Cross-play

Playstation gamers can say goodbye to many future Bethesda titles if Sony continue with their current obstinancy.

A number of us Playstation gamers will be saying goodbye to Sony if Bethesda titles become XBox exclusives. I have a feeling that if this becomes a game of chicken, Sony will swerve first, even if it's by giving an exclusive agreement to Bethesda that is not extended to smaller developers like Frontier.

EDIT

This said, my favorite Bethesda title is Skyrim to this day, which is a single-player game. I don't know if Bethesda is threatening to pull all their future games from Playstation, or just multiplayer games. It also sounds like Starfield, a game I highly anticipate, will be single-player IIRC.

Hmmmm.....

I really hope elite does become cross play more players in open is certainly not a bad thing. Yeah its disappointing sony is being stuck in their ways but it just reminds me why my ps4 collects dust.
The argument over different control imputs is rubbish too, Ive had elite on pc since beta and I still feel the best controls for it is the xbox controller.

It's going further then just MP.

Bethesda has troubles with stubborn Sony since they wanted to give mods to the console communities .

Bethesda has a Grinch towards Sony ever since.

I kinda sympathize with Bethesda

Used to play gears of war 4 with pc players with no real issues...used to meet up every thursday night fer a couple hours of insane horde. Decent guys but dont use their mics and dont talk much, but play together as a team and an effective team at that, they do very well indeed.

I was a pc only player fer 2 deacades before I so much as looked seriously at a console, so fer lifers like me, our xbox history isnt even a third of the actual history. Makes fer a warped perspective sometimes.

Honestly, I think its inevitable...just a matter of time because thats the direction more and more players are leaning towards. Heres a scenario...imagine if say a few years down the line that xbox and pc players are playing together in technical harmony where its not even possible to tell the difference on many more games than the odd one here and there as it is now.

While everyone would love our ps bros could come and join the party, the man from del monte says no. They holding up progress and when ye been around a few years, ye learn a valuable lesson in the way this world works. Progress can only be delayed, it cant and wont be stopped. Sooner or later, what we talk about being cool today will be reality a few years down the line.

If someone had said to me when I was a young man that in my lifetime I would hold in my hand a small wafer thin device that could scan, take videos and pictures, hold videe conversations with people on the other side of the planet, from almost anywhere on the planet...Id have laughed at ye and joked about ye watching too many Star Trek movies...nowadays, any 3 year old can amuse themselves on an iPad half the day.

The world is changing and changing fast and many are trying to dig their heels in and resist in their own unique ways...this is how sony is doing it as they hold out fer their share of the market...cos lets face facts, that is why sony are holding out...money. Oh its likely a whole bucket of w2orms more complex than that, but from my perspective, I see them as holding everyone else back.

Maybe its time to move forward without sony and just leave them behind...that being their own choice in the end. What the players choose after that would depend on where the money follows ergo where the best and most popular games go. Platform loyalty? In this day and age when consoles close the gap between pc and themselves year in year out? All very noble...and blindly naive.

I think its simply a matter of time...technically we are about as there as its gonna get already on some games...next few years will tell a tale just hope I can last long enough to see it ^

Playstation gamers can say goodbye to many future Bethesda titles if Sony continue with their current obstinancy. Bethesda are pushing buttons now and have stated quite clearly that unless Sony change their tack on crossplay, future support for the console will be limited at best...

Its interesting they are pushing it for Legends (a card game?) but, not Fallout '76. I wonder why? :)

Update (Aug. 14): In a similar discussion with Eurogamer, Hines says that the kind of cross-platform play/progression that is "absolutely critical" for Elder Scrolls Legends is not as pertinent for a game like Fallout 76. "Fallout 76, sure: it would be nice if I could play on my Xbox and my kid is playing on his PC and we can play together, but if we can't, OK. There's lots of games—I play Overwatch on Xbox and he plays on PC separately and has a whole separate account. It's not critical."

Bethesda have not promised an all out Sony boycott, as that would be rather stupid at this point.

I think Sony will stick to its guns on PS4 because it has the commercial advantage, its much too late in the day for MS to catch up. We may see Sony's stance change for the next generation consoles, and I hope we do. I have sympathy for all sides to be honest. I understand why Sony are taking the path they are and I also understand why consumers want cross-play and why developers want it.

I agree, its indeed inevitable.

Specially now with the rumor Xbox will support mouse/keyboard later down the line. (maybe next gen?)

What you get is a matchmaking filter where you can filter on mouse/keyboard or controller so you won't get matched against m/k players in a FPS game while you play on a controller. But you won't even noticed when you play against a PC player or a Xbox Player.

It seems to me that Sony is the jerk in the room not allowing cross-play for games like Fortnite, Minecraft, and I'm assuming Elite Dangerous. A recent proclamation from Sony's leadership indicates this won't be changing anytime soon. So my question is, why doesn't Frontier consider at least offering cross-play between XBox and PC? I thought I read somewhere Microsoft wants tighter integration between Windows PC and XBox consoles, so this seems a logical step for Frontier to pursue.

I really like my PS4 and its exclusive titles, but Sony's draconian stance on cross-play (especially considering that they already have those exclusive titles) sure does tempt me to defect over to the "other side". However, there wouldn't be much point if you folks can't even cross-play with PCs. Is there any chance of this coming to Elite Dangerous in the near future?

I'm just curious, and a bit agitated by today's tech headlines..

