CV1 Black levels finally fixed for me! Weird solution.

Pretty sure you need to plug a monitor into the HDMI port, set up the Full Colour Range options (and calibrate the display etc)
Then unplug the monitor and plug in the Rift/Vive. The Rift should then adopt the new settings (settings appear port-specific, not monitor-specific).

However, I got good results from simply running the display calibration/gamma settings again. My gamma was a bit too high so those near-blacks were too visible; it was much reduced once I'd re-calibrated.

so just to get this clear, this is only a fix for those who have HDMI TV or Monitor, and not a DVI only monitor?

My colour has been washed out since sdk 1.0, any fix for using a DVI connection?

Tbh it doesn't get even close to pure black. Comparing to my GearVR side by side the difference is just huge. Also the colors in general are way more vibrant in GearVR

Temporarily switching the ports around and then setting to full colour etc did not change anything for me on the DK2. Hav'nt tried calibration though. Where is this calibration feature, and do we calibrate using the monitor or the rift attached to the hdmi port?

Same here, just tried it and I'm also using dk2, no difference still washed out colour

Thinking about it, this only happened since change to direct mode from extended.

Perhaps connecting rift hdmi to DVI port via adapter would have same effect as people who are using a 2k 4K DP adapter, only cheaper?

I got cables and adapters coming out my     at the moment!

Putting my DK2 thru hdmi or DVI port made no difference to me!

not everyone had it yet, but oculus are apparently rolling out a background patch within 1.8 runtime which fixes many peoples colour issues.

many are claiming its made a big difference. I have had no problems so hope it does not introduce any for me.

i'm still running 1.3 runtime, is it safe for DK2 users to upgrade to 1.8?

I only recently picked up Elite with my DK2 after more than a year. Had to update to 1.3 and also face the color issues with my GTX970
What's odd though is that the washed out colours appear after some gametime - not from start. This varies from after 10 minutes into the game to 30-40 minutes. then it "switches" to washed out colorband before that everything looks perfect. Restart of Elite keeps the washed out colours, only a reboot sets it back.
i tried several things like HDMI-DVI adapter, editing colourrange in nvidia cp etc.
oculus app says there are new drivers (doesnt update autom.) but i didn't dare to try that yet.

Oh sorry dunno about dk2 I was talking about colour issues with cv1. Mine gets forcibly updated and I can't refuse it

Yeah, I tried to jump into ED last night and it wouldn't start the Rift.

There was no message it was downloading a new runtime, just something about not being able to sync hardware (can't remember, was too busy mashing the reset button)

Now on 1.8-something runtime. No obvious difference.

@rince_wind

The Rift washes the colours out when you lose tracking - are you sure the USB is not turning itself off (power saving)?

If the colours look good when you start ED, try covering up all the tracking LEDs - the colours should go washed out but it will still track (using the internal gyro etc). If that's the same 'washed out' as you get after playing for a while, sounds like the USB port is going into power saving mode.

Thanks, yes it's the same 'washed-out' as when tracking is lost. I will definately try disabling powersave on the USB-ports when i get home (although it used to work on these ports with earlier oculus runtime/ED Version). But this seems a good explanation. [smile]

The washed out effect I get is not like when hmd loses contact, it's more subtle than that, it's just like all the vibrance is gone, I also get the red trails around planets etc.

The 1.8 patch was released with a fix for banding and black blacks, but oddly only a select number of downloads were released with this fix. The fix will be rolled out as a patch for everybody with 1.8 soon according to Oculus.

The driver update you mention is safe to download. I put it off for months but created a system restore last night before updating. It worked fine on DK2 with no issues

I am going to wait to get 1.8 with the fix. Do DK2 users have to download the sdk manually?

Oh my, don't know what to do. Two days ago I normally started ED but right from the start I noticed that colors were bad, crazy banding on the edges of the Elite:Dangerous logo. Went to the game and space was unbearable. Badly crushed dark colors. I remember that game looked like this after 1.3 release, but at some point they fixed it. Now it's back again. I'm using dk2 and I have tested everything, Different adapters, tested all the ports I have, hdmi, dvi, displayport. Tested changing hdmi to full dynamic range with another monitor, tested RGBFullRangeToggle-app, tested reinstalling nvidia drivers AND Oculus software... Tested reverting back to 372.70. I think that Oculus software automatically updated to 1.8 and that is causing the problems. OR Updating 3nvidia drivers to 372.90 the day before.

I would really appreciate any help and tips and if there are others who are experiencing this issue again.

If nothing else - try unplugging the sync cable from the tracker and the multiconnector, let the software detect there's a tracking cable error - and plug it back in. Maybe try replacing that cable.

If it's come unplugged - you'll still have head tracking (which might confuse some people), but horrible colour levels.

This sounds like an issue with the AMD drivers as well.

I have both vive and cv1 and the cv1 just looks dim(which is expected given the relative output of the screens) and grey (which is the bug here).

With the supersampling hack for Vive it's just not a good trade to use the cv1 at all (I also find oculus home/setup to be a hateful piece of software compared to steamvr) :p

Thanks for the thread, this was bothering me and I'll poke at the amd drivers and cabling to see what's possible.
