DB interview in Variety.com from E3

It makes no sense for him to intentionally lie about something like that. It is widely known by anyone who plays Elite that Horizons is a paid expansion and it would make zero sense to try to pretend that players haven't paid for an expansion that FD was very obviously selling and continues to sell.

The only explanation that makes any sense is that Braben has been so disconnected from Elite development that he doesn't even remember what they were doing at the time Horizons was released. It's quite likely that he didn't really care where their revenue actually came from at the time because he was probably too busy trying to figure out how to move on to the next project, i.e., Planet Coaster, as quickly as possible so that he could make the company more profitable to investors. This wouldn't surprise me in the slightest given that basically every single video he's done about Elite has basically zero relation to the actual gameplay they've developed and nothing he talks about actually relates directly to the current state of the game. It's entirely plausible to me that shortly after the kickstarter he told the development team "hey I have some cool ideas" and they were only able to implement a fraction of those due to some combination of lack resources, disorganization or mismanagement and literally walked away from it after that point.

The idea that he would intentionally lie about having actually sold a product rather than providing it for free, however, is quite simply too ludicrous to even consider here.

No its not too ludicrous to consider. He's talking to Variety magazine and doesn't care at all about this forum. He's bragging about his company to mainstream media and he knows no one cares enough to go back and fact check and write another story about how some random video game publisher fibbed and didn't fully describe the cost of landing on airless moons in a four+ year old game.

I for one would like to see some value added to the lifetime expansion pass I got during the KS campaign. Up to now (4 years later) it equates to just the Horizons expansion.
That's some of the worst value for money I've ever seen tbh.

I got the LEP during kickstarter.. cost me £35, I'd say I got value for money with just Horizons

I believe they differentiate between expansions (major updates) and Seasons (Horizons, Beyond). So technically he is correct when he says that expansions have been free.

Free expansions so far:
- Community Goals
- Wings
- Powerplay
- CQC
- Ships
- Passengers
- SLF
- Avatars
- Multicrew
- Aliens
- Trading tools

Some people will say whatever to portray FDev in a bad light. They will jump on anything they can. They will not question thier own logic.

For instance it makes not logical sense for DB to lie, so to me if it makes no logical sense then it is likely wrong. So something has gone wrong with the transcript (the interview would have been copied from a recording), some of it could be missing etc. There could be a whole host of reasons for what we are reading, but people will jump on the most negative they can find no matter how little it makes sense.

Two more here.

At this moment, I feel myself cheated by Fd

-Wings and CGs were delayed 1.0 mmo basic features
-Ships are not expansions. Do not be fooled by the terminology
-Passengers being free, were a part of an expansion paid by Horizons owners. You have also a limited access and use possibiities, without Horizons.
-SLF same as Passengers.
-Avatars same as Passengers.
-Multicrew same as Passengers
-Aliens same as passangers. Biggest Part of the Metaplot, features and weapons and equipments, are only for Horizons season pass, owners.

While other people will jump on the most positive they can find, no matter how they are twisting what has been strictly said, in the interview

In any case, I prefer to wait for October Expo. Anything positive or negative, is possible.

Just to be antagnositic ;) technically passengers (2.2), SLF (2.2), Avatars (2.3), Multicrew (2.3) & Aliens (2.4) were part of Horizons. I don't know if non-Horizons got them for free, but they weren't.

Also the ships were always coming from the beginning so I'm not sure they'd count either.

Wings and community goals are basic features necessary to justify their mmo tag in the shop, and the second half (SLF, avatars, multicrew, aliens, passengers and what you refer generally as "ships") are unquestionably paid content for a paid expansion.

The fact that you have to pay upfront for a feature that they promise will be released in 6 months doesn't make that feature free you know ;)

As to what was strictly said in the interview I or you do not know as neither of us were there.

All I have said is that it makes no logical sense to lie. I am not portraying anything as positive or negative, just using common sense. There seems to be a lot of that lacking these days.

As to people twisting things into a positive, that maybe the case. but it's gotta be very rare. Not seen it myself.

Nope, they are free expansions for the base game.

PS
Thinking about it, I believe multicrew and SLF are limited to Horizons. The rest are expansions to the base game.

Interviews use to be recorded for both practical and legal reasons. It's usual that interviews were cutted for reasons, but not that someone fakes the interview. Apart from some kind of fictional press XD So I prefer to take strictly what was said, at least until (if) the media rectifies.

I don't think DB lies. I think, my hypothesis is, he tries to sell to that media readers, in a deeply unfortunate way, not really what has been, but what will be. Anyway, I prefer to wait to Octuber Frontier Expo. I prefer to think in a mistake.

I'm sure it is an actual interview. I never said it was fake. What I am saying is that it has likely been edited. In my experience in magazine design, interviews were edited routinely to fit and the online version would be the same as the magazine version. Hence the reason why I think it has been poorly edited as it doesn't make sense.

I don't think he is trying do a hard sell and it's obvious the interviewer doesn't know that much about ED either. Just saying what makes sense with my knowledge of interviews and magazine design and what happens.

I'm not saying I am right either, it's just the most logical conclusion from what I have read.

So what is logical to think is to miss some phrases, so I said before. That were edited out, not that the phrases that are in the interview, were fake, so they are almost surely correct. In my experience, and in my opinion.

"Our expansions have been free, and the things you pay for are just vanity items, which in a multiplayer game just makes sense." This phrase is so direct, assertive, overwhelming, simple...unless the media rectifies, It should be taken as truly said.
