Ok thanks for that m8! 🤓 Seriously tho, not what I expect from Edo, Katie Byrne played SC and went to a real snowy atmospheric world at the start.

  • We understand this is an important topic within the community. As mentioned at the start of the article, we want to share the challenges as well as the positives. Investigations are still ongoing, however, it must be said that this is proving to be a very significant technical challenge. At the current time we do not have a workable solution. BUT, investigations will continue and we will keep you updated.
I'm sorry, but maybe I didn't translate it correctly. I think there are quite a few mathematicians and people of age on this forum and I think they are even familiar with Turing and Fractals. If you described the problem in more detail I think together we could find a solution faster.

After all, the community should not only scold but also help.
 
Nope, I don't buy it. Planets do not move in SC + 1 system only.
I completely agree about the less science based nature of the universe and the tiny 1 system universe ....but you know it really has not been bothering me that much when playing since in that single SC system there are quite a few things to do and places to visit and ... I can walk inside my ship . EDO has SC totally beaten for scale - but even in EDO I tend to stay in a single system so .... a more stable SC with more features in it .... means I'll be playing more SC than EDO .

Guess that the difference. I got bored to death doing suit upgrades in 1-2 systems for 2 weeks in EDO (and prior that couple months being in bubble). Now I ran out finally, just hope they will add something for carriers, like Vista or /and concourse soon.
 
I appreciate the content in the Monthly Update - particularly the areas mentioning that the dev team are facing challenges with certain things. You know, when I hear this sort of honesty, my instant reaction is "How can I help?" This is to say, from a player's perspective, is there anything I can do to provide useful feedback that would assist? I know there's not much I can do but having you say there are challenges gets me more on your side and the pitchfork gets put back in the shed.

At the same time, it does temper my expectations. I feel somewhat let down by the lack of ambition or aspiration in EDO but it may very well be that the size of the development team just isn't big enough to support hitting those same goals that you did those years ago with the initial development of the game where you created an amazing 1:1 simulation of the galaxy with 400 billion stars. It makes me sad to think you can't hit those heights again with say something like ship interiors but maybe you don't have the team and resources to do it? In which case I need to re-asses what kind of entertainment I can get from EDO.

The other incredibly non realistic thing about this image is the lack of snow and ice on the buildings themselves. Clearly the buildings were just dumped on the planet with no thought as to realism regarding the environment. Something Elite has prided itself on in the past but clearly not any longer. Just looks very cheap and nasty
 
Nope, I don't buy it. Planets do not move in SC + 1 system only.
You could always try it for yourself during the next free fly event instead of relying solely on word of mouth. I typically check it out once a year to see how it’s progressing. You have nothing to lose except a little hard drive space for a day or two (as long as it’s solid state: SC doesn’t do well with traditional hard drives). ;)

This most recent free fly event, I was incredibly surprised to find I had far better framerates on uninhabited planets in SC than I currently get on any empty worlds in Odyssey. Framerates are still pretty bad in cities, particularly Area 18 of ArcCorp, but they’re only slightly lower than what I get at any Odyssey settlements. The fact that Area 18 is exponentially more massive and detailed than any Odyssey settlement, yet nearly achieves the same framerate, really highlights just how poorly optomized Odyssey is at the moment.

I really hope things improve significantly with tonight’s Odyssey patch, and that there’s more patches on the way before the console release.

Soo ...if that snow is 20000 years old (I think more like millions) question is, where from snowfall will come if all possible "water" is already on ground.
We had that on Earth. Ice age was extra sunny and shiny - paradise for grass all sort.

As bad as the grind and game play design is, the performance and graphics tech needs to be ironed out. From what this Dev Post is saying, it is going to take a significant amount of time and resources to get it all working right. Hopefully as we approach end of the year more and more future content will be mentioned.

Fdev, you might want to think about adding features that don't involve those systems. Like player crafting, expanding powerplay, player markets, and expanding exploration (things to scan and turn in). Some of which you might be able to charge a few bucks here and there. Just a thought...

