Development Update 1 - June

@FutronBob

And without an atmosphere, how did the ice form in the first place then, using your logic? A liquid water world or world with moisture needs an atmosphere, without it water can't exist, therefore snow and ice can't exist

A liquid water world with no atmosphere is literally impossible. At 0C, the coldest temperature at which liquid water can exist, its vapor pressure is 4.6 torr, meaning its surface is trying to boil at a pressure of 4.6 torr. Our atmosphere is 760

Wind? There would still be a build up on the buildings. Stop white knighting.
To have wind you need temp difference. And if you have it "snow" will be "water" sometime later.
I think we're allowed to land only dead-dead planets now. Like Mars, with nothing liquid.

....btw, just counted quantitum drive from vids. She did 50000kms (0.16ls) in 20s. So imagine how many hours that drive will fly 20000ls. Next time remember it when "10 mins in cruise is too slow" :D

...for me SC's vids look like "everything in space works like on Earth" :D
...only KSP & Elite do space things +/- proper as for me now.

I was personally hoping for a balance pass or 3 on engineering requirements and the process;
Again we should have a button that says “interior lights” but apparantly thats too difficult to implement.
that would mean we’d need to change the bulb 😛

This is all at 1440p I assume?

I'm asking because I'm getting 60fps on surfaces and 57fps standing at the top of the stairs in a station concourse on a non-overclocked 2060, on a system with 16GB of RAM and an eight year old i7 3770 at 1080p.
Nope, I get the same FPS at 1080, I get the same FPS if I lower the graphics to potato level, I get the same FPS, regardless of how many times I delete and recreate my graphics file. This is with blur and bloom off (it's literally unplayable with them turned on, not to mention ugly), this is with SS and AA off or on, it really doesn't matter what I do, it's just abysmal. Horizons, in Ultra @ 1440, with AA on and SS to 1.0x runs at well over 60 FPS at all times.

Thanks for the post Arthur.

I don’t know much about procedural generation, but I have an idea I’d like to think is possible, is it possible to use a test sample of every planet type, spawn them on a test server and set the topography and terrain textures and keep setting them in until you get the desired effect. Then use that as the math for the stellar forge procedural generation.

I’m not the first player to liken the current planet terrain textures to Minecraft. To do it over the entire galaxy and to live with the results we have must have been disappointing Andi a headache for the devs,

im not going to be totally negative, I’m actually really enjoying Odessey, For me It’s not about rushing around, killing everything and stealing everything. It’s more about stealth and strategy. Busting in to a high security base to loot the lockers can bedecent gameplay and satisfying when you succeed. Likewise on foot Assassinations take guile , patience and nerve, and can get very tense . As the weeks of the beta ( pun intended) progresses we are witnessing noticeable improvements , Most of the crash fixes seems to be working,

like many others I lowered my expectations and lowered my graphics settings to achieve a workable and steady 60 FPS in space , 35-45 in bases with other npc’s..

im really looking forward to seeing what the devs can pull out of the bag.

that would mean we’d need to change the bulb 😛
Not if FDev would finally listen to the community that they profess to listen to and allow our crew member(s) to sit in the cockpit with us. A 10% cut in profits for making sure the lights are working and the coffee machine is on seems more reasonable than what we have now.

I can only assume that FDev think we'd get bored looking into our cockpit and actually seeing a seat or two occupied, in the same way that they apparently think we'd get bored exiting our ship on foot instead of by teleporter. Obviously running to the elevator every time we disembark to find feet missions is much more immersive and engaging

Again I am going to point out that nothing in this post was not new from last week or even really last month. FDev CHOSE to release at the close of business. That is how they historically have operated. It shows that they have no intention of changing and that they have learned nothing.

You can continue to white knight for them all you want but expect to have your called.
Nothing in my post was white knighting. I was just telling how it was from what I knew.

I agree with a lot of what you say regarding the content of this OP and I am gutted there is not going to be native PS5 support. I've made this plain elsewhere on the forum.

Being a moderator isn't about being a white knight.

A moderator like everyone else on the forum can have personal opinions.

We have to follow the same rules of the forum just like everyone else.

Overhauled Cockpit Lighting -
Very glad to see this. Hopefully with any luck, this is will stop the sick headache I get around 20 minutes in game from the current cockpit lighting. crosses fingers

I don't know who has the hardest job at the moment Garth Southgate the England football manager or Arthur Tolmie the Frontier Community Manager. Whatever result these two deliver someone will be critical and when something small goes wrong everyone's up in arms... total uproar... TREASON.

Greetings Commanders,

We would like to share with you our first monthly development update since the launch of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The purpose of these monthly news articles is to give a regular, moment in time, updates on how development within Elite Dangerous is progressing. The aim is to a provide a factual look at community requested features, issues, and a look forward at what the team are working on next.

Please note: the nature of these updates will be ‘warts-and-all’; you will likely see work in progress screenshots and content taken from WIP builds. That means that all information and assets shared are subject to change.

We will be looking to share more information on development challenges as well as talking about progress that has been made in other areas. Making games requires a large number of people working closely and in sync. There will always be a need to prioritise and focus development efforts on specific features and content for the biggest benefit of our wider community. Despite an incredible team, we simply wouldn’t ever have enough time to add all the awesome things that are requested by the community. As such, we hope that by being open about these requests, we can avoid giving the wrong expectations and everyone can be informed and up to date with where development is at that time.

So let’s get started…

June Update

Since this launch we have had to adjust our focus and the development team have been working incredibly hard to review and address as many reports and issues as possible. We have done this through a number of early hotfixes and a subsequent series of five game updates, including the one that will be deployed tomorrow.

