Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

I just tried it on 1280x720 full screen mode like suggested.

I have to say it was quite a bit better until someone joined (or I joined them?) and suddenly the fps plummeted into low single figures again. Tried several different scenarios, 1 worked ok and 2 were ok until another commander appeared then it went into slideshow mode.

on a side note its my bday next month and I was getting £100 from the wife for a Saitek X52 just for ED, maybe I should go without that now and use the money for an upgrade.. but which do you spend the £100 on.. cpu or gpu?

although tbh, I had set my heart on the flightstick.. :(

Good to see you got the Alpha running at acceptable speeds. Other players seem to cause slowdowns, in the worst (or best, depends :)) case you happened to be chosen as the session host, undoubtedly putting more strain on your CPU - your (and the others') internet connection may have been at least part of the cause, as could the networking code too - roll out Alpha 3.0 & we'll see how much things improve.

What is your broadband speedtest results on speedtest.net?

Here we go.

That should be fine.
Unusually good ping for such below average broadband figures.

Well, that depends on how far he is from a speedtest server (and his connection, ofc). I guess 21ms is nothing special, though not necessarily bad.

Although it is quite likely that his ping to other players will be worse than that.

My ping is twice as high as his, but I have twice as much download and upload speed. My distance was around 100miles from server his around 150miles, according to what speedtest says anyway.

Hello
I'm putting together pc for ED and would like some input. I'm not weather to go amd new apu 7850k see how ed runs and if I need throw in GPU or go i5 4570 and then get GPU......my thinking is the apu should be able to handle ED flat out with 8-16 gig ram.....but still not sure.

Any constructive advice........

From the various threads that I have read and the spreadsheet of alpha testers machines, the i5 will run it with no trouble. If you already have this cpu then just wait for the beta to come out and see what people say then. I will initially be using an i7 with onboard gfx which in my opinion will be good enough for medium settings at least. With the gfx being the bottleneck, I guess that the i5 would give similar results.

don't know what all the fuss is about ... I have had my double sided double density twin drives serviced ... my BBC model B cleaned and ready to go ... can anyone tell me how many floppy discs it comes on as I think downloading on my modem might take too long :D

Thank you.
Digging out my 'Rubber Specci ' as I write.

Hey all just want to say a big thank you to all the guys, (too many to mention, that and I was worried I'd miss someone) who helped me with the choices I made for my new computer.

After finding out it was hardly likely I could play the Beta I signed on for I had to think what to do. I had noticed my art and Photoshop work were straining my computer anyway, so this was no surprise. But when it came to thinking about a new computer, taking the route, of building my own was, it seemed the best way to go. However I'd never done it before and was somewhat daunted by the task.

However with the help of so many knowledgeable folk here, and a contact from my photographing buddies, I was able to put together my system this morning. Its a monster compared to the little thing I had before, and it goes like a bomb. So really looking forward to using it for my work in Photoshop and drawing, let alone gaming when it comes to the Beta.

So thanks guys, I'd mention you all by name, but for fear of missing someone out, so you know who you are and I am very grateful for the help. And when you see me playing in the Beta, make sure you give us a shout out, that I am there at all, is down to your help. Thank you all.

Great to hear, Arbanax. So glad you got your new system running. Wasn't so painful after all, was it ? ;)

After upgrading to 3.01 my fps are far better.

from 0.7-4 fps on all low settings ie:- slideshow and totally unplayable

to 17-25 fps inside the space station, 30fps+ when in space even on a mix of medium and high settings!

No idea what they changed but all of a sudden its totally playable on my system :D

I have an AMD FX 4350 based machine with a Radeon R9 280X Toxic edition graphics card.
The cpu is overclocked at 4.7 Ghz and the R9 is overclocked at 1200/1800 for the gpu and GRAM.
I have 8 Go of memory Gskill Ripjaws.
The motherboard is an Asrock 990 FX Etreme 4 .
This rig works on Windows 8.1 64 bits edition.
The alpha 1.1 works perfectly smooth on this rig.
The upcoming premium beta should work , i guess.

Ebuyer are currently selling the Intel 320 (40GB) ssd for £20. I was going to get one for my server and wondered whether it would be worth having one for E: D.
If the game was loading levels/maps I could see it being well worth it but I'm not sure how much that applies to E: D? Perhaps the Galaxy Map would see benefits?

Sorry Steve, what spec machine is this on?

Reason I ask is I'm predicting/hoping my 5yr old machine is going to play this game fine... Just wondering if anyone's experience is going to give a pointer to this prediction/hope.
