeed, I look forward to tomorrows poll;

Which leg do you walk with?

a. Right leg
b. Left leg

Although why wait until tomorrow?

Wow - Cooperate is overwhelmingly leading this poll... I think it's clear the audience playing Elite is rather non-competitive or would prefer to be cooperative, however I certainly don't think competition should be removed from the game entirely.

I recently read an article I think by either LiveScience or PC Gamer that delved into player usernames and a few other statistics. While the whole username part was fairly lame, the part that really caught my attention was the age vs team player aspect; i.e. the younger the gamer the more competitive and self-centered they were, but the older the gamer the more team-centric and more cooperative/less competitive, at least in League of Legends. I wonder how firmly that applies to ED?

There is about 65,000 people registered on these forums.
there are hundreds of thousands of copies of Elite sold. So the members registered on the forums is only a small percentage.
Not everyone registered on these forums are here for Elite either, some enjoy that coaster game.

Only 218 have voted so far.

So, your observation is incorrect.

Also, the poll is unfair and is tied to a loaded question.

In order to compete, you need to cooperate. I'd like to see that happen in a living breathing universe that keeps getting talked about. Give reason and tools to cooperate in game.

Most fun I've had in Elite is cooperating with my friends in a CZ or BHing, or letting newbies in on trade dividends and providing some fire support for them. They're just so stoked. It's adorable.

Well, my apologies then. I'll go ahead and edit my post to be something else.

Interesting. I'd never thought of Elite as competitive (i guess becuase it's never been multiplayer before) so i went co-operative.

Indeed a very loaded question. Almost a way of asking Open or Open PVE, without saying the words? ;-)

I know the OP states that this isn't about PVP vs PVE, but this is actually about PVP vs PVE. Aren't the mods supposed to lock duplicate posts. It's like the PVE Facebook group got together and decided to carpet bomb the forums with "Somebody touched me in inappropriate place in open." I used to come to Elite forums to get away from the crazies in the Star Citizen forum. Now, I just look at my web browser and sigh.

Wait... did you read the OP? Or more accurately, did you see who posted it?

CG wise I do like to get into the top rungs, but that's mainly because I know that means I have made a worthwhile contribution to the overall cooperative effort.

Brain. Think. Broke. Someone. I. My.

Or to put it another way. What are you talking about?

Please, read my opening post. I explain why PvP can be coop and PvE can be compete. While there is an element of both in the topic, its not black and white. Just the poll options are :D

If you saaaay so. ;)

Out of curiosity, which poll option would you choose?

Here's a video I found that's somewhat related to the subject at hand. In it the presenter is discussing PVP in games, but definitely touches on game elements of cooperation vs. competition, and the broader effects they have on the gaming experience.

Whether or not you agree with him, I think he makes some interesting points.

Warning... The video contains foul language.

(Edit: It looks like the spoiler modifier won't encompass the video correctly.)

(Edit, edit: It appears to have been a minor issue with the forums that has been resolved. :p)

I think Corpsealot is a big windbag, alright, but when he talked about annihilating another player and just not getting any real satisfaction or fun from the event, that was exactly me.

I'm skilled enough to kill other players if I go out there with an aim to. I'm just completely underwhelmed by the act and consequently feel intruded upon and annoyed when it's foisted on me. I'd rather permit myself a pve-build ship I'm going to have fun in, and not have to deal with overpowered pvp-fit ships piloted by d-bags who want to foist their underwhelming gameplay on me.

And yet, Elite does not offer a social cooperative experience without the risk of d-bags. No, it's 'be d-bag bait or go solo'. It's a hurtful flaw for the game.

I guess it's not as bad as some pvp-centric games. In Ark players can actually immobilize other players, keep them alive, and feet them dinosaur feces. Now that is d-bag. But is it really so much more d-bag than being able to destroy several hours worth of another player's efforts at a whim in 4-1 gank fests?

Given only the two polar opposites, I voted cooperate with no hesitation. That is my overall stance. Though the real picture is a bit more differentiated. While I cooperate on CGs with all the participants, I still compete for top spot. But I still do not try to take the competion out. Most of the time I just lonewolf though. I like to have a friendly chat here and there, then be on my way again.

Indeed - I want to cooperate with other players to compete against other player groups cooperating as an enemy entity ...

Guilds - turf wars, squabbles over mining rights etc....

- not enough realistic options in the poll....

This ^^^

I like to play coop with my friends, but there needs to be someone or something out there to compete against. The BGS is fun and all, but meaningless unless it's attached to a player base somehow. Wars can be a fun way to spend an afternoon or twelve.

I don't know how many 1v1 PvP "fights" I've been in where we set rules such as 10% hull or retract weps to end the fight. Those are sort of coop and sort of competition. Some of our preset fights to the "death" can also be coop as some of these are for training or just killing time.

What I don't care for are the unprovoked attacks that can happen when a vastly superior ship or gang of ships take(s) on a weak one. There doesn't seem to be any sport in that at all.

The sport is for the weak one, not the attackers. It's fun escaping from "superior forces." I had to learn how to dock my ship, how power play worked, and how to land on planets. Similiarly, I've had to learn how to escape from a bad situation. Preparation and planning. I don't fly around in a barely functioning spaceship and expect to live. Still, sometimes you lose, but you can't win all the time.

I won't vote to this one.

I would actually prefer to cooperate, but the current game content offers no challenge, therefore I see no reason to wing up other than grinding credits / merits faster. This is boring to me.
Give us big badass opponents impossible to take down on 1:1 and Pvp cooperation would be awesome. I doubt we will have this by the end of the season.
And as for the implementation of some kind of guilds mechanism + instancing improvement, which would lead to some battles of several wings of commanders...I won't even dream about that to happen.

Now I spend 90% of my time seeking PvP fights. I seek to get my bu*t kicked, learn from my mistakes and get better and better. I love it. Yet, I still can't vote for "compete".
And, PvEwise, we already have a "compete" game with PowerPlay which is grindy and boring as F*CK, especially after nearly a year without any tweak / revamp of its mechanisms.
