Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

Hi,

I'm looking at buying a new desktop PC to run Elite Dangerous, been on a DELL Inspiron 530 for the last 7 years which isn't going to be able to run it (good excuse for a new PC  ), with Elite Dangerous due out, its the first game in years since the FFE/X games that has got my interest as I go back to the original Elite game on the BBC Model B. So looking around for a new PC for home use which can also run Elite Dangerous at decent levels without costing a fortune.

I've just seen a Dell XPS 8700 which is heavily discounted with what looks like a really good spec, the only thing I'm note sure of is the Graphics card, so wondering if anyone else is running is a similar spec who can let me know what they think before I buy:

Processor
4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4770 Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.9 GHz)

OS
Windows 8.1 (64Bit)

Video Card
AMD Radeon HD R9 270 2GB GDDR5

Memory
32GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz - 4 DIMMs

Hard Drive
3TB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive 6.0 Gb/s + 256GB SSD

Optical Drive
Blu-ray Combo Drive (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)

I can get this for £810, been looking at some custom build sites like DinoPC and they cannot get near the price for similar components.

Thanks for any advice.

Nothing wrong with an R9 270, very solid mid-range card. You should be vsync locked in most areas of the game, expect a bit lower FPS in heavy combat areas and planetary rings.
Good price on that setup.

Even planetary rings do not cause me any issue. :D

Interesting. Perhaps some optimisations have been done on planetary rings since the Premium Beta? Now I'm going to have to go and find out :)

At Hathor I get 60FPS while at Asellus I get 45-50FPS with all settings maxed out.

Lol well I have never had an issue, all through Beta... For some people it could be older drivers.

Can you back it up with a video? Because on paper, there's no way you'll be getting better FPS.
You're drawing double the number of pixels (2560*1600 vs 1920*1080) on a GPU that's less than half as powerful with half the vRAM.
Going from 1920*1080 to 2560*1600 is guaranteed to almost halve your FPS, so yeah, colour me sceptical.

6850 vs 7870 (XT is 7870 +10-20%) - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1077?vs=1034
FX-8150 vs i5-3570K - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/434?vs=701

Spec - i5-3570K, Z77X-UD3H, 16GB RAM, X210 128GB, 7870XT, 1920*1080

I am not surprised you are having issues on an I5...

Ok, atleast now I know where you're coming from....
In every gaming benchmark i5 trumps FX-8150, CPU scaling review - http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7970_CPU_Scaling/2.html

Just done a quick video on my phone... I will post it later. So watch this space!!! I was in front of the sun close up with everything looking good, spinning around also, so you can see what I get to see in game. And it is nice... If you are having issues, check settings and so fourth you know the drill...

We were talking about planetary rings causing some FPS loss, everywhere else is fine.

come on where is this Video ........ I am about to buy a rig and stuck between choosing

8350
8350 clocked
4690
4690 clocked
4790
4790 clocked

When ever I decide that a i5 4690 will be fine, I read that coolers and clocking offers so much more .... but then if E : D makes use of multicores/threads, then the 8350 or i7 .... ARRRRRRGH

Acer Aspire 5742g any chance?

Hi there!

One question which I already regret lol

Could I possibly run the game on the lowest of low settings on an Aspire 5742G laptop:

i5-480M @2,67GHZ
Nvidia GT 540M
8GB DDR3 1333Mhz

Thanx in advance

That's simple if you can afford an i7 go for it, otherwise it is an i5. During A3 both i5 and i7 were better than FX8350 according to the posted information by the owners of FX8350, i5 and i7. If you are planning to OC then choose 4690or 4790K. And yes, ED uses all 8 threads of 4-core i7s.

I wonder how a 1230v3 would fare, it's locked, has 200MHz lower clock speed than a 4690 but it is hyperthreaded.

Well that was simple .... i7 then :D

well alright seeing that I am here

GTX780 vs r9 290 ?

the GTX is faster at the moment ... but future proofing, as games get more dependant on rendering in GPU memory ... is the 4GB 290 better .... mantle ????

I'm running the game on high spanning 3 monitors right now with no issues:

Intel 4770K (OC 4.4 Ghz)
Corsair H80i
2x EVGA GTX660 (SLi AFR1)
AsRock Fatal1ty Professional
Corsair HX750 PSU
32gb Corsair vengence RAM 1800Mhz
Samsung 840 256Gb SSD
Crucial C4 128GB SSD
OCZ 60GB SSD
6x Seagate 7200 RPM 2TB HDDs

I also have a x52 Pro, Logitech G13, Logitech G19, and Razer Naga that I use to control various aspects of the game.

Yes it is water cooled, and since I needed lots of drive space it is in a NXZT Phantom 630 ultra tower case. It's actually pretty spiffy, No airflow problems at all, my GPU's only hit 70c under full load, and the processor stays around 50c under full load Using AIDA 64. But I have to clean the vents weekly as I have a dog that sheds all the time.

I got all the old drives from a Data Center I used to work at when it shut down. I have backups for days.

Im hitting around 26 when im running a few things with my Zalman fan... Totally recommend them, however you have to keep them clean. ;)

When I have windows loaded, with nothing else running, Im hittin around 14 degrees.

have you tried checking temps with AIDA 64 that's what I use to benchmark my cooling. It throws every single instruction your CPU and GPU can process all at once from the time you hit start to the time you hit stop.

I will check out those fans, I'm in the market for 3-4 new case fans see if I can drop the temps even cooler.

But I do like how quiet the case is with the stock case fans.

Wow 13c on a fan cooler is very impressive, mine idles at about 30c but I have a lot of programs running in the background.

I ran an Aida stress test and here are the charts, the rise was going up to 80c under 100% CPU load, so I blew out the radiator quick with some compressed air and the second set is the redone test where it hung out around 70c on full CPU load. I'll post an image of what it looks like while in game a bit later, taking a break for now. but the temps are no where near as high, except for maybe the GPUs hover around 70ish sometimes.

Also sorry for hijacking the thread.

What are my chances of playing on a Intel Core i3 4130 3.40 GHz 3M?

It is only dual core, but four threads.

Any chance.

Otherwise what CPU upgrade would I need (socket 1150)?

Pretty big depending on your GPU and provided you'll be fine with 20-30 fps or reduced resolution/detail.
