Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

Are other modern 3D games you're currently playing running OK enough?

Not sure how modern they are but I'm currently playing Skyrim on mostly high settings with about 30 mods and it's smooth, also I play F1 2013 which again is fine.

Are there background processes hogging the machine?
With what settings are you trying to run E: D?

Could you download and run a benchmark like 3DMark11, then post your results here?

Well, if anyone wants to run ED you need vastly better specs than I have.

Win 7 Home Premium 64bit
8gb DDR3
Asus Nvidia 650 GTX
Athlon II 620 X4 (quad core 4x 2.6ghz)

I've been getting ultra low fps in the alpha (2-6fps!!) and in my ticket I've been told my system 'barely meets' the required specs.

I cannot tell you how ****ed off I am, the wife and I scraped and saved to get me in the alpha, a new PC is not in our budget, not even remotely. If I come across as angry, sorry but I am, we dropped £200 into a game I cannot play.:mad::mad:

Well..

As other posters have said before, something is not right. Yes, your GPU is a weakling but people have reportedly run ED alpha (ok, 1.0) with a freaking netbook...

Now, you are either selecting setting far above what your system can handle - anything at or above 1680x1050 with high effects - or your system has something holding it back.

Deffo something wrong somewhere. Just out of interest i tried running ED on my Lenovo PC at work which had no GFX card at all and managed 2 - 4 fps.
Popped in an old GeForce 9600 (which has a G3D mark of 750) and it runs fairly smoothly with the settings on low (no MP though, curse you company firewall) Your 650 gtx is rated around 1800 so should have no real problem.

This might be a case where both CPU & GPU being quite near the limit for "running E: D Alpha reasonably well" makes your PC really struggle. If you look at the Elite: Dangerous Alpha - User System Specs spreadsheet, you find one user with GTX 640 running 1280x720 @ 60FPS vsynced (low settings) / 30FPS vsynced (high settings), but he has a powerful processor (i7-4770K). Too bad the folks with Intel Q6600 (according to PassMark, very similar performance as your X4 620) have not reported their FPS, they seem to have very good GPUs.

My advice - try 1280x720 resolution and low settings first (object draw distance and shadows combined with anti-aliasing are my prime suspects for resource hogging), remember to put everything in Nvidia control panel to Application controlled / off / low(est) setting for elitedangerous.exe

Thanks, I'd just like to mention although my desktop is 1680x1050 I don't run ED in full screen mode, I play it in windowed mode with the window size set in-game to 1600x900 but okay, I'll try making the window smaller.

Thanks

I think his CPU may be the bottleneck here. I looked up your motherboard and it will support the FX processors. Which are faster than what you currently have. Some of the are pretty cheap now. I think the FX4100 is down to $100 or less. Maybe between now and the estimated date of ED's release you could save up enough to get one. Maybe some one here has something they could give you or sell you cheap. We have some pretty nice people on ED. I've seen them do some stuff like that since I've been here. I don't have anything, I'm on disability. Don't give up yet mate. Good luck.

Windowed mode can cause some games to run slow. Not sure if that would be the case for Elite though.

Trying running at 1280x720 on low settings as has been suggested.
