David Braben talking about FDev generally, and Elite Dangerous specifically (timestamp 6m05s)

They added the 'Big Game Hunting' into Odyssey...

The guns fire micro3Dprinters - when the projectile arrives at the target it instantly prints a choice of 'Big Game' , so instead of a gank headshot, we have a gank "eaten by an upset Tiger" shot...

Though, to be fair, Braben does have his own website and forums where he could at any time keep players up to date about how he feels about the state of the game or the future of the game and respond to the most frequent player concerns. But he has not.

So i think the original statement, that he doesn't care is apt. Nobody who cares would let the narrative that they held so important die like it has.

Really he's not who matters anymore. The project manager is the person who needs to care about what they're managing. Who's that and why haven't they played the game they manage?

There's an interesting article about dev disengagement here :

If you design or otherwise create something then you expect to get criticised , often brutally - the thin skinned need not apply. This is partly why most creative courses have "crits", to get you used to it.
(I'm currently watching one of my designs getting ripped to shreds on the local authority website by supposedly upstanding members of the community, and awaiting the personal threats, ill informed local newspaper articles and weird phone calls / emails etc. that often follow.)

Maybe you should read the whole thing to understand where you fit into being part of the problem.

The thing is that criticism should NOT be aimed at the developers. It should be aimed at people MANAGING them. They earn the big bucks, and they make all the big decisions.

when people say developer, they mean fdev, not the individual people tasked with writing some code that they have no control over the when, what, where of what they work on.

When people say Braben doesn't care, they're not saying the game is dead ...it obviously can live on like this undead thing for as long as the servers are up and people will be around to play it because there will always be people around to play something they dont have to pay for (at least pay anymore)

This is more of a thread about disillusionment than it is about the game being dead. It's definitely frustrating to many who experienced the potential back when it was a project of desire and passion that rather visibly and somewhat quickly was stripped of all of that and became just another cog and jira ticket. And odd to see how it became that way directly with the person responsible for starting it.... usually something like this ...and like that doesn't happen until the creator leaves the company ...but he's still there, in control. People change though.. I think this thread is mostly about disappointment in how that person has changed.

i dont know why apple was ever even a consideration... if their graphics api isn't old and outdated specs then it's an api nobody supports.

Almost as much of a waste of effort as their decision to just not build os-agnostic to begin with ...or their decision to create CQC instead of improve the game's npc ai scripting to be more challenging so players didn't miss the uncertainty of pvp given the networking structure the game decided to use making such gameplay nothing more than a novelty.

Macs are a somewhat extreme case. They would have had to implement an entirely new API on Apple's terms since Apple just up and decided to pull support for opengl in favour of Metal.

Yeah, apple basically killed mac gaming by making things much more difficult while windows was being made much easier and more convenient to run on mac. So mac gamers become windows gamers even on mac.

End result very few mac only gamers so nobody wastes any effort on it at all.
