Console Update

They are already unable to fix easy old bugs reported on the issue tracker since many years and that is sad to see that they are even unable to release EDO for the console.
I do not know how they manage the game development but it seems that they do not put the priority on the good tasks.
It is like there is only one person working on the code. They are adding features while existing features are not working properly.

My favourite part of this thread is how many people believe that this is actually a move to improve the PC experience, rather than a move to free up resources to other more profitable projects.
fdev has other development teams for other projects.
now the players, i am sure of it, will get even better quality updates than before (y)

As someone mentioned, this decision is actually good for the lifespan of Elite. Meaning future DLC will expand the story and core game on one platform, with hopefully less issues. And it can continue growing WITH the evolving PC tech, instead of against it.

I do, however, feel terrible for my console CMDR brothers & sisters, imagining this was the other way around. I love Elite, and I hope those who love it too will keep at it, or make the switch.

Calm down and buy a PC version of the game.
Don't take it out on the game and the developers for not living up to your own hype.
Their own hype for announcing an update on consoles despite having next to no possibility of successfully releasing it in that generation or the next?
To be fair I imagine you could count the Mac Commanders on one hand. But it does beg the question on how many console commanders there are / were- because somewhere someone has done a cost / benefit analysis and found consoles wanting.
Isn’t that the VERY point of this quote? “At first it was just this small group of people I didn’t know or belong to and so it didn’t affect me.”

The twist is typically that it eventually does.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
I hope now Mr Braben that you will reconsider to implement VR in all Odyssey environments because its the "Cherie" that is missing from Cake. It's really looking like half-baked cake the 2D flat screen. It's frustrating and definetely not enjoying experience.

I got my moneys worth. My argument here is only that Fdev has a track record of terrible communication and failure to meet announced goals.

So we agree, judge a game by what’s there. Still, saying you “can’t trust” a dev is hardly dramatic. It’s a clear statement of fact. If anything is trite and redundant to say about Fdev at this point.
You can't 'trust' a dev because so many things can change. I was a KS backer drawn to ED because of proc gen damage models, in depth BGS promises as well as much more detailed ship exteriors (re modules that could be identified on sight). Plans change, stuff goes wrong. It does not knock my trust because I never had much to begin with- not to mention people going crazy thinking a game is some form of mortgage that their life depends on.

Well if it is a move to get resources to more profitable projects good for Fdev

As an elite player and been at it forever and a day (at least 1894) I think 8 yrs gaming and paid fdev £40+£30+£30+however much a jack o lantern costs is pretty fair value enterntainment(how much is a sky sports/netflix sub per MONTH! )

And if the servers went off tommorrow I'd drink to the health of my clan mates and hope to see them at some other time in some other game

Please, Don't say that my friend. I'm a huge fan, I take a LOT of heat here in the forum posting your videos, but don't say "it's a shame".
Fdev explained why: single codebase.
Develop for multiple platforms is not easy, and for a live game is even harder. Enter in the details on that would only make things worse.

Now is time to move forward and (at least try) to focus on the good side. Elite will move forward; faster with focous.

Cheers
if you honestly think it'll move faster you are kidding yourself. I guarantee that they haven't even cracked 10 hours on trying to port Odyssey to Console because they effed up so bad on PC release. All their efforts have been shoring up the PC release. Time tables won't move up. They just simply won't have half their player base constantly asking for Console news. And I get that multiple consoles in development is hard but MOST gaming companies do just that. And Fdev chose not only to expand to XB shortly after the PC release but then after a year or two, expand to PS. And finally more MANY of us there is NO moving forward, there is nothing good to focus on and there is no more story!
