Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

Hi all,

I bought the Beta yesterday to use on this system :-

  • Abit IL9 Pro
  • 4 GB Memory
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
  • EVGA e-Geforce GTX 750 Ti

So far I'm finding it playable around 30fps average although it does dip quite a bit lower around/inside stations to about 15-20fps. This is with the graphical settings on 1920*1080, and High Settings but with Shadows and Anti-Aliasing both disabled.

I'll probably end up buying a new motherboard/cpu/memory bundle in the end but the GTX 750 Ti is a brilliant graphics card which has probably helped me get some extra life out of this aging PC. :)

my system, I hope I can run the game at max.

Win 7 64 bit
mb: Gigabyte 990fxa-ud7
cpu: amd fx-8350 8-core 4 ghz
Ram: 16 gb Corsair 1333mhz (need to upgrade to faster mhz)
Vid: 2X Gigabyte GTX660OC 2048 mb Gddr5 (soon to upgrade, dang expensive when buying in pairs)
SSD: Corsair Force GS 128 gb (operating system only, need to upgrade to 250gb)
Hdd: Two 1 TB WD Blues (like these better than black, one platter vs two platter).
PS: 850W Antec true power quattro (getting a little old but still awesome)
case: Antec Dark Fleet Full Tower Gaming Case 8 fans.
Monitor: Acer 27" 1080p
:S

In case it helps when deciding what to upgrade:

4 GB Memory
i3-3220 3.3ghz (dual core but 4 threads)
Geforce GTX 750 Ti (2gb)

1920*1200, settings on high with default AA (FXAA?), no bobblehead, no lensflare.

30-60fps. So getting on for double with the main difference apparently being the cpu.

Ah thanks for that information taotoo.

I think I'll wait until the next generation of CPUs arrive, hopefully, leading to price drops on existing ones because I want to invest in a bit of future proofing.

On the multi-thread cpu question:

I am running an i7 950 in my system. Because of current pricing trends on Ebay I could buy a x5650 (6 core Xeon CPU) and sell my 950 for (almost) zero dollar outlay.

Now obviously there is my time involved but am wondering if adding 2 more cores (as well as having a chip that uses less power) would be of benefit in playing Elite Dangerous?

I wonder if i can run elite on max with this
Asrock, Z97M Anniversary
Intel, Core i3-4160 (3.6GHz, 3MB Cache, LGA1150)
Kingston, 8GB, DDR3, 1600MHz, CL10(why not 9 ;[), Kit of 2, HyperX Fury Black
MSI, GeForce GTX 750 Ti, 2GB GDDR5, OC

I can run it on my machine (see sig) with max settings, generally at 60fps (vsync'd). It will only drop down to high 30s/40s when around complex stations or action.

Your more modern CPU will only improve on this.

I'm only looking at google but his i3 is dual core and I believe yours in quad core.
well i3 is 2 actual cores 2 logical so 4 cores as far as ED is concerned and intel core 2 quad series are not very well optimized they are kinda 2, 2core scpus glued togeather, but if he gets 60 to high 30fps im gonna be just fine

i3-3220 3.3ghz
4gb
Exact same GPU

30-60fps everything on max (no lens flare or bobblehead) at 1920*1200.

Hi all, just after a bit of reassurance. I'm currently part way through building my first rig just for ED. I'm in my mid forties and haven't owned a desk top for over ten years.
I've done some homework and currently have an Asus Z97 Pro motherboard, 8gb corsair 1600mhz ram, Sapphire R9 290 Tri x graphics card and an Evga 1000w PSU. Will soon be be getting (funds dependant) Intel i7 4790 CPU. My question is will this setup run ED ok?

I am running way less hardware than what you are considering and so far I am not having a problem (beta bugs aside) running Elite.

Just to compare my system:

P6X58D-E
i7 950 (stock speed - 3.06)
12gb Corsair Dominator 1600Mkz DDR3
HiS R9 270 (NOT an X) video

Up until the latest 1.04 beta I was running a SOLID 60fps (vert sync on) and even in stations or near a fair amount of ships I seldom dropped to 45fps. And yes, that is at 1920x1080P

So yah, no sweat with the specs you are proposing.

Better thank ok. :)

Hi guys, been a member on here for a while and finally buying the beta on wed.
My question is will my current rig run ED ok.
FX6300 cpu
GTX 560
8gb ram,
600w OCZ modxstream pro PSU.
Good strike x gaming case. (lots of case fans).

i am hoping for medium settings at least until my MSI twin fozr R9 280 oc
and another 8gb ram arrives next week.

I just wanna jump straight in to the game and not have to wait for my upgrades arriving.
I hope with the new GPU and extra ram i can get high settings.

Depends on how you define ok & what is your resolution (& GPU RAM amount).

I'd hazard a quess that @1080P MED preset should be ok with your current HW. Lowering shadow quality, debris amount, draw distance, bloom etc. may help if for example the single player scenarios stutter. Only way to be sure is to try it. :)

I don't think that extra RAM will have an effect, 8 GB is plenty at this stage.

thanks for advice, my current gtx 560 has 1gb of vram, I will be running at 1080p on my lg tv.
My new r9 280 has 3gb of vram, when it arrives next week.
I am installing the extra 8GB ram now as I have a package for Star Citizen too.
And will be playing little bits of that as it progresses.
