David Braben on free & paid-for content after Beyond (from PC Gamer interview)

I hope you're right, I hope it finaly happens! I am dreaming of flying over green woods, grass, blue water and through white clouds, dive into the blue sky! It'll be breathtaking!!!!

I would love atmo landings to be the next big expansion, doesn't have to be earth-likes with cities etc, but to be able to skim over desert alien worlds, watch the sun rise and fall across an alien plain, the sky to be bright (as opposed to the continual darkness we have now) - to have 'rain' skeet across the canopy as you fall through the atmosphere, as you struggle to maintain a vector as the ship is buffeted by cross winds.

Can we have that please David?

Oh... and some NPC crew actually sitting in those empty seats please.

:)

Not speculating or itching getting my wallet out yet.
Until I see something exciting, in game and working. I'm still gonna say "Meh" to this DB speech.

If it's like Horizons, the first iteration will be very simple and there will be .1 .2 .3 etc adding more complexity. The first few weeks of 2.0 all you could do was land, drive around and collect mats. Engineers didn't exist yet, and I'm not sure synthesis did.

I'm hoping they announce the next title they are working on, Sea World Adventure Park, in which you build your dream marine animal captivity money maker and provide submarine tours.

Fed that orca nothing but pollock for a month strait? Your customers just witnessed him display his dissatisfaction by eating his trainer Wendy alive.

Skimp on a water purification system? Your penguins all came down with botulism and projectile vomited bloody phlegm all the school class on a field trip.

Fun stuff like that.

They'll probably still iterate, but in theory Seasons aren't the thing any more for paid DLC.

Firstly on the season plan; I don't think people liked having to pay for multiple updates in one go, so that is something we are going to move away from. At this end of the 'season' it makes sense, as people can see the huge number of features we are delivering, but it makes for a higher price.

Reiterated in the last report too, IE:

We have announced that the ‘season pass’ business model will be superseded by an alternative after the release of 2.4 The Return.

This discussion is starting to remind me about the bit in "Monty Python's life of Brian" where they start arguing about whether to follow the gourd or the sandle

Bill

"Its a shoe its a shoe!"

yep, I do recall, and no, synthesis didn't exist in the early Horizons launch, but I loved it (still do) and if Atmo goes through an iterative cycle then so be it. I'd hope they wouldn't release anything too bare bones as a paid expansion, but I guess that's subjective.

To be fair, I and most of us here have been in this for the long haul, so as long as it's not just more ships, pewpew add-on's and skins from the store i'll be here. ED in VR is what i dreamed of as a 13yr old way back when I had hair on my head, and for me the next step has to be atmo landings, with lots of variation in planet types/atmospheres.

I can't see space legs being the next thing, it's just a massive undertaking, even just getting all the ship textures reworked for that seems like such a mind boggly task to me!

:)

So.

We know nothing more than we did yesterday.

Awesome article.

Just some bits and pieces, but these things hadn't been precisely confirmed:

* Free content will continue
* Paid content will continue (this didn't need confirming, but some guys are convinced that an odd quote here meant FDev had abandoned the LEP)

And then just reiteration that ED is doing well and folding more resources into dev. Which I don't mind hearing twice ;)

We know there will be something beyond beyond. That alone is newsworthy. Whether it is enough is up to the individual.

Is there an online link to the article yet?
Was that ever really in doubt?

I mean that in all sincerity and far flung predictions about the ames growth vs potential aside: Do people really think nothing is going on with the game?

Aside from death predictions one of the 2 had to happen.

Threads are full of claims that ED is on life support, that player count is decreasing, that FD uses ED devs for other games...

So it seems that lot of people have doubts. Most likely what David says won't convince them, because, hey, we live in world where belief is more important than facts, but it is still nice to see confirmation.

Just few days ago people endlessly argued over other interview about misquote and wondered will be there paid for DLCs.

There are some guys who are pretty convinced that variously: meaningful dev has stopped, that the 100+ staffing is a complete lie, that no paid DLC is coming, that the vast majority of FDev's endeavour is placed in their other franchises etc etc. Even though there's reasonable evidence to the contrary on all of it. Never hurts to have more public declarations though ;)

Yeah but the new delivery model is still such a mystery even snippets like this (that it's both) are kinda interesting. If I didn't have an LEP I'd think cool ok, at least I can still enjoy some content even if the DLC doesn't appeal etc. (To me the freebie content continuing also reaffirms the idea that the game has a solid financial base at the mo, and so is liable to stick around for a bit ;))

We have seen no facts whatsoever.

Braben's word is not fact. I'm not strictly saying it's false, but it isn't fact that because he says some carefully worded sentences, that everything is a-ok. He is never going to come out and say 'while things are not bad, there are definitely far fewer players than we hoped', or 'We're going to be considering closing ED's servers in a few months if things don't pick up'. The words from any CEO, are never the whole truth. This is just business.

The sad fact is, unless someone leaks such information, we'll never know just how many players are active. All we can do is scour the interwebs, and garner a general consensus of how things are. An individual opinion means nothing - but a large group does, and gives a fairly good indication of how things are - regardless of how the smaller minority might wish otherwise.

You know what David is?

CEO of publicly traded company.

You know how you can get serious jail time and/or money penalty?

Lying about state of your product lines and company.

Also why he would even lie? Give some good, solid reason why he would spin positive lies instead of telling nothing? What companies get accused of that they don't tell anything when things are bad, and only good stuff gets praised.

Of course those are just claims. Facts will come out at the end of August when verified shareholder report will be released.

Sad fact is this information doesn't suit your narrative. You try to avoid this little nuance by claiming such information is not trustworthy. Colour me surprised.
