But: is it really anywhere close to its hype train?
I can only speak for myself obviously. I wasn't particularly "hyped" (meaning I wasn't losing my mind over it), but merely very optimistic, as I'm someone that profoundly enjoyed the Witcher series (mostly 2 and 3).
After 3 days playing, I can say that the game is somewhat different from what I was expecting it to be, but once I was able to start seeing it for what it is, instead of my imagined version of it, I started to enjoy it more and more. And now that I'm confortable enough with it's mechanics and systems and can play it in a more relaxed way, I started to notice the fine details, the little things, the stuff that makes CDPR's worlds "special".
There are flaws, like in other CDPR games the combat is meh (which is even more noticeable now in first person view), the loot system is completely daft.
But the world is great, the characters are awesome, the quests are fantastic, driving / riding around NC feels great. If we take things slowly and start noticing all the little things everywhere, like the ludicrous news article playing on TV behind that food stall you almost didn't notice, or that poster next to that random building entry, how the quest locations, the rooms, etc have been carefully crafted to reflect the quest (and world) themes, the world feels even richer and we can see clearly that CP2077's game world is truly another work of art by CDPR, just like the game worlds of the Witcher..
It's not the Holy Grail of gaming, but it's most definitively a keeper that will entertain me for a long time, and join the likes of Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Witcher and others in my cherished list of favorite action rpg games, even if not the best among them.
