Computer feminization

In a world where we have to have a male voice, can it be James Earl Jones please?

Oooh, can I have Brian Blessed?

In fact, I want a Brian Blessed bobblehead to match!

The OP is "crying foul" because a female voice is used and completely ignores the steps Frontier has taken to include females in the game equal to their male counter parts by pointing out an irrelevant voice actor as being sexist and "pandering to the lowest common denominator".

Actually if you read his later arguments it turns out he just has a problem with women in general and he wasn't actually arguing from the feminism camp.

Which was uncomfortable.

I believe the real reason we went for a woman was that we couldn't afford Matt Berry, and after imagining him in that role no other man would do.

Do a new kick starter just for this. Please!

I would pay well to have Matt Berry do some voices!

One of the reward levels could be that there will be an Easter egg of him shouting "FATHEEEEEEERRRRRRR!!!"

I'm fascinated by this thread. Firstly because it's a beta and nothing is "fixed" tho I agree with the OP in as much as there should be an option for both, it really wouldn't bother me if the voice was male female or neutral.

For me the question of "pandering" for the wrong reasons is more about individual perceptions than actual reality. If you are irritated by female voices you will notice them more.

While there are a lot of female voiced computers across ALL media, there are also many many male voices for computers too. With regards to it being inappropriate, I guess that comes down to intent. In movies certainly, the female computer voice tends to be in there to "balance" against the mainly male bias of the characters i.e Star Trek. I grant you that hasn't always been the case, but tends be getting better. Certainly in the original Star Trek series "where no MAN had gone before" the computer had a male voice.

Has the computer been feminised? Or does it simply have a female sounding voice? I know men who on the phone have a soft voice that could be called female and equally a few women with quite a deep tone to their voice. So I'm not sure judging anything or indeed anyone by their voice would, in my opinion, be sensible.

It is an interesting subject and certainly worth debate and I completely support the OP in hoping Frontier have an option for male, female and NO vocal response.

I understand what you're saying however many studies have been done in both the military and aviation, and male and female pilots respond better to a female voice providing alerts than to a male one.

Hence why Siri is predominantly female.

It's (sexistly / misogynistically called) 'Bitchin' Betty' in combat aircraft.

Personally, I can't stand male computer voices.

I can absolutely back this up. I've seen similar studies. It's believed that a female voice transmits more clearly over a radio broadcast.

And whilst we're on the subject of females. Just thank god you are not in the crosshairs of a female drone pilot. Studies have shown they respond considerably faster to a "shoot to kill" order than their male counterparts ;-)

I think they should do a voice pack based on Dad's Army.

Just imaging boosting into a wall and Captain Mainwaring's voice saying: You stupid boy!

:D

Yeah, the computer-chick gimmick is getting old.

I personally would like something akin to CABAL from the C&C series.

Could it be that we refer to ships as females, in the UK (And I presume the US?)?

"Arrrr, there she blows."

Ergo, the ships' computer could be implied to be female.

Now I'm not here to argue whether we should or should not apply gender to objects (which although we do not do in English, they do in French... what is interesting here is that the French word for ship is Navire... which is masculine!!)
