Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

Hmm.

So after the great waterspill treagedy of 2013, I have a used vid card and am wondering if it will run Elite Dangerous. Its a Nvidia GT 520 1 gig card.

Apparently its on the low end of the vid card spectrum, being comparableto most 512 cards, but I have no idea. Can't test it until I get my mobo and cpu. Anybody have any ideas? Should I save for a new card? (which could be a while since I'm still saving for that darned MOBO.)
You'll definitely need a new card. DeMangler has tested Alpha with a GT450M, which (according to Passmark) is almost twice as powerful as GT520, and he got 20 FPS at 1366x768 on Low settings.

The best anyone can do is watch the trends that occur & keep an eye open for a bargain. Thankfully, they do sometimes happen.
I keep hoping to see that with RAM, as the RAM I bought a year ago (which I'd quite like to double) has doubled in price since then. Unlikely though, I expect - DDR3 seems to be in demand for some strange reason.

Aww man. A new CPU/Mobo AND a vid card? This game is going to bankrupt me. :(

Thanks for the info!

Precisely my fear after reading a bit more about the system requirements for ED!

Following my earlier post wondering if my current weedy system had a chance in hell of running ED, I've had a bit of a result over the Xmas holiday - turns out my younger brother has recently built himself a pretty much cutting-edge new system and now that it's running stable is happy to give me the previous motherboard, CPU, graphics card and RAM ... just as well, as my Xmas bonus turned out to be smaller than expected!

The motherboard is by Gigabyte with 12GB of RAM on it plus an i7 quad core CPU (he did say which, but I was so blown away with techno-lust I can't remember the specific model) and a beast of a GeForce video card (likewise). Point is, kit far in advance of what I've currently got ...

It's not cutting edge as the whole lot comes from a system he built 18 months to 2 years ago, but that's fine by me as it's in a different league to my current Core2 chip and GeForce 8800GT ... all it's cost me is the price of a kosher copy of Windows 8 and a new ATX case plus a couple of extra case fans, as the video card is a bit bigger than normal and won't fit in the case of my current system.

Have just bought one of these little beauties: Corsair Carbide 200R

So, all bar any delivery delays while the postal service grinds back into action after Christmas, I'll be ED-ready by next weekend :D

New computer

Hi all, I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas.

I am now looking for a new PC. We still don't seem to have any hard guidelines about Min specs for ED so I'll assume it won't be anything ridiculous.

I would LOVE to say money is no object, but of course it is.... it always is, I'm lucky as I can say 'I want good value rather than cheap'

SOOOO, what I need to find out is, what is god VFM at the moment? so not cutting edge any more, but also good for a couple of years, and where It's available from?

Anyway, if you have a few minutes to give this a little thought please let me know any ideas and suggestions....... ta.

The first rule I always make is - Set your Budget. :)

Honestly you're going to get a pile of replies here, but they're all speculative unless we know how much you can afford to spend.

That's a difficult question to answer without an upper limit and some description of what you want. Best answer I could give would be to go to a couple of sites and 'configure' what you want vs. what you can afford. Play with it until you find the best compromise. I've had really good luck with www.cyberpowerpc.com. They have a number of negative reviews, but I've purchased 3 systems from them and had no problems. Generally, I've found they can build it for about 200.00 (U.S.) more than I could do it myself by ordering components. They still have a good tool to see what's out there and what's compatible with what, even if you don't buy from them. www.ibuypower.com is another decent configuration tool

If you do go the 'do it yourself' route, a good source is www.pricewatch.com

your best bet will be to wait until the gamma phase is there.
only then it becomes clear what min spec are.
but then again it may change with the release of the planetary landings.

in space there are only few objects to calculate in comparison to surface.
not to mention transparencies and reflection.

so don,t go for min spec,s
because I suspect they will go up! in time.

Thanks for all the info so far guys.

I'm not going to go for a min spec machine as I'd want it last a little while at least.

I think the biggest problem is that there is TOO much choice at the moment, and there is of course contrary opinions out there. There is also the uber techie info.

Budget is of course the big one...... £1200 or there abouts, I can spend a bit more if it would make a significant difference. I'm happy to build it myself. I found http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/ to check compatibility

Motherboard MSI Z87-G55 or Asustek Maximus Hero, 8 or 16 GB of ram (1600 or 1866 or 2133 MHz) Corsair Vengeance or GSkill Ripjaws, CPU Intel I7, 4670K or 4770K. For the graphics card, wait for the gamma specifications. With these components, you have a solid starting point which will last at least 5 years, at minimum.

Hi, I'm in the process of looking at parts for a PC build for Elite as well. I could afford a build at the same price as you but I'm going slightly cheaper so I can factor in another monitor, an Occulus Rift or something else if I decide later.

Also using PcPartPicker and got a first draft here : http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/2oqK0

I'm looking to build something which runs Elite at max settings and obviously its quite difficult to plan without much info on specs. I don't want to under-build but then again I don't want to over-build either!
I'm in no rush at the moment (signed up for standard beta) but was going to start gathering more specific advice in January\February.
Hoping for more info on specs either from Frontier or a community consensus in the next few months!

I've read (and seen) that those types of CPU cooler may require low-profile RAM (it's very close to the DIMM slots).

I'll work through partpicker, and come up with my selections soon, maybe we can chat about our options
