Competitive building game brainstorm group

Hello again, sorry! I only just read the entire thread to catch up on it all, I didn't realise that we were not supposed to use blue prints, Are shelters and exhibit shells considered as blue prints? also does the build have to be complete by the time we submit? as I am likely to keep going with this build as it gets more complex. This might mean I am disqualified!
Build time just less than a week, over 20 animals

Hello! I might be too late entering this rainforest house comp but here is my screen shot entry. I am keen to be involved in future build comps organised by players on here. I miss the build comps that were posted on announcements! I was actually going to create a post myself about doing this type of thing so Villanelle if you want help keeping this game/comp afloat I am on board!
Heres my submission :)

Outdoor viewing of the pangolin (still inside the tropical house but the larger green house room) not my fave view of the building and still needs work.

Build time just less than a week, over 20 animals. This building also has a Testudine area over the other side still under construction, which includes terrapins and tortoise walkthroughs. There is also access to the larger reptiles over the other side but there was a photo limit on this post..... There is also a snake room which is under construction too and more invertebrates. I still want to add another mammal or something else unusual if anyone has any ideas what might make a nice addition?!

Possible reasons I may be disqualified!...

Did the build have to be complete by the time we submit? as I will add more to this in the future.
No worries if I am, I should have read the thread through more carefully!
This is gorgeous!!! Thanks for joining us!

No worries, this is the first round so we're still figuring everything out. Please submit by end of tomorrow (in whatever time zone you're in) - it doesn't have to be finished but we'll just score it at whatever point it is at when you submit. Of course you're welcome to keep working on it and showing us what it becomes but it won't be part of the competition.

I'm going to make a post too pool all our ideas for the future of the competition so please check below and let us know your thoughts and ideas :)

Awesome! I'm so happy that the little comps are coming back in this way :)
How do I submit officially? Does my earlier comment with screenshots count as a submission or do I need to submit somewhere else?
Thankyou! :)

Heyo everyone! Important post incoming!

The first round of the competition is almost up - please submit your final builds by end of day tomorrow (Wednesday) for whatever time zone you're in.
If you'd like one more day, let us know here asap and we'll keep you in.

You can submit:

  • screenshots
  • google doc folders
  • videos
  • google slides
  • other?
The more images you share, the better we'll all be able to see and judge your build! Please be careful not to share any personal details or data.

On to business! Here's a google form to collect the details of your submission for this round, as well as your preferences and ideas for what the competition rules should be going forwards.
This form will not share any personal information - email addresses are not required and mine is hidden. It will ask for your forum member name so I can match up answers to users.

Something we haven't discussed yet is judging, so there are some ideas and options in the form as well as space for you to write your own ideas.

Hope you're all looking forward to flaunting your beautiful builds and sharing your ideas for the next round!

Hope the above post answers your question :) You can use the screenshots you already shared if you like, or if you add to your build before the deadline you can submit new screenshots and we'll use those. Looks so good so far, I love it!

Awesome guys, can't wait for tomorrow! On Thursday I'll post here with the survey results and we'll go with the majority results on the rules.

I'll also collect all our entries in one google folder and share it in a couple of threads to collect more votes (or would you prefer to keep it just within this group? Should've thought of that question for the form 🫠)

I would limit the voting stuff to this thread, it seems a better way as this thread is active enough with a good amount of people and prevents any bloat in other threads if this is a reoccurring competition.

Honestly about to call it quits myself. I am having issues filling the spaces between paths because I can't fit staff paths underneath them to make additional habitats even though there is enough head room. I can't move the upper paths higher as there is already the Caiman habitat built and it would mess it all up. I could go at it from the side through the walls but I didn't intend for it to be built like that. I am no longer enjoying working on it. I did manage to add Galapagos Tortoises, a Butterfly Walkthrough, and Boa Constrictors though.
Sorry it got frustrating :( Would you like to submit the screenshots you sent so far?

Couple of Qs for this group:

Blueprints
Majority vote so far is to allow them, but someone raised a good question about these being your own blueprints, prefabs or ones from the steam workshop. What do you all think?

I'd lean towards only allowing your own blueprints personally but keen to hear everyone's thoughts. If we were keeping a time limit, I don't think they should be allowed because you could prebuild parts of your design before starting the clock, but most people are voting for no time limit* so that's okay.

*By time limit I mean a strict number of hours like we were going to have and then decided to scrap because it's a bit crazy and unfair to people who build more slowly / are perfectionists. I don't mean timeframe, as in number of weeks each round of the competition should run.

Scoring
Most people are voting so far for a score-chart style voting system. I've made a mock-up of one here, if you're able to take a look and share thoughts / ideas / concerns / feedback please go ahead :) just to be clear this is an example, not a real score chart.

This might change as more people submit responses but we've had a few in already so thought I'd start getting prepared!

Yeah agree, im okay with own blueprints being allowed if time is unlimited, but would refrain from using workshop ones since it defeats the point of a building competition a little.
And for timed stuff no blueprints should be allowed, since again it kinda defeats the point.

The scoring example seems nice to me. All the categories make perfect sense and i cant really think of another to add honestly.

I already know of a certain someone featuring a velociraptor profile picture with atrocious animal welfare in his build :D

Thanks Marvin :) really helpful.

I'm excited to see your build! Thought I'd throw in something for the animals as an option for the categories, since it is an animal game after all! But we didn't discuss that previously so happy to remove / ignore for this round. It's all a bit of a test round really but I'm glad it seems to be fun for peeps so far.

Nah it can totally stay!
Since i only play sandbox i always turn wellfare of and ignore it :D
I actually took a look at husbandry manuals provided by zoological societys to see how big real zoo enclosures for these animals are, which results in habitats half the size Planet Zoo wants them to be, and with alot of clutter and decor added there isnt much of the traverseable area left :D

You should see my anteater’s. 💀

Looks like I'll be selling a bunch of critters for a while. My zoo has gone from 180k to 60k money over the last few days of building rofl. I'll have to let it run for a while with no building so that the money coming in isn't taken via money going out rofl.

I did think you were very brave to do this competition in a franchise zoo! If you need to spam money, exhibits are the answer, espesh butterflies - they rake in the cash because guests love them and they breed fast so you can autosell large amounts of them quickly. For this competition I've set up a sandbox zoo just called 'competition zoo' - it's pretty soulless! But lets me focus just on the builds for this purpose and not need to worry about keeping my most loved zoos afloat. I love playing franchise though :)

Oh also in my google sheet linked below in my signature I've done a cost-to-appeal analysis, meaning you can check how much money a habitat animal brings in (via donations for its appeal) compared to the food costs for its upkeep. Your giant pandas, gharials and such will probably be losing you money overall. Sometimes tough decisions have to be made to keep a franchise alive! The highest scoring animals are quokkas, kiwis and thompson's gazelles. Might not suit your current set up but thought I'd mention it in case it helps.