Throughout these five updates we have made over a thousand changes, fixes, and additions to Odyssey based on your feedback, including in key areas such as:
  • Lighting, brightness and gamma
  • Character and Outfitting UI
  • Galaxy Map navigation and found organic data tracking
  • Performance – We know there is more to do here, but we are pleased to see some players reporting notable improvements for particular configurations
So, what is next for Odyssey?

As previously stated, Update Five will be deployed tomorrow and will deliver on more key areas of focus and feedback that we have received. These include:
  • Shared missions – allowing you to work together with other Commanders on the ground and share mission rewards

  • Overhauled cockpit lighting

  • Visual improvements for neutron stars
  • Redesign of ship outfitting interface
  • Rebalanced drop rates for rare items
Issue Tracker
Another area we like to keep an eye on is our Issue Tracker. This allows us to see and measure the key issues within the community, as voted for by you. We know that many of you are keen to have an update on the top issues. So we’ve listed out the top five items below and given some direct thoughts and feedback on each one of them.

Current Top Five:
  1. Improvements to lighting (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/33174)
    • Many of the lighting issues have been improved across previous updates, the last major set relate to the update of ship cockpits which will be in Update 5. We will continue to monitor your feedback.
  2. Degraded terrain textures compared to Horizons (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/32854)
    • Pathways have been identified to improve this and a team is actively working on this area.
  3. Planetary features that appear to repeat (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/34834)
    • We understand this is an important topic within the community. As mentioned at the start of the article, we want to share the challenges as well as the positives. Investigations are still ongoing, however, it must be said that this is proving to be a very significant technical challenge. At the current time we do not have a workable solution. BUT, investigations will continue and we will keep you updated.
  4. Anarchy factions and the BGS (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/35479)
    • After extensive investigation we found that missions against anarchy factions were too impactful and this has been addressed. We are making further tweaks with Update 5 and will continue to monitor this issue closely to see if further action is required.
  5. FPS performance in Odyssey
    • Pathways have also been identified with performance and the team are actively working on this area.
Future Progress: The Longer Roadmap

As mentioned in our previous post, our aim was to focus on the initial set of updates and then turn our attention back onto console. There’s no doubt that the additional development work on these updates and community requests pose a challenge on our previous plans and timelines. We are actively investigating, reviewing, and remeasuring the further roadmap but these things will take a little time. We understand that this may not be as much information as people may have wished for, but we hope that the open and transparent nature of this update means that you’ll bear with us while we pull those together. What we can say, is that through these monthly updates, we will be able to share and keep you informed every step of the way.

Livestream

As you may have seen from the weekly schedule, I will be jumping into Elite Dangerous tomorrow and playing through the most recent update with Bruce. Please come along and join us where we can discuss today’s update.

Still getting 20fps on planets. Don’t give up on optimisation just because people with RTX 3080 are running perfectly.

It's memory leak there for sure. 2Gb card slow loads always, 6Gb card drops FPS when new flowers are near. Then...on some rare planets with complete flat surface and long range view goes crazy because it is not enough of all memory I had.

To all those people who think that the creation of 400 billion star systems was a big effort - those are algorithms, These star systems were never created and will just be created, if someone enters a certain system. If they would have to be created beforehand and it would take 1 second to create a star system, it would have taken them 3168.8 YEARS to do that. Those are just algorithms, nothing more - so stop saying this is an amazing work done - these star systems don't exist in this amount - they are just algorithms.

There is simply not enough here to be confident in Elite's future. This is incredibly disheartening.

This was your opportunity to give us something other than noting basic improvements and acknowledging issues that should not have made it into release in the first place (there is no justification that the team did not know Odyssey would be released in a broken state).

You are effectively telling us that Elite has no future plans.

You've stated on SCN that there is more coming down the line. I don't doubt that. I don't doubt, given the pacing, that the Azimuth Saga is planned out well enough to hold up Elite's narrative until console launch. However, this pattern of giving us hope for something better and then significantly underdelivering makes those claims redundant because what we now expect is that whatever is planned down the line will continue to be underwhelming and disappointing and frustrating.

Here's a transcript of what you had to say about this dev post on yesterday's SCN:

"...all the information we are going to give -- and there's quite a bit of it --..."

And yet now you're admitting:

There's no way that you did have quite a bit of information that you were going to give and somehow that draft of this post was severely trimmed down.

Clearly you knew that there was not going to be quite a bit of information that you were going to give. How do you justify this given your communication philosophy of honesty?

Clearly it was an explicit lie that there was quite a bit of information that you were going to give. Clearly that was an untenable claim that was intended to give people false hope.

FDev mismanaged this unique, pivotal opportunity. Mismanagement is the operative word in this whole situation.

Warhammer and F1 must be paying attention and evaluating whether they want to be associated with a faulty business that can't deliver.

Good luck on stream Thursday.

Excellent post, my feelings and thoughts the same, just does not matter anymore, ED will be forever on our hearts has a good game that now came to an end!

Just wanted to add that again they are completely and utterly ignoring the crowd on all requests made , because Frontier simply gave up on this game a long time ago and seems as they admit dont have resources to overhaul this game anymore , the main fact is that they simply dont even think on getting new resources or invest further on this game.

As a reminder some of the top 5 features request among community :

  • Ship Interiors
  • VR full support on foot
  • More meaningfully missions (stop the gridding gameplay)
  • Multiplayer (more than just 4 in an instance at least 50!)
  • More ships , more SRV's, more planet tech (variety and features)

Although as a developer i strongly believe that with the current ED tech and resources allocated to the project, its near impossible to make anything more that they did so far, so most probably only if they started an new ED in a new modern engine from scratch could we ever see this features i such a game.
Unfortunately this only proves that Frontier for a very long time now does not care much for ED and the community and this project is Dying slowly, but eventually will die one day!

Best of luck to all CMDR's out there,
Start evaluating other games and stop wasting time on this one!
