My guess is P2P is the problem. If you have 500 people in same chat, you either need master server that will handle 1->500 connections and that might cause problems for some internet providers if you just create so many connections and maintain them. Some ISP limits how many ports you can have active at the same time. So in theory you can have 65535 members but you won't be able to do anything else just relay chat messages from ED.
Is there a way to create chat server for so many people without maintaining active connections? I guess it would delay things. Maybe open and close connections and sync like 1000 people at one time?
That is my speculation why they put 500 player limit. Might be something else, wish devs said why is the limit 500, instead of us guessing.