We would like to share with you our first monthly development update since the launch of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The purpose of these monthly news articles is to give a regular, moment in time, updates on how development within Elite Dangerous is progressing. The aim is to a provide a factual look at community requested features, issues, and a look forward at what the team are working on next.

Please note: the nature of these updates will be ‘warts-and-all’; you will likely see work in progress screenshots and content taken from WIP builds. That means that all information and assets shared are subject to change.

We will be looking to share more information on development challenges as well as talking about progress that has been made in other areas. Making games requires a large number of people working closely and in sync. There will always be a need to prioritise and focus development efforts on specific features and content for the biggest benefit of our wider community. Despite an incredible team, we simply wouldn’t ever have enough time to add all the awesome things that are requested by the community. As such, we hope that by being open about these requests, we can avoid giving the wrong expectations and everyone can be informed and up to date with where development is at that time.

So let’s get started…

June Update

Since this launch we have had to adjust our focus and the development team have been working incredibly hard to review and address as many reports and issues as possible. We have done this through a number of early hotfixes and a subsequent series of five game updates, including the one that will be deployed tomorrow.

Throughout these five updates we have made over a thousand changes, fixes, and additions to Odyssey based on your feedback, including in key areas such as:
  • Lighting, brightness and gamma
  • Character and Outfitting UI
  • Galaxy Map navigation and found organic data tracking
  • Performance – We know there is more to do here, but we are pleased to see some players reporting notable improvements for particular configurations
So, what is next for Odyssey?

As previously stated, Update Five will be deployed tomorrow and will deliver on more key areas of focus and feedback that we have received. These include:
  • Shared missions – allowing you to work together with other Commanders on the ground and share mission rewards

Issue Tracker
Another area we like to keep an eye on is our Issue Tracker. This allows us to see and measure the key issues within the community, as voted for by you. We know that many of you are keen to have an update on the top issues. So we’ve listed out the top five items below and given some direct thoughts and feedback on each one of them.

Current Top Five:
  1. Improvements to lighting (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/33174)
    • Many of the lighting issues have been improved across previous updates, the last major set relate to the update of ship cockpits which will be in Update 5. We will continue to monitor your feedback.
  2. Degraded terrain textures compared to Horizons (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/32854)
    • Pathways have been identified to improve this and a team is actively working on this area.
  3. Planetary features that appear to repeat (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/34834)
    • We understand this is an important topic within the community. As mentioned at the start of the article, we want to share the challenges as well as the positives.   4. Anarchy factions and the BGS (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/35479)
    • After extensive investigation we found that missions against anarchy factions were too impactful and this has been addressed. We are making further tweaks with Update 5 and will continue to monitor this issue closely to see if further action is required.
  5. FPS performance in Odyssey
    • Pathways have also been identified with performance and the team are actively working on this area.
Future Progress: The Longer Roadmap

As mentioned in our previous post, our aim was to focus on the initial set of updates and then turn our attention back onto console. There’s no doubt that the additional development work on these updates and community requests pose a challenge on our previous plans and timelines. We are actively investigating, reviewing, and remeasuring the further roadmap but these things will take a little time. We understand that this may not be as much information as people may have wished for, but we hope that the open and transparent nature of this update means that you’ll bear with us while we pull those together. What we can say, is that through these monthly updates, we will be able to share and keep you informed every step of the way.

NIce Info drop and thanks for the realness! Couldn´t read everything carefully but will do. One thing is getting my attention, the new lighting in the ship. Could we have a Cockpit light dimmer, because also in my car I can dim the lights so I will not get disturbed from to much light in the cockpit, I think it would be a nice thing.

Since Odyssey dropped, I tought the dark Cockpit is working as intended because the rear chairs are full of light but the driver needs to focus on his driving so dark mode cockpit ;)

I will point out that an ice world without an atmosphere wouldn’t have any clouds or weather, thus there wouldn’t be any snow. ;)

Ye...i see all sort of bad science on vids already. She uses almost same suit in SC as EDO has. However, that suit cannot handle vacuum and/or big pressure. And SC still do that - EVA >: in this thin suit. Furthermore, moves in EVA looks ...wrong :) After playing KSP..that is just wrong in SC.