Sony is definitely the jerk in the room but the situation with Elite Dangerous is different. Frontier never developed the game with cross-play in mind thus there are players with overlapping names. Say, someone can have the same name on PC than someone else on PS4 or Xbox One. Merging together the community is therefore impossible, or at least would mean additional challenges. Cross-platform play in other games is not as straightforward either. In Fortnite, you actually need an Epic account to log in on different devices. In Elite you only use your platform-specific account. And in Minecraft you have to log in to your Microsoft (Xbox) Account on your Switch. So it's quite complicated how to create cross-platform play and I'm sure the system of Elite is simply not prepared for that. And I guess as long as every platform uses their unique account systems, stores and everything, it won't be smooth sailing for anyone. That said, Sony really should be more open to the idea.

Let's be real.

There's no reason to NOT do it at this point other than FD has shown us that they can't produce content fast enough as is.

Putting someone on the cross play feature means delaying another feature entirely right now.

If FD told you today "Alright, we're doing Cross Play" you would be lucky to see the feature in the next 12 months. More likely that 8 months into your wait they would say "ooops, sorry all.. you're going to have to wait another 8 months for it and then we might have to charge you for it"

It's a Tuesday but feels like a Monday and YES, that makes me a bit more Salty.

there are actually more reasons not to do offer it than there are to offer it.
It has nothing to do with content releases as they all release simultaneously

There’s also no evidence that such a feature would take a long time as there’s no comparable development for a basis.

Honestly other than certain interest groups for PvP, what actual reasons exist as even PvE is extremely limited in group settings and i standing has caps on how many players can do-exist. Let alone the frequent crashing that occurs today when multiple players enter th same instance, or any lack of meaningful SRV, fighter features and missions

I think the idea interests some but they’ve added stuff that’s neither possible or intended/confirmed to occur for this game. Knowing mega ships/carriers has been cancelled as well as Ice woods for chapter 4 further proves cross play would be a bit pointless.

Sony aside...maybe if people began with meaningful features, it could lead to a realistic idea

I would play against PS4 but not of
Pc have macros (things like auto VSB and more) and more importantly script aka hacks

We also have Voice Attack, fancy 58 button HOTAS setups, mouse and keyboard control, Logitech G13 game controllers, 75FPS 4K resolutions, triple monitors.....

One thing I've never seen in E-D since I started playing it over 3 years ago...kiddie script hackers.

Look to AAA FPS games if you want to find that..and it still gets on my right royal left buttcheek every time an Xbox player accuses PC players in general of cheating...just because [rolleyes]

I've already said, cross-play isn't about combat. That's just one element of Elite. And besides, beating a PC player with all of their bells and whistles would be doubly sweet

Indeed, Bongo. Like most of my mates who were all Xbox players, we play anything with a single player or co-op option rather than the adversarial focus of many popular AAA Xbox and PC games (and gamers)...I must admit that the amount of players who play PvE co-op on a good portion of the games I play on PC is refreshing.

Saying that...I love taking a few of the PC master race mouse & keyboard junkies to the cleaners in the Division, Titanfall 2 or Battlefield One using my Xbox controller...It's not the tools that make a good player [squeeeee]

Look I will love cross play but we all now that this will never happen not at least 5 to 10 years time if we are lucky, depending on the greed with all the company's involved Sony, MS and FD and thats the truth Greed....

One thing theo would love Cross play on CQC

IMHO, Crossplay isn't about who is better, or who has the better controllers, ... it's about the number of player with whom you can interact! I myself am virtually housebound, and use online games to make friends. Elite Dangerous is SUFFERING right now off the back of several PR disasters, and is haemorrhaging players at an alarming rate. Crossplay would help soften the isolation felt by those who rarely see another player in Open Play!

That and who you can interact with. There are still a good number of random CMDRs on PS4 at the major hot spots (I was surprised by how many were on Gnosis before the 'incident'). However, most are strangers, whereas there are a few forum regulars I've gotten to know who play on XBox and PC that I would enjoy winging up with from time-to-time.

But I will admit that when tempted by the XBox One X, one of the cons in my "pro vs con" list is that it seems (and forgive me if I'm wrong) that the XBox community is quite a bit smaller than the PS4 community. I'm not basing this on the forums, because the PS4 Forum is basically dead, but rather on comments I've read in your forum about player numbers vs. what I see in-game on my PS4. Cross-play would fix this.

I think the Xbox community is actually bigger than the PS4 community but its all guess work, DW2 has more Xbox signups so its a "as good" an indication as anything. It would be great if we could all play together ultimately as the galaxy would appear more alive.

I don't know about the relative sizes of the two communities but I have accounts in both and so far the XBox community has certainly been more friendly in Mobius than PS4.

During the first decal CG I was stunned to get a wing invite pretty much every time I dropped into a CZ on XBox. At the same time I also did it on PS4 and no other players were interested, even if I initiated.

I got the "formed a full wing" achievement shortly after starting my XBox account. I still don't have it on my PS4 account which is considerably older.

Funny you say this.

The general word around is that Xbox is more focused on social play while Sony is more focused on single player story driven games.

(Now if you agree or not its a second. I play on Xbox, but in my case this doesn't apply since i'm pretty much only play single player games. And if i play Battlefield I am in a random squad, doing random squad things, but mostly without mic.)

Its not the first time i hear what you are saying. Maybe the random chatter around those 2 platforms are kinda going in the right direction.

Hmmm.. I find your arguments, persuasive...

How do your shadows look on XBox One X? ;)

Although there are around 3 times more PS4 consoles sold worldwide than Xbox One, I think there's a chance Elite has a larger player base here. This is due to the fact that the game was released two years earlier on Xbox, so there has been much more time to get more people on board. Also (and this is quite theoretical) Elite is largely a PC-style game and Xbox has traditionally been closer to PC mentality than PlayStation. Lastly PS4 owners have many more games to choose from so even though there are more players, they may be spread thin between more games. That said, only Frontier could say exactly the state of the installed base on either platform.
